FOREWORD
lt is with mixed joy and regret that we, the class of 1949, leave Ambler High
School. We are joyful and eager to take our places in society. Some of us are going
on to schoolg others are going immediately into the business world. We are all deeply
conscious of the task before usfto help make peace and harmony reign again in the
confused post-war world of today. We regret leaving our teachers who have done so
much for us, XVe regret leaving the carefree life of high school boys and girls. Now
we are men and women with definite responsibilities. We feel that with the knowledge
and training we have received here at A. H. S. we are able to go out and face our
futures as successful American citizens and make our Alma Mater proud of us all.
EARL T. BAKER
r
DEDlCATl0
ll e, the class of 1949, dedicate this R-Ambler to our friend, our guide, our
comrade, and our leader, the man who has always understood and helped us, and who
has very patiently taught us, not algebra or English, but how to be tine men and
women-our principal, Mr. Earl T. Baker.

CLASS HISTORY
Dear Diary:
In September of 1945 many of us, the class of '49, came to Ambler High School
from Fort Washington, Spring House, Penllyn, Whitpain, and Sheeleigh. To us, the
building was tremendous, its layout confusingg lockers were strange and new: and the
teachers weren't real people. tWill we ever forget our first class with Mr. Meyers?j
Our first year was spent in getting acquainted with our new friends and teachers,
learning how to eat in thirty minutes and how to go without recesses, marveling at
having a different teacher for each subject, and going out for the many activities
fsports, band, dramatics, etc.J that were offered us. By the time April rolled around,
the 9-Z section had pretty well acclimated itself to its new life and gave a barn dance.
The dance was very successful, and it started two of the class romances which have
been going strong for four years.
In the fall of 1946 we began to feel quite worldly. We were Sophomores and
members of Senior High! In March we gave a formal, the Sophomore Frolic. Do
you remember-or should I say, can you forget-the thousands of crepe paper flowers
we made for that dance and the benches we borrowed from Old Mill Manor that were
so well white washed they whitened all the boys' dark suits?
Last year we were very busy financing the Junior-Senior Prom. We gave cake
sales, movies, and a coke dance, which proved to be just as much fun as the prom
itself. We slaved for many hours making paper fish, coral, the old sea chest, and other
decorations to carry out our 'funderwateri' theme. Then, on May 8, we all danced to
the strains of Horace Clyde's orchestra, feeling very smug about being host at one
of the best proms that Ambler has ever had.
This year we've run around like chickens with our heads cut offg ordering com-
mencement announcements and name cards, trying to make the yearbook deadline,
dreaming up acts for Class Night, and, at long last-fgraduating.
Our high school years have been wonderful! We had a football team that was
undefeated for three years, a hockey team and girls' basketball team undefeated this
year. We had a more than generous share of talent, and, scholastically, a very
competitive class.
Even though about 99.9Z of us don't think so now, we'll miss A. H. S., and we'd
just like to wish as much luck and happiness as we've had here to all the classes
yet to come.
Sonya Nylund

