The high school orchestra is the only musical organization of its kind in the school and having progressed rapidly, it has taken its place among the leading musical organi- zations of Franklin. Eighteen instruments compose the orchestra and an outstanding feature is that they are all played by boys. Mrs. Rose Meredith, director, has made a success of an organization which several years ago was an uncertain project. Regular practice on each Friday morning at the convocation period has really instituted it as a weekly' activity. The orchestra gave a Wednesday morning program before the student body which was very well received. Six members will be lost by graduation and will leave vacancies very hard to fill. Seven kinds of instruments make up 'the orchestrag the following are the instru- ments, the players and their standing: violins, Joseph Handley, senior, Bruce Jolly, senior, Gilmore Stott, senior, William Mullendore, junior, clarinetsg John Ardinger, junior, John McClain, senior, Boyce McDaniel, freshman and Donald Brewer, seniorg saxophones, Robert Baker, sophomore and Richard Weaver, freshman 3 cornets, Dale Graham, sophomore, Charles Jones, freshman, George Rogers, sophomore and John Sellers, sophomore, trombones, Walter Byers, senior and David'Barrow, sophomore, drums, Charles Adams, freshmang piano, Phillip Johnson, junior. l930

A The Junior Red Cross Council is the executive board which represents the Junior Red Cross of Alva Neal high school. It is composed of twenty members: six seniors, six juniors, four sophomores and four freshmen. They are chosen by the students to represent the various session rooms. The Junior Red Cross has probably been the most active organization this year at Alva Nealg this is accounted for by the fact that practically every student of the school is a member. The annual Christmas party was an outstanding achievement in that seventy-five children of Franklin were made happy by a personal visit from Santa Claus and a gen- eral distribution of gifts. An impressive feature of the party was a very beautiful play, Why the Chimes Rang given in a most splendid manner. Another Christmas activity was the filling -of boxes which were sent abroad. Approximately eighty boxes were filled by members of the organization. Two of the boxes have already been acknowledged by children of Budapest, Hungary. The concessions at the sectional tournament were successfully handled by the club with a degree of financial reward. An interesting magazine sponsored by the National Junior Red Cross, High School Service, was received and distributed to each session room regularly and great bene- fit was derived from it. Upholding the creed of the Hi-Y club which is as follows--to create, maintain and extend throughout the school and community high standards of Christian character- this organization has been a great help to the community and the school. This year has, indeed, been very successful due to the capable leadership of Prof. Vachel Breidenbaugh, who is the faculty sponsor of the club. Living up to the Christian ideals upon which the' organization is based, the mem- bers have attended the Methodist church in a body. Among the other outstanding activi- ties which have been enjoyed are the Father .and Son banquet, which was held in the high school auditorium and served by the pledges, the supervision of ushering at the home basketball games, the annual Holloween party, an annual all-school affair which was put over in a very creditable manner, representation at all conferences that con- cerned the work of the organization, and probably the outstanding feature of this year's work was the adoption of a new constitution which sets forth the ideals and the regulations of the club. As the membership is limited to upperclassmen, it is a goal for which every under- classman strives. X This organization is built on a religious foundation which embraces all Christian denominations, and the effect is seen by clean speech, clean sports and clean living by all members who signify their intentions of living up to the creed of the club.
