JEAN Hua CHAPTICRof the National Honor Society, was founded in Ames High School in 1927. This organization has as its purpose the developing of leadership, originality, resourcefulness, inventive ability, and a continuity of effort in thc students. Selections for membership are made three times a year. Only juniors and seniors in the upper one-fourth of their classes are eligible, Membership in this society is awarded after a student has shown himself to he worthy in the four classes of service, scholarship, leadership, and character. To he chosen to Nation- al Honor Society is one of the greatest compliments that can be given to any High School student. The Honor Society oath which every new member repeats after the president is: I plcdgc myself to uphold thc high purposes of the society to which I have been elected, striving in every way by word and deed to make its ideals the ideals of my school. Several articles were submitted to the National Honor Society monthly publication Life which told of outstanding achievements of the Ames High student government. With the help of Miss Mackin and Miss Stoaks, the sponsors, the annual Junior Red Vross Drive achieved satisfying results. Monthly meetings and pot-luck dinners brought the members together often. DEBHTE HIC Ames High debate squad, composed of Ronald Ross, Dave Gilman, Bill liichling, Dick Steinberg, Don DeLaHunt, and Spencer Vanderlinden, and under the sponsorship of L. Wayne Smith, enjoyed an eventful season as the team was victorious in twenty-seven out of thirty-three debates. Again the year's program was financed by the fall play, Rip Van Winkle. The Debate Club served as business managers. Debating the international question of Resolved: that the United States should establish an alliance with Great Britain, the team was able to attend five tournaments. Ames was represented at the Newton tournament and placed second by winning thirteen out of sixteen debates. Next the team attended the Fort Dodge tournament, where they were successful in winning five out of six debates. All made this trip with the exception of Dave Gilman. Ames accepted an invitation to the Perry tournament which introduced to the debaters tl1e Oregon plan of debate. The novel feature of this plan is the cross-exalnining of each team which is carried on for seven minutes. In the two day district tournament Ames won the right to attend the state finals by defeating eight schools. The aflirmative team was composed of Bill Eichling and Dave Gilman, while the negative side was argued by Ronald Ross and Spencer Yanderlinden. SPENCER VANDEHLINDEN, '40 'IXKPNTX PINE
