The Student Council strives to meet the varied problems which arise and to handle them in a manner that best serves the interests of the school. The membership includes a representative from each organization in school. It is a distinct honor to be a part of the Student Council and each member values the confidence placed in him by his organization. Four members of the Student Council attended the Southern Association of Student Coun- cils fall conference in Oklahoma City. The efficient functioning of the Student Council is in- dicative of the benefits derived from this meeting. Activities of the Student Council include devotionals at the high school assemblies and sponsoring a number of socials throughout the school year. Other officers are Orville Canaan, Vice-President and Myrna Jo Shelby, Secretary-Treasurer. The faculty sponsors are Edna Donley, Gresham Elkins, and Robert Manning. Y-Teen, one of Alva High School's first organizations, is a part of the international teen- age group of Y.W.C.A. The Y-Teen entered into the national Y-Teen project, Chocolates for Christmas. Under the sponsorship of the Kiwanis Club and Working closely With the school administration, the Key Club seeks to develop effective leadership and citizenship among the boys. This year the scope of membership has been broadened to include any boy in high school who is earnestly desirous of rendering unselfish service to his school and community. Activities for the year included a fall picnic and attending the International Organiza- tional Conference at Dallas, Texas. Projects included Thanksgiving and Christmas food bas- kets to a needy family. Perhaps the highlight of the year was the all school dance sponsored by the Key Club just before Christmas, at which time the price of admission was one toy. Its official colors are red and white with the red rose as its flower. The local projects for the year were financed by the money raised from selling at school activities and by dues. The projects this year were sending a Christmas basket to a needy family of five and making Valentine favors for the hospital. The organization voted to give its share of the school carnival proceeds to the high school library. Also a generous donation was made to the local March of Dimes drive. . At the Kid Party in September all the girls who were interested in joining F. H. A, were entertained. In November a joint-installation and initiation with the F. H. A. was held. In January a boy-girl party was featured. The annual parent-daughter dinner was one of the high- lights in the spring. The senior members were entertained at a luncheon in May and the eighth graders were given a tea. It consists of a large chapter room where formal classes are held and Future Farmers meet, the testing room or laboratory where test- ing and grading of farm products and soils will be made, and a well-equipped farm shop is available for training boys in skills of welding, mechanics, carpentry, electricity, and concrete. Students have constructed all built-ins, cabinets, work benches, library and magazine racks for the building. The outstanding activities for the year include a small grain testing plot and 15 acres of wheat owned by the chapter, preparing a float for the Homecoming Parade, initiating 35 Green- horns into the FFA this year, and advancing the Lambert Chapter to the FFA degree. During the first semester the Glee Club gave the assembly program on November 16 and attended the Thanksgiving Festival at Stillwater on No- vember 20. Mr. Fields received his draft call at the close of the first semester and was replaced by Miss Mary Maude Moore. The outstanding spring events for the Glee Club were the participation in the District Contest at Northwestern State College, and the presenta- tion of their annual spring concert. Their Student Council representative was Vir- ginia Myers and their accompanist was Betty Middaugh. The speech activities in Alva High School for 1950-51 have included a variety of program material as well as contest work. Programs were presented in assemblies and for various social and civic groups in the city. Speech letters were presented for the first time this year to all students who met the re- quirements as approved by the Student Council. Speech Tournaments attended included Phillips University at Enid in November, North- western State College at Alva, and Northwest Conference at Fairview in March.
