We entered with open hearts and minds, ready to accept or challenge all that faced us. The importance of our years at Amador cannot be over-emphasized. The friendships, the anticipation, the heartbreaks, the great expec- tations experienced within the doors of Amador will never be forgot- ten, but it is only when we are seniors and can look back upon it all that we realize how important these memories will be and can truly appreciate them for what they are worth. The responsibility of being a senior, and the realization that soon we will take the big step out into the world, weighs heavy on the minds of us all. Whether we suc- ceed or fail in life will be dependent on us and what our outlook on life is. There is no denying the fact that our years at Amador have laid the foundation of that outlook. In June, when we, the class of 1966, take our final walk down the steps of Amador we can only hope that we have made an imprint on Amador that is as important as the one Amador has made on us. However, we can never truly say good- bye to Amador, for a little bit of this school will always remain with us. True to thee we'll always be, purple and gold of Amador. This quote from ancient Sanskirt writings has been adopted by the American Field Service. It truly exemplifies the spirit of the foreign exchange program. During the 1965-66 program 1 , 145 Americans were sent abroad to further this ideal. My personal experience in Thailand was one I'1l never be able to forget. Maybe this is because I had a wonderful, loving family. I think that this is one of the most important aspects of the program. The Thais tried to understand my concepts and I tried to understand theirs, The bonds that were created during that summer are deeply rooted and could never be severed, Buddhism is ingrained in the Thai people so I felt it was necessary for me to learn of their religion. I was fortunate enough to be able to participate in Buddhism as an ordained monk. This experience gave me many invaluable lessons about life. This will probably be the last time that I will be able to formally thank the local AFS chapter. Without the hundreds of people working here at home my experience abroad would not have been possible. Thank you AFS, very much Jim Krause I came from Laos, arriving in the United States seven months ago, and I've been staying with my American family ever since. I' ve been attending Ama- dor since September and I know a lot about how the students study in High Schools in the U. S. I like the idea of American high schools, which is very good, and satisfies me too. In my country we have no choice of the subjects that we like to study. The government orders and offers the subjects to us that we have to study each year. We know what we have to study when the school year starts. One thing that is very different is that when we miss a test, we can't make it up the next day. And this thing makes me like Ameri- can high schools very much. I think the kids in any high school are almost the same. Even in my country or here: there are some who are good and some who are troublesome. I hope my stay here can lead to understanding between our two nations. -KHAMPHONE SISOUNTHONE, Age 19 Vientiame, Laos EXECUTIVE COUNCIL, lst Row: Nancy Anderson, Tuny Hansen, Bill Rugemer, Sue Swanson. 2nd Row: Joanne Caporusso, Terry Allison, Molly Hill, Pam Paul, Pat Geiger. 3rd Row: Doug Amis, Brad Black, Dick Landers, Dave Haskell. aw . flfiw. ,M W STUDENT BODY PRESIDENT BRAD BLACK SAYS: High School is for growing up. Fullback Dave Newton made the first touch- down. Quarterback Ed Kobayashi threw a 12-yard pass to Joe Theodore for the sec- ond TD. Both kicks were made by Ray Calija. In the closing minutes of the game, Jerry Smith pounced on a loose ball to save Amador and give the Dons a tie game. Ygnacio Valley 0 7 0 7--14 Amador 7 0 7 0--14 Nineteen sixty-five marked an unforget- table football season for Amador Valley High School. The varsity eleven took a second place, while the JV's took EBAL honors for a third straight year. Led by All- League choices Ray Calija, Jim Krause, Dave Newton. Bob Ripley, Al Smith and Joe Theodore, the Dons scored 126 points while holding nine opponents to 89 points. The Dons held five straight league wins and looked as if the EBAL title would be- come Amador's. Yet the Liberty Lions broke the winning streak and gave the Dons their first loss. The final game was