In years to come, may the reader re- view these now familiar scenes and he glad that he has carried on the school tradition of loyalty, truth, and honor. SCHOOL HISTORY Wlieii the first diplomas from Amarillo High School were awarded in 1895, the number of graduates was very small. Not until 1904 were there enough seniors to have graduation exercises. In that year, exer- cises were held for the five graduates, in the Bivins Building. From that time graduation took place in the Olympic theater, Polk Street at Seventh Avenue, until 1920 when the building burned. For the following three years commencement exercises were held in those churches whose pastors preached the commencement sermon. Since 1923, the Nlunicipal Audi- torium has been used. The Amarillo High School department was first located in the Iohnson Street School, builded in 1906. The enrollment rapidly increas- ed, and in 1910, the building now known as Central Iunior High School was erected and called Amarillo High School. Thirteen years later the Senior High School building was completed. Since its erection it has been enlarged to accommodate the ever increasing enrollment. VV. A. Mc:INTosH, Superintendent R. B. SENIURS By Freeman Baldridge Fortunate, indeed, are the four hundred and forty-one members of the 1935 graduating class of Amarillo High School. Not only can they look back with pride to their highaschool days and say, HWe won the football state championship the year l was graduatedmg but they can also boast of the worst sand storms in che history of the Panhandle. What other graduating class in the past has had the opportunity and pleasure of breathing the exhilarating aroma of fresh sand and receiving the bene- fits of the now famous vitamin "KN Practically every day during the last four months? As an added honor, Amarillo High School was the first high school to be addressed by the governor of Texas, lames V. Allred, after his in- auguration. Too, the 1935 class was the first to give a senior informal dance in the high-school gymnasium. And so, when the boys and girls of thc graduating class of 1935 have found their places in the outside world and are reviewing the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of their last year in high school, they can say with pride, 'tl was graduated from Amarillo High School, the home of the Golden Sandstormln ,L , Zuuln Nunn Vkfocmzlc Busscxncycr Iulin Locwcnstern V14 1' l'n'x1zfz'i1t l'1'1'.v1zfr'f1t SV!7't'lllI'V',I-fl'Il.SI1ft'V CY Y JUNIORS 4 fi fFront Rowj Marian Mead. THE SUPHS by Iohn lVlcGowr1n The sophomore class of Senior High ls not a very serious lot, Though you may wonder why. They think sehool's not so hot. As l listen to some of them talk, l hear them say with a woeful sigh, Two more years are left to walk, The beloved floors of Senior High. Sophs donit know the luck they have For when theyire seniors some sweet clay, Theyill not think that schoolis so bad, Though now that time seems far away. During school days the best of fun Will be had by the most CMostly those who've their home work done, They never see any ghostsj . Lifels ahead. They give him the chance to put into practical use the things about which he is learning. They help him to make new friends who are interested in the same things as is he. Among the clubs can be found one which will meet best the stu- dentls individual need and interest. The glee clubs, the orchestra, and the baud offer an outlet to those who Want music. The R. 0. T. C. department is training boys in dis- cipline, Physical fitness, and skill in the use of the rifle. The Latin and Spanish clubs Provide for a detailed study of those languages and the va- rious customs practiced by the Latin and Spanish speaking People. De- bate and dramatic clubs develop poise and self-assurance. The history clubs build a background for Political and social life. The business, the engineering, and the domestic science clubs teach better use of the prac- tical and everyday sciences. LA AIROSA STAFF Fllen Uiulnhres Qhditorj. THE CALL OP TI-IE SEA By Lois Crawford Behold in my daydreams I fancy I see The rolling green ocean keeps calling to me. Ir whispers so softly in dreams at night I often CLll'll longingly and wish that I might Fling my tired body to her tender breast, Witli my face turned heavenward, lay me to rest. Again turning about me, I see that I could I-Ielp weary mortals if only I wouldg And though I am weary, burdened, or in Pain, I feel I IIIUSE turn to help others again. But the sea beckons longingly, "Come, let's be awayln And in this brief moment of confusion and strife, I pray to my God to put strength in my life. SNOWPALL By Harry Neiihardt I like to sec the snow fall Upon the ground so white, So many flakes like little balls, That seek a rest from flight. It Plummets downward to the earth, And finally on the earth it lanclsg At some future time it may give birth To a flower of Godas own hands. For all we know it may have life, Because God can be seen in this little flakeg It seems so quiet and free from strife, Surely God IHLISE be in its wake. MZ? Q .... PARVVFLI., Amt. Cashier I A. H. XVARE, View Prwizfwlt P P r P AAA A TINY RED I-IAT I Ruth Pasco It is with vivid recollection that I remember my first visit to my unclels home. Ac that time I was about eight years of age and had never been on a large farm. This particular farm was located in the center of what is known as the Black Forest, in the mountain region of Colorado. The log cabin, an affair of four huge rooms, was located in the center of a large clearing and was surrounded by various kinds of flow- ers. Beyond the cabin was a somewhat smaller building which housed chickens, turkeys, and ducks. Witli awe and wonder I explored the en- tire Premises, but I was very careful not to get too close to the one and only horse- a very ancient mare called Bess. Une day, when I had grown more bold and less afraid of the dogs, I noticed a beautiful, bril- liantly colored butterfly, immediately I decided to follow it. Somewhat later, to my L1EtC1' dismay, I discovered that I was completely out of sight of the house and was surrounded by trees. Quickly I turned to retrace my steps. Suddenly I froze in horror. Standing before me, glaring at me with huge eyes, and entirely blocking the Path, was-as it seemed to me-the largest, most ferocious looking object that had ever walked on two legs. I did not stop to take in every detail, but I knew that che ani- mal, if such it could be called, was rather gray in color and looked as if it were wearing a tiny red hat. With a scream that must have been heard three miles away, I fled in terror toward the clearing. Arriving at the house, I fell breathless in IVIother's arms. Even today it remains a great joke that the "awful thingn that chased me was only Uncle's pet turkey gobbler. umllll IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIllllIllllIIIIIIIIIlIIlIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIlllllllllllllllllllll lllll E WILLIAMS HARDWARE Co. 1 Distributors of I DRAPER MAYNARD 3 The 'lucky Dogn Brand I Athletic Equipment I 1 4 I 6 I 5 TAYLOR ST AMARILLO 4 P COCKRELL-LOKEY INC.
