GREETINGS Since our yearbook for this year is featuring the traditions of Amarillo High School, I should like to point out for you some of the meanings of our traditions and to name some of those which we cherish most. Our traditions take the form of a culture perpetuated, a practice followed, an event observed, or attitudes established. Traditions sometimes become so important as to be almost sacred, and to violate them is a greater offense than the violation of a law. It is, therefore, of the greatest moment that we give heed to the nature of the traditions which we establish. The nature and sacredness of the traditions of an institution are determined somewhat by the age of the in- stitution. This year marks the 62nd anniversary of the first graduating class of Amarillo High School in l894. Among our most cherished traditions are those having to do with the cultures and attitudes which we have developed. These include our outstand- ing school spirit, our fine sportsmanship, our practices in democracy, our emphasis upon moral and spiritual values through the morning devo- tionals, morning watches, and similar activities, our model assemblies, our weekly contributions to charity and benevolences, and our wholesome spirit of genuine friendliness and courtesy which pervades our own numbers and is especially noted in our relations with other schools and visitors upon our campus. There are a number of traditional dates and events that have been observed over a long period of years, a list of which is found in the Golden Rays. My challenge to the students and faculty of Amarillo High School is that you feel a personal responsibility for maintaining and fur- ther establishing these worthy traditions which, to so great a degree, determine the spirit, the efficiency, and the possible achievements of our school.
