We all know him.
We all like him.
He is an intearal part ot those ideals and
standards which make up what We call the school
spirit of AHS.
His understandinq, his interest in us, his
younqness in spirit, his sense of humor prove that
he is a aood sport.
His kindness, patience, and unselfish tem-
perament are evidences ct the character of a
Christian gentleman.
With respect and admiration, the statt of the
l945 La Aircsa dedicate this hook to Mr. Norman,
our principal,
" . . . that from these honored dead
we take increased devotion . . f'

Editor's Word
With a lot of fun and a lot of work we tied up
the memories that made 1944-45 something to
remember. Occasionally a knot slipped or a string
broke, but here it is, ready to be unwrapped.
This is not a bare gift-"The gift without the
giver is bare"-because we put our hearts into giv-
ing it to you.

Who's Who
At THE SANDSTORM Sports Editor's desk and on the basketball court, GLEN
"Mouse" WILLIAMS has displayed his honest enthusiasm for good sportsmanship. H'
consideration, his eamestness, and his friendliness have been appreciated by classmat
and teachers alike. He holds membership in the Student Congress, National Athlet
Honor Society, National Honor Society, Ken Klub, and Quill and Scroll. Admiration
respect for him were shown by the Seniors this spring when they chose Glenn for the
president. ,
Leading the cheers for the Sandies this season, LUCY ANN WILLIAMS has gene
ously served our school with energy and enthusiasm. As Assistant Editor of this yearl
LA AIROSA, she has worked and planned to help make this yearbook a success. l
member of Quill and Scroll, Los Viajeros, and National Honor Society, Lucy Ann w
recognized for her dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism when the studen
and faculty chose her for DAR Girl of 1945. Students such as Lucy Ann set the hi
standards of friendliness, sportsmanship, and service that make us proud of our scho
Consistently winning honors in speech, CHRISTIE DOUGHERTY brought home
1945 All-State trophy for declamation. A seasoned trouper of AHS, she has been ca
in roles ranging from a bungling black mommy to a suave society matron. Not onl
on the stage but also in the classroom has she earned recognition. Talent, scholarshij
and varied interests combine to make Christie a graduate of great promise. f
When we think of MARSHALL GETTYS, we remember his sincerity, his thoughtft.
ness, and his willingness to work for the best interests of his school. Playing tackle th
year, Marshall did his share in winning the coveted Victory Bell for the Sandies. Wi'
his characteristic faithfulness he has directed the Student Congress in organizing stam
sales with such success that AHS regularly flies the "Schools-at-War" flag. As the Vi
tory Bell symbolizes success in football, Marshall exemplifies the true Sandie spirit 1
its best.
Perhaps IOHNNIE FAY CRESENS is best known to us as an accomplished your
newspaperwoman who has consistently brought home journalistic honors from int
scholastic contests. This fall lohnnie Fay displayed leadership and dependability 3
Editor of THE SANDSTORM. A good and thorough student, she has been president
Quill and Scroll, vice-president of Ken Klub, treasurer of National Honor Society, a mer
ber of Intemos, president of Advisory, and representative to the Student Congress, whi
proves that pupils as well as teachers consider Iohnnie Fay anasset to any organizatid
or classroom.