the disappointment of the year, with poor weather conditions and a long fought sea- son, Amador lost its last game to Liver- more. With a 5-3-1 record, Amador varsity placed a little honor under the purple-and- gold record and forced the EBAL league not to underestimate Amadors abilities. Dons hit as hard in the Ygnacio game as they did in the game against Granada. Oons take fmst loss Despite a gallant effort by the de- fense, Amador Dons could not contain the continual thrusts at the goal line by Del Valle and allowed two touchdowns to lose 14-6. The loss was the first for Amador as the Dons had tied in the season opener. The only touchdoum was in the third quarter when Rick Garibaldi chalked up 30 yards, on the option, pitched out to Ray Calija for 20 more, and took it over himself from 20 yards out. Del Valle 7 7 0 0--14 Amador 0 0 6 0-- 6 Coach Wilfley gives a little advice during the game. A Don runs out to intercept an Albany pass Cons thump Alamy "We haven't lost to Albany in four years. We hope to make it five," said Coach Wilfley. And the Dons made it five with a 20-0 victory. Much of the credit goes to Quarterback Rick Garibaldi, who produced two touch- downs and one touchdown pass in the first half. With the return of Dave Newton from a previous injury, the Dons service set the pace and the Dons tore apart the field with a grand total of 206 yards gained. Albany 0 0 0 0-- 0 Amador 0 14 6 0--20 Oons Beat JOhl1 Swett Behind a relentless running attack, Amador ground under a stubborn John Swett eleven by a 20-13 score. Most of the heavy running was done by Dave Newton, 97 yards in 16 carries, and Dave Kirth, 65 yards in 15 carries. Ray Calija made the first touchdown on a pass from Garibaldi. Dave New- ton made the second TD. Late in the 4th quarter Newton carried the kickoff back 20 yards to the Don's 44. On the first down play quarterback Garibaldi, took it into the end zone for the last Amador touchdown. John Swett O 0 6 7--13 Amador 0 6 0 14--20 Cons Stun Salesian In what will probably go down in the books as the biggest league upset of the 1965 season, Amador Don's pounded Salesian Chieftains 28-7. It was Ama- dor's game all the way, as they con- tained the Chieftains to their smallest score of the year. Due to his hard playing game, Ray Calija was named lpgj Q2 Week. He came through with two TD's on a run of 40 yards and a completed pass of 20 yards, with three conversion kicks and three in- tercepted passes. He also returned a kickoff 96 yards to the Salesian two to set up the third score by Rick Gari- baldi. The final score was made by Paul Line from the 13-yard line. The game was certainly one of the most thrilling in the long rivalry between the two schools--despite being played in trying weather conditions. The game, played on a mud-sloshed field, was pri- marily dominated by the tough defensive squads of both teams. Amador scored early when Ray Calija streaked into the end zone from 40 yards out. At the end of the hali it looked like Amador could hold its own. Yet late in the last quarter the jinx appeared and fullback Dave Newton fumbled the ball on the Livermore eleven. The track team is strong now, but we still expect vast improvement. Our field team is doing well with more promise ahead. Even though a team is only as good as its participants, a lot of credit has to be given to the coaches, Mr. Lionvale and Mr. Del Tredici. With the character and enthusiasm these two radiate, they have given the teams a bright, new spirit. We are looking for a successful league season but we are really shooting for the Ceres and Santa Rosa Relays. With the coaching we receive from these two men the teams feel assured of a great year. May we add our small bit? A lot of you soon Will be scattering to college and careers in new lo- cations. Travel is a good thing becauseit broadens the experience and stimulates the mind. Don't be afraid to travel. But take it from the oldest offspring of the Kaiser industrial family -- don't be afraid to come back and make Amador Valley your ultimate home. The younger kids in our family -- Aluminum, Steel, Cement, Jeep and the rest -- went all over the world and they gained a lot of stature. But we were the older brother who stayed home. The Valley, with all its splendor and all that good gravel, was just too good to leave. Once you get out and see a little of the map, we think you'll find as we did 43 years ago.