VARSITY FO0TBALL
Dear Diary:
Upper Merion tFirst Outingj-Things looked
bad, going into the second half of our first game.
We were behind 12-0 and hadn't been near
enough to the Upper Merion goal line to get a
good smell of it. I guess it was just another
case of Johnny Meyers, locker room oratory
which was the turning point, because we went
on to tie 12-12.
Quakertown tLeague Openerj-We were gun-
ning for our 25th straight win and a good start
in the defense of our league championship when
we took on the Quakers at Ambler. After jump-
ing out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter, we
were never seriously threatened and won handily
26-7.
Upper Moreland KA Close Shave! J-Who will
ever forget Comfort's pass to Willox from the
one-yard line in the last quarter of this nip and
tuck battle? We didn't want to see another
as close as this one, but we had two of them
coming up. Credit must be given our line for
its great defensive work.
Sell-Perle tiYe Really Let Loose! J--It was the
first time in our high school days that we had
seen our team reach the point-a-minute class.
Altogether, six Ambler players reached pay dirt
in an avalanche of scoring which saw us head
homeward with our most decisive victory of the
year, 61-0. Our varsity played only six minutes
of the game, with the second and third teams
doing fine work in relief.
Dnylestown fGetting Stung by the Hornetsj
-Let's quote the headline of our local paper
for the morbid truth about the game none of us
will ever forget. "Doylestown snaps Ambler's
winning streak at 29 straight league games."
The Trojans last tasted defeat in October, 1945,
when the Lansdale Huskies won a Bux-Mont
encounter 6-0. Over 3,500 football fans from
all parts of the county witnessed the game.
Springfield tNot a VVinning Streak of 31 but a
Losing Streak of IJ-There was no stopping the
Trojan eleven the next time out. They won the
most satisfying victory of the year hands down,
after all the slide rule experts had deemed them
R. Lindsley T. Rhoades
"washed up." Even before the fans had settled
down, Rabbit had taken the opening kick-off on
his own 13 and scooted 87 yards down the
south sideline for one of the sweetest TD's ever
placed in the Ambler scoring column.
Hatboro CPassing the Half-Century Mark for
the Second Timej-It was another field day
for the Blue and Gold as they scored two six-
pointers in each quarter and ran rough-shod over
the Hatters. Beans and Charlie accounted for
31 of our 52-point totaly and, thanks to our
strong forward wall, the foe went scoreless.
Jenkintown tOut Last Game on the Home
Fieldl--Of the first half of this battle we can
tell you nothing, for the simple reason we
couldn't see it. The mist was so heavy that to
this day we can't figure out how Comfort could
see Willox or Rabbit and hit them with his for-
ward passes. Somehow they managed to collect
27 points in the first half and coast on to win.
Lansdale tThe One We had to Winj-All good
things must come to an end! Our Trojans,
champions of the Bux-Mont for the past three
years, finally saw their reign as kingpins go by
the boards as they were turned back 14-6 in a
great clash at Lansdale before 8,500 hysterical
fans. There was never a more thrilling game
in the years of the Bux-Mont Conference. So
much was at stake! It was the last big game of
our season. We were beaten by a better team,
and we went down fighting. Will we ever forget
the pep meeting before this game?
Souderlon QThe Finalej-As compared with
the ordeal we had gone through the previous
R. Serrao N. Willox
week, our last game was drab and colorless. The
Shingletowners were far superior to the Big Red
and romped to a 39-O victory.
Looking Back-We have seen some pretty fair
football players during our stay at A.H.S. Al-
though our l48 squad had no particular star,
our four captains, Willox, Serrao, Rhoades, and
Lindsley will be remembered as men who were
very handy with the pigskin. It was "gang
spirit" that won us our second place birth in the
final standings and pushed a total of 341 points
across pay dirt as compared with the 60 for oth'
opponents. Two of our boys, Bob Serrao, and
Norm Willox, were named on the All-Bux-Mont
eleven.
In closing, we'd like to give our vote of thanks
to the coaching staff headed by the 'fBlond
Bombshell," Johnny Meyers and ably assisted
by Fred Volp and Mervin Henry.

Dear Diary:
August 27-Another season has begun for the
fifteen girls who have started their hockey train-

in the Poconos complained of crowded conditions
and Sally's heating pad. We were proud of the
nine girls from our team who made the two all-

The hundred ten pound team of Ambler High

won two games and lost one. Conshohocken
High defeated us, but we put up a fine struggle
which made the game interesting to watch.
Our successfulness is due to the fine coaching

VARSITY BASKETBALL . . BOYS
Our Varsity Basketball Squad started out with
a bang by winning three of its tirst four games.
As we headed for Hatboro on january seventh,
our Trojans were tied for the league leadership
and seemed to be on their way to bettering last
year's record of twelve up and six down. The
Hatters changed our plans, however, and sent
us home with a 59-42 shellacking and the tirst
of a six-game losing streak. We waited until
january twenty-eighth for our next victory, but
this one proved worth waiting for. We had
opened our season against Springtield and had
received one of the worst dubbings we were to
take all year, 61-31, but we returned from
Springlield with our fourth win, a 47-38 upset.
Quakertown was next on the list of our triumphs
and was the only school we defeated twice. The
final victory for the Blue and Gold was a Z8-23
thriller over the Doylestown Hornets, which
helped to retaliate for their football win.
Co-Captains Walter Moore and Norm Willox
headed the tfam on the tioor, and together with
John Burns, led the squad in scoring honors.
Burns, high scorer in ten of our games, had a
seasons total of 118 tallies and an average of
6.5 per game. Moore and Willox were close be-
hind him with totals of 112 and 105 points,
respectively.
A resume of the season shows Ambler's total
scoring output at 636, or an average of 35.3 per
game. The same tigures for the opposition show
a 766 point total and a 42.5 average. Our tinal
standing in the Bux-Mont was eighth place with
a won-lost percentage of 389.
The seniors who have finished their work on the
boards are Moore, Willox and Clark. Next
year's hope will depend largely upon Schneider,
Rex, Mallozzi, and, of course, Burns.
In closing we wish to mention the splendid
leadership of Coach johnny Dwight. There was
no Louie Thompsons or Sam Mallozzis around
AHS this year, but Mr. Dwight built up an
outfit that never said die until the final whistle.

