An lfnglisliinan, according to legend, gets three laughs from a joke first, when the jolte is told: second, when it is explained to him, and third, when he understands it. The ITl'L'1lL'lllllL!1l gets only the first two-he never sees the point. The American gets one--he won't wait for the point. You know, the "Greasy Grind," or something. The Sandies have played just two games this season-the second one this aftemoon- and they have won both of them. Some stuff! The pessimists tried to tell us that we didn't have a team this year, but we knew the Sandies wouldn't let us down. The Tri-State Fair has been here for the last week, and l'm getting sick of it. hionday afternoon I went with a bunch of kids fwe had the afternoon offj, Tuesday nite with Bill, Thursday nite with Bill, Gene, and Mtirky, and last nite with some pep squad kids. It was just after pep rally and we all had on our pep squad suits. We really had a good time. One young man told us that hc was a Sandie about seven years ago, and of course that meant a lot to us. Seven years ago, I thought Sandies were little Scotchmen. Write soon and tell me the news. Love to all from all, Suzy. October 30, 1937 Dear Nladge, liver bod here is lannin to celebrate Halloween toni ht because tomorrow's . Y 7, . . P . g . . . g . Sunday. Ivlurkys giving a big shin-dig tonight and I was just on the verge of getting ready, but just had to stop a minute and write you about the goings-on here. Last night the Sandies played in Plainview and walked off with a 39-o score. QThey're making up for that 33-o loss at Port Arthur last week. It really knocked the whole town for a row of black-eyed peas, but it's O. K. nowj. Our pep squad spelled "Hello" with colored flashlights and it sure went over keen. The Sandies beat a couple of Oklahoma teams this month. I just guess we're plenty good. Really do like school--fancy that froin mel Say, you remember B. Linn, don't you? Well, he's our senior president. The day when campaign speeches were made for class officers in assembly, each candidate got up on the stage and made a speech. But when they called on B., he didn't come out on the stage. lust when everyone was getting kinda worried, a hlare of music struck up in the hall and in marched B. escorted by several perspiring young gentlemen bearing placards on which the names of B.'s opponents were written. Mr. Linn, wearing a red wig and stuff, was being pulled in a little red wagon. While his little band played "Stars and Stripes Forever," he screeehed out his humble message to the crowd. He was really a scream! fand so did the student bodyj. Ha, hal Yesterday I was tearing through the typing room wastebasket, hunting for a valuable lesson I had thrown away, and I came across a masterpiece of an essay that had been written by some bright spot in the school-even little brother Habbakuk couldn't have done so well. It's enclosed. Well, so long. Gotta go jump in the tub 'cause it's 7:30. We have to go back to school tomorrow from our glorious Thanksgiving holidays. We have been doing a lot at school during the past few weeks. We elected a school queen this year at the regular class officers' election, and the coronation ceremony was held in assembly in the first week of Novemberkthe fifth, I think. In the last few years, the queen has been crowned at a football game, and with not much ceremony, but this year they really did it up brown, with ladies-in waiting, etc. Very elaborate and beautiful. Thelma Houston is the queen, and she wore a lovely dress of gold metallic cloth or something. We played Pampa on Armistice Day, and maybe you think it wasn't exciting! The Sandies made two touchdowns, but they were both called back. At the middle of the fourth quarter, the score was still o-o. Then in the last minute or two of play, Bill Thompson threw a pass across the goal line to C. W. Kelley. The crowd really went wild. lust a few seconds later, the game ended with the score 6-o. The night before the Pampa game we had another pep rally at the Capitol theater. Mr. Barnum, the manager, has been letting us do that often. After pep rally we stay to see the show. We also beat Lubbock on Thanksgiving and that made us district champions. The Sandies are really going to town this year, they're doing especially well for a team that was predicted not to have anything. Well, so much for tonight. I took my last exam the zoth and that finished me for last term. fNearly finished me foreverj. We got our report cards yesterday and stuff. Today the Hi-Y boys sold student directories for a nickel and all the first string Sandies have already signed mine. They have the names, addresses, and phone numbers of ill the kids in A. H. S. and Iunior College in them. Really presh. By the way, you wrote that your history class had to study President Roosevelrfs speech to Congress on Ianuaiy gtb. Well, our whole student body sat in the auditorium and listened to it over the radio. A local merchant furnished the radio. Gipsy Smith, that great evangelist, talked in our assembly on Ianuary 4. He preached at the Nlunicipal Auditorium every night for two weeks. lust gobs of people were turned away every night because of a packed house. Be sure to hear him if he ever comes to your town to talk. A Student Congress has been organized in A. H. S. The president and one other officer from each advisory room belong. The purpose of this organization is to represent the students in making rules and regulations in the school. Pretty keen idea, don't you think? B. l.inn is president. Exams were finished Thursday, as l said, and that night the pep squad had its annual banquet at the Amarillo Hotel Coffee Shop. Afterwards we had a dance at the Elks Club and really had fun.
