Departure: 5 june 1972. Destination: Gulf Of Tonkin. Return: Unknown. That's What A- MERICAMEN faced when they left Pier 12 in Norfolk. Hundreds of people--wives, Children, well-wishers--gathered on the pier to wave goodbye to the AMERICA, making her second trip to the Pacific in three years. AMERICAMEN and their families didn't find out until the last minute that the ship was headed for the Pacific. Although rumors about a WESTPAC deployment had been circulating through the ship for weeks, it wasn't until the week before AMERICA's departure that A- MERICAMEN knew for sure where they were going. For some, it meant changes in plans. For some, it had little effect. For everyone, it meant a longer time away from home.