SENIOR BASKETBALL . . . GIRLS
Dear Diary:
December 21-Today opened our girls'
basketball season for 1948-1949. We trounced
our opponents, Lansdale, 44-11. We racked
up the points in the first period and concluded
the second period with just a few more points.
January 7-Although a few weeks of practice
elapsed, we stepped in to defeat Souderton on
our home fioor 37-29.
January 13-Another day, another game. We
really conquered Abington with a score of 44-11.
tThat must be our lucky number.J

gressing, with our opponents getting more dif-
ficult all the time. The odds were against us

January 27-Wow! The ball had no choice
but to go in today. We beat Springfield 33-11.
We showed them, didnyt we, gang? tThey beat
us last year.J Homeward bound we came, with
many bruises.
February 3-Upper Merion met with a sur-
prise when we defeated them 27-21. They had
been undefeated.
February 8-Today we rolled up the score
against Conshohocken. Another cheer for our
team. The scoreboard flashed in red numbers of
42-15. Home again, bursting with pride.
February I0-We played our final game
today-Cheltenham on our home floor. Until
today Cheltenham had won thirteen straight
games. We fixed 'em. Score at final periodg
35-13. COur favorlj All told, this season we
racked up 308 points against our opponents 138.
fGive our guards a lot of credit for our op-
ponents' comparatively few points.J joan Paul,
our captain, was high scorer with 147 points.
Wow!
Our junior Varsity came through the season
with only three losses. VVarning to next year's
opponents: Varsity guard, Grace McGee, will
be back with a very promising team to back
her.

Dear Diary:
Saptember-.Vrrurfmber-These were the or-
ganization and routine months. Bob Eisenhard
was elected president, Paul Seaver, vice-presi-
dent: Claire Everding, secretaryg and Mabel
Marple, treasurer. We met alternate Monday
nights and debated the questions pertinent to
current events. The weeks after our Monday
meetings, tive people were selected to debate
in large meetings at other schools.
Also during this period of time, several of our
students took part in Foreign Policy Association
discussions, which were held at the Bellevue-
Stratford Hotel in Philadelphia. Diana Handy
represented Ambler on the student committee
that planned the FPA meetings.
November-January-Forum spent most of its
regular time and a lot of extra time working
on a radio script. The subject of the debate
that was broadcast January 17 on KYW was,
"Should the United Nations Be Changed Into
a World Government?'l The people who par-
ticipated in the broadcast were Diana Handy,
Sonya Nylund, Marguerite Reverdy, Bob Eisen-
hard, and Bradley Taylor. Paul Seaver, Mary-
lou Collier, and Claire Everding helped a great
deal in the writing of the script but did not get
a chance to represent Ambler on the air.
January-June-On February 1, Ambler enter-
tained nine other schools at a debate on the
subject of our broadcast. Paul Seaver was a
speaker. After the discussion a delectable dinner
was served under the direction of Miss Abrams
and Miss Panton. Entertainment was supplied
by talented students of Ambler High School.
FORUM
Throughout the remainder of the year we
continued to enjoy our regular Monday night
meetings. On March 18, we gave a barn dance
at the Youth Hostel in Prospectville-a perfect
end for an active and successful year.
We express our thanks to Mr. Raymond Dun-
can, our sponsor, who certainly helped us in
every way possible.

