As interest mounted, the question arose, "What should be included in the training of an ath- lete?" Study of this question has produced the most Well-balanced training program American edu- cators have devised: a program of leadership, sportsmanship, and physical education. The athlete then, can no longer be thought of only as a person gifted With skill and dexterity in the field of sports. Rather, he is a .person trained to both leadership and "fol- lowershipfi The athlete is taught to be an individual, While remaining a part of the teamg he is a human person taught to respond to other human persons, taught to win or to lose with the same attitude of friendliness. Highlanders Capture Calls for "Mine" . . . point games . . . cheering students . . . a trophy . . . the volleyball season. This year was one of victory for Alverno's varsity volleyball team. The Highland- ers, with weeks of practice, a determination to win, good sportsmanship, and the per- sonal drive of Miss Dowdy, won the league trophy. G-O-O-O TEAM! . . . Varsity Cheerleaders and specta- tors cheer the Highlanders to victory during league game with Anokia. PROUD VICTORS . . . Miss Dowdy, Kathy Lester, Letter Club president and Chris Elko, GAA presi- dent, display the varsity volleyball trophy before the Student Body.
