Many great sporting events occurred in 4985. if you can
remember back in The summer when the weather was
warm and The only thing that you had to do was Take your
sister to The pool, The Los Angeles Lakers Took on The
Boston Celllcs and defeated Them in an action-packed
game. lf you remember That, Then jump forward to Sep-
tember. laseball season was winding To a close and The
World serles Tension was mounting. The Kansas City
Royals and The Salnl Louis Cardinals were going to be
The Two Teams vying for The championship, Royalty Tri-
umphed over the Cardinals and won the series. The big-
gest name in Hockey last year was The Edmunlon Ollers.
They triumphed over the Phlladelphla Flyers for the Stan-
ley Cup. Over in soccer, The San Diego Sockers kicked
The Baltimore llasls out of The stadium to win Their presti-
gious cup. One of the Three Grand Slam events in lennls
this year, Wimbledon, was won by German Wunderkind
lorls locker. Women's was won by Marllna Havrafllova.
The U.S. Open championships were won both by Czecho-
slovakians-lvan Lendl and Hana Manllkova. Winners of
The French Open were Chris Evert Lloyd and Mats Wl-
lander. Finally, The most popular sporting event-Super
Sunday. This years superbowl contestants were the New
England Patlols and the Chicago Bears. Despite a rug-
ged battle, The Bears ran all over the Patriots and cap-
tured a desecrating win with a score of 44-10.

The best known medical event was The discovery of Presldenl Rea-
9an's cancer. Colon cancer was removed and also a common form of
skin cancer was removed from his nose. Not for behind was the shock-
ing revelation from movie star and former heartthrob Rock Hudson that
he had A,l.D.S, l-le later died of the dreadful disease, This year the world
saw a record breaking number of fatal plance crashes. The most
destructive was in Manchester, England. On August 22, a British Airways,
Boeing 737 crashed on takeoff killing 54 people. Lebanon terrorists
hijacked TWA flight 8A7 leaving Greece, The Shiites shot and killed one
passenger, a Naval officer and held captive 3A American hostages. A
devestating volcano eruption in Columbia wiped out an entire Town ot
22,000 people. Shocking tornadoes ripped through Beaver County
leaving destruction To many counties, This past February saw the worst
llre in Ambridge's l-listory, The Marwood apartment building burned
down on a frigid evening killing four people. November was the rainiest
month all year. All but three days proved very damp resulting in flood-
lng throughout Allegheny and surrounding counties. Unemployment
rose even higher in the valley when LTV closed down operations ex-
cept for 700 people when at onetime 5000 employees worked there.
Armco corporation also closed down.

August was the A0th anniversary of the United States
Hydrogen bombing of Hlroshlma. Japan surrendered end-
ing WW ll. Peace-loving Samantha Smith was killed along
with five other people in a plane crash. A widespread
search for mlsslng children was launched last year. Pic-
tures and other vital information was placed on milk cartons
hoping vast exposure would help locate millions of missing
children. The SS. Tltanlc, the supposed unsinkable ocean-
liner that sank 73 years ago was located two and one-half
miles below the surface near Newfoundland. There are un-
told millions in wealth buried with the vessel belonging to the
'l5'l3 people who perished and the 700 who survived. This
year, the number 'l soft drink, Coke, made a big mistake. lt
changed its secret formula. Protests rang out across the
country. Coke admitted its error by making available the
New Coke and Classic Coke. Also new this year from Cam-
eron is Cherry Coke. Wrestlemania swept the country.
Studio wrestling was immensely popular in '85. Hulk Hogan
is the World Wrestling Federation champ. Locally, a movie
Gung Ho, directed by Ron Howard was filmed in Beaver.
The movie starred Coraopolis' own Michael Keaton. For the
film, Beaver was reconstructed to a Ath of July celebration
in August and renamed l-ladleyville. Pittsburgh was named
the most livable city in America. The Prince and Princess ot
Wales graced 'Violent America" with a visit. During their
three day tour of the U.S. they touted their own water and
Diana dazzled us with her fashions. Halley's comet raced
through the sky on its first trip in 76 years. As of late, the
Space Shuttle Challenger exploded 76 seconds into flight
killing all members including teacher Christa lllcAulltfe who
was a guest.
ln music news much happened. This year would
have been Elvis Presley, fthe king of Rock-n-
Roll'sj 50th birthday. Bruce Springsteen played
Great Britain and the U.S. on his Born in the U.S.A.
tour along with the E Street Band. They rocked
Three Rivers Stadium which was filled to capaci-
ty- over 64,000 people. Rock queen Madonna
married actor Sean Penn in a secret ceremony.
Madonna made famous her neon jelly bracelets.
Girls and guys sported black, white and any color
imaginable ones on wrists, ankles, and fingers.
Thirty-one bands got together in a heart-warm-
lng attempt to raise money for starving Africans.
Llve-Aid consisted of musicians collaborating
from three continents. For seventeen hours of
nonstop music millions of dollars were made for
African relief. Rick Nelson, 4950's and 4960's rock
hero was killed on New Year's Eve in the last fatal
plane crash of the year. The American Music
Awards gave the most to Huey Lewis and the
News and to Whitney Houstan.