A-CAPPELLA CHOIR
Dear Diary:
thi December 22 the choruses gave their an-
nual Christmas Carol Service. lt began very
effectively with all the girls. dressed in white
and carrying lighted candles, marching slowly
down the aisles of the high school auditorium
singing "Adeste I"ideles." The program pro-
ceeded with the liible reading of The Christmas
Story hy Mr. Kerschner. Then special choral
arrangements of Christmas carols were sting by
the Girls' and Boys' Choruses. Senior Girls'
Chorus, Mixed Chorus, A Capella Choir, and the
Forrest Avenue Chorus.

"Jesu Bambionof' The traditional "O Holy
Night" was sting hy Mary .lane Ii. Thompson,
who, incidentally. also conducted the Senior
Girls' Chorus.
The next to last number on the program
was Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus." As is
customary when that great chorus begins, the
audience arose and remained standing while the
mixed chorus sang in an impressive manner.
After our last number, "Good Night and
Christmas Prayer." the girls marched up the
aisles singing the recessional. "lt Came l'pon the
Midnight Clear." The audience was hushed for
a few moments, and then they came bustling otlt

splendid program. Carol Shoemaker, Mitzi

the aecompanists for the evening, have done a
commendable job in the same role all year.
In April the choruses and the band joined
their talents for the annual spring concert. One
of the loveliest numbers was a medley of Vic-
tor Herbert's songs, sting by the A Capella
Choir, and accompanied by the band.
Choir also participated in the baccalaureate
services.
'Twelve choir members were selected for llis-

SENIOR BAND
The year started out with a bang, as we once
more started rehearsing for football season. We
felt proud to have the largest band in the Bux-
Mont League out there on the held at all the
games, backing up the team. After football
season we retired to the band room for rehearsals
and began preparing for the spring concert which
was held in April.
Seventeen of our members represented us at
the Bux-Mont Band Concert held at Souderton
High School in early March. We regretted that
we were unable to send representatives to South-
eastern District Band because of the incon-
venient time at which it was held.
We were led through a successful year by our
conductor, Mr. Geary, and our officers: Jack
Kleinfelder, President: Dominic Pugliese, Vice-
President: Peggy Lou Geary, Financial Secre-
tary: Punl-:ie Maxwell, Secretary: Lloyd Gold-
man, Librarian.
JUNIOR BAND
The junior Band meets every Thursday morn-
ing during first period. Here the future Senior
band members get their first experience in blow-
ing or banging in chorus. Some of the members
succeed in entering Senior Band while still in
Junior Band: however, they retain their mem-
bership in junior Band. Senior Band is the
goal of all the young enthusiasts in junior Band.

HONOR
Dear Diary:
There are six of us in Honor Society besides
Miss Smith, our sponsor, and we meet every
second Monday for dinner to plan future activi-
ties and meetings. Our president is Claire
Everding vice-president, Punkie Maxwell sec-
retary. Sonya Nylund.
October 12, 1948. Vl'e had dinner at Miss
Smith's. The menus were all in French, and we
had more fun trying to decipher them. Planning
the movie and dance for October 15, 1948, was
the main activity of the evening.
November 8, 1948. Dinner at Claire
l'Iverding's where we ate too much. We had fun

SOCIETY
planning I.ast-Will-and-Testament and Thanks-
giving programs.
December 13, 1948. A special treat for that
evening-dinner at School Inn-given by Sonya
Nylund. After dinner we went to her house and
spent long hours planning our annual Honor
Society Banquet. Following that, we sang.
tNot bad harmony, either.l
Ilcfembcr 27, 1948. The banquet was a suc-
cess, even though Claire got the program all
confused. She told the audience that one of
the speakers wasn't there, and the speaker was
there. By the way, we made the front page of
the Gazette.
January 10, 1949. Carol Shoemaker was
hostess at dinner, and it was superb. IVe selected
the student speakers and the guest speaker for
our induction ceremony to be held February 18,
1949.
February 14, 1949. Our last dinner meeting
was at Marjorie Briesch's. The food was so
good, I think we all gained four pounds. Plan-
ning the initations for our nineteen new members
was lots of fun, and I am very sure the initia-
tion will prove impressive to them.
Good-bye now, Dear Diary. We, the senior
membership will be leaving in June, but our five
junior members will make other entries in time
to come.
Claire Everding
