Challenges Conquered 1. Becca Charles Home Economics, long-term sub- stitute. k Q ir 2. Henry King lazz Band, A Cappella, Band, Chorus. and Math II. 3. The most unforgettable event in my education career was when I was named Teacher of the Week by the Sacramento Valley Farm journal for promoting their theme for 1978-79. Ag- riculture Means Food. Giles Turner Newspaper, Iournalism, Drama fI!Ad- vancedj, and Advanced Speech. Q 1: 1- 4. Stairs are symbols. They connect lower levels with higher ones. And at the top, we must confront the challenge waiting for us there. How I used to love the creaky, wooden steps that led down to the playground at my elementary school. But I glanced in awe up the bannistered staircase which separated the second floor and the junior high from the lower grades. The steps to my high school were low and easy, shallow, simple. And at the university, there were so many dif- ferent kinds: high and low, old and new, easy and impossible. Stairs have always been a familiar pattern in my dreams as well: stairways in castles. towers and dung- eons that lead to adventure, achieve- ment, despair. All stairs lead somewhere. And si- lently, they shout their challenge: Climb up! So you dare? . Feliz Guthrie Spanish fI!Advancedj, Creative Writ- ing, and Literature II. 5. A dream. At first we know it best as an apparition, a formless thing that emerges gradually, a slow birth from our dark minds. This offspring la pure thingj has a shape, dimension, color. Walter realized his dream in this book. Carol Urbani English 10, 11 QPractical!Scholarshipj, and Yearbook. 'k i i' 6. I entered teacher training college at the age of forty-plus to find that my colleagues were all around twenty years of age. This, however, proved to be an inter- esting four years. Whereas I had wide experience of industry and outside of school, my younger colleagues were all recent graduates from high school. They, therefore, were up to date with the academic subject matter, and this oldfnew situation became a very good working relationship.