Spring 1945
GINGER QWENS' selection as Queen of AHS is alone proof that she is one
of our outstanding students. Queen Ginger has excelled in the realms of
sports, studies, and popularity. In addition to the technique of the tennis court,
Ginger has acquired the skills of the classroom and she is a member of both
Ken Klub and National Honor Society. Ginger's popularity has been indicated
by her election first, as Sophomore Favorite, second as Iunior Favorite, and
finally as Queen of AHS. We'll remember Ginger as our sovereign e- and as
our friend.
PATSY DINAN, a name which stands for intellectual achievement - Long
conceded to be Valedictorian of her class, Patsy has been outstanding in
literary activities of the school. She has written scripts for Mrs. Lela Crossetts
pageants. Her industrious and sincere nature is accentuated by her distinctive
dry wit. Showing her versatility, she is dramatic, musical, and artistic, as well
as literary. She is a member of Ken Klub, National Honor Society, Internos,
V4Book and La Airosa Staffs, and the Dance Committee.
FRED MILLER seems to be a natural leader. At least, his high school
activities indicate recognition of leadership abilities. This year, as Cadet
Lieutenant Colonel, Fred has guided the maneuvers of the First Battalion of
the ROTC, and incidentally, has won for himself a membership of the Hi-l5 of
the ROTC Rifle Team. Back in '44, Fred won distinction by his election as
President of the Student Congress. Also an avid aviation enthusiast, Fred has
been chosen as presiding officer of the high school Flight Club. We salute
Cadet Miller, military expert par excellence.
As a friend and student, MARY AUTRY has the admiration and respect of
all who have worked with her. Assuming the responsibilities of Editor of this
year's LA AIRQSA, Mary has proved he'self to be a real leader and organizer
with enthusiasm to spare. Unselfishly Mary has served her school as a mem-
ber of Student Congress, National Honor Society, Ken Klub, Dance Committee,
and as Honorary Lieutenant Colonel in the ROTC. Friendliness and enthusiasm
such as Mary's are the foundation of that good will which we call our "school
spirit."
Brilliant, clever, cheerful, and alert . . . ELDQN DURRETT, a graduate quite
likely to succeed. Eldon has led the activities of the Ken Klub and of the Quill
and Scroll Society: he has been runner-up for class favorite twice, he has won
letters in Debate and in Number Sense: and he has guided the editorial board
of the SANDSTQRM. Wouldn't those accomplishments in a high school career
indicate success? We all like Eldon-a fine scholar and an expert journalist.

Who's Who i
lanuary Class
The title of Best-All-Around Boy definitely describes Pat. ln the athletic field, he has
participated in both basketball and track activities. As a member of the Cadet Corps, Pat
has distinguished himself by being on the Rifle Team and by commanding Company C.
Student approval was expressed when Pat was elected Sandie cheerleader in his senior
year. Not the least of Pat's accomplishments is his scholastic average which has merited
his membership in Ken Klub, National Honor Society, and National Athletic Honor Society.
Vlfith a friendly smile and abundant enthusiasm, Bourdon Rea has won the
admiration and Commendation of all who have worked with him in his many activities.
He has capably led La Airosa's business staff for the past two years and maintained
scholastic average warranting his membership in Ken Klub, National Honor Society, and
Oiiill and Scroll. Evidence of his enthusiasm has been shown in his election of assistant
cheerleader and later, cheerleader. Teachers and pupils alike will long remember Bout'-'
don Rea's initiative and consideration.
Graduating mid-term with honors of BesteAll-Around Girl and Valedictorian. Lorna
established an enviable record in AHS, Not only in places of honor, but also in places
of work, Lorna served her school. She worked with the Student Congress as its president
and with La Airosa as a member of the editorial staff. Lorna's originality and industry
have added to the activities of Ken Klub, National Honor Society, lnternos, and Tennis
Club. Her honors, talents and personality make an alumna of whom to be proud.
We'll all remember Richard Mixon who so capably led the Sandies this season and
earned for himself a unanimous vote for membership on the All-District Team. His worth
to the Team was proved when he was awarded the Globe-News' Most Valuable Player
watch. Richards leadership qualities have been recognized by his classmates who
elected him their president each high school year. Friendly, genuine, sincere, he has
twice been the favorite of his class. When Mixon leaves, AHS will have lost one of its fin-
est sports and a real favorite,
'Wales is the kind of fellow who will be an asset to any military organization. Proof
of this lies in his list of achievements as a member of ROTC. For the past two years Wales
has been on the rifle team: in his junior ye ar he won the school saber drill contestg as a
senior Wales was commander of Company A. His jovial disposition and gay manner
enhance his genial personality.
These were nominated separately and individually by a secret committee of six fac-
ulty members.

SIMPLE
THINGS
You Can Do To Gel Help
For Your Eyes
Your eyes need all the help they can get.
Don't handicap them with too little. Clean
reflector bowls and bulbs frequently. You'll
get from 20 per cent to 30 per cent more
light.
YOU'LL GET MORE HELP FOR YOUR
EYES when you read, play games or sew
if your lamp shades are light colored or
have white linings. Clean or brush them
regularlyg or, if they're too bad, replace
with fresh shades.
