Thompson Paul Pi. Reynolds President The Board of Directors of the Citv of Al- toona is eoinposed of these nine men. They di- rect an educational system of more than 11,000 students, 575 professional and non-professional employees, and have an operating budget ot S2,400,000.00 They are responsible for seeing that the funds are secured. wisely spent, and that the educational program is adequate. They are also responsible for the study, formation, and approval of policies governing the schools. This past year was marked by four important new acts of the board: the reorganization of the school system which concentrated administrative offices in the Lincoln Buildingg the complete re- equipment of the home economics kitchens, which made them the finest model kitchens in the areag the erection of lights at Mansion Park Field to permit night gamesg and the completion of Keith Athletic Field. ALBERT G. The theme of the 1950 llorseshoe, "Altoona Iligh School on Parade," is a challenge. Viewed from one aspect, life is a continuous parade of persons and events. The progress of this community or of any community is made hy people moving forward together. The progress of communities becomes the progress of the nation. We must, in our modern life. develop leaders and marshals from our groups who will lead the parade in the right direction and at a judicious pace, wisely and firmly toward a successful future. For we cannot he static-we must either march forward or retreat into an already outgrown past. To march together, to follow a trustworthy leader, or to hecome a trustworthy leader--that is our part in the hig parade. During your school life a serious effort was made hy your teachers, adminis- trators, and members of the Board of Education to provide all the necessary train- ing that young people should receive in order to march in this parade of life. It is our sincere hope that your future. in whatever work von may enter, will he a verv successful and happy one. A ' ' class of 1950. C1 in gra tlllilflllllh. . 11 A 1? Mr, joseph N. Maddocks ALTOONA HIGH SCHOOL ON PARADE Since the Senior High School is the foremost section of the public school parade, naturally it is looked upon with considerable interest on the part of the student and the community. Our students engage in activities and programs that are vital, not only to them as maturing young people, but also as real life activities in the community. In athletics, music, dramatics, and many other areas our stu- dents are contributing much to the life and activity of our community. Communi- ty service attitudes acquired in high school should result in high-minded com- munity citizenship later on. WVe hope our graduates possess an everlasting faith in our American idealsg qualities of industry, character, and personality that will insure successg ambition and courage that is able to surmount all difficultiesg and resourcefulness sufficient to adjust to the ever changing problems of the world of tomorrow. We sincerely hope the Altoona High School has made a deep and lasting impression on every member of this vearis graduating class. Improved citizenship is the measure of our success. It is a pleasure to extend congratulations and good Wishes to the class of 1950. 12 Our Assistant Principal AFTER THE PARADE You havc choscu tlu- the-mc "Altoona lligh School ou Paraclcn for thc 1950 llorscshoc aucl rightly so. siucc you march through lifc, not alouc, hut among luuiclrccls of othcr marchers. Our Senate is like a body of these marshals. It is composed of twenty-tive mem- bers representing each phase of high school life. As each class enters high school, they elect four of their members to represent their class in the Senate during their high school career. Representatives from every major organization in the school complete the group. These members meet during the activity period to discuss school problems and activities. Under the sponsorship of Miss Kathryn Bloomfield. the Senate led our school triumphantly through the trying days of the evaluation, in addition to their usual activities of planning homeroom programs. settling school problems, making and enforcing school laws, and sponsoring various programs throught the school. This spring a special committee was chosen by the Senate to study the problem of assembly conduct. As a result the students became more Willing to co- operate with the entertainers who presented their talents in the high school auditorium. 20 As the Mid-ccntnrians marched on- ward through the last year of their high school career, thev took time out from the academic side of life to enjoy the lighter so- cial life. Following the installation of their class officers, the class sponsored a Hal- lowe'en Dance. and later in April, held the lirst Sock Hop. The seniors were conspicuous in all the school activities. Seniors took the majority ol' the parts in the English Department Plav and other dramatic presentations. Thev sold heanics to help boost school spirit. Most of the A Cappella choir was comprised of seniors. and it was the upper classlnen who comprised over half of the cast of the Annual Show. The class of 1950 prcdominatecl on the gridiron as Well as on the haskethall floor. and their weight help- ed to shape and estahlish the policies of the sehool through their representation in stn- dent government. The Mid-centnrians marched ont of school historv in the late spring. There was the Senior Banquet, the music and dancing at the Senior Prom, the final exams, the Baccalaureate. the Cornmencement- then it was all over. Thus the Mid-centniw ians fell ont of the A. ll. parade in order to join the other parades of life after high school with new goals, new friends. and many pleasant memories. 21 The Senior Class Seated--W. Homeroom Representatives Girls' League The first meeting of the Girls, League, the initiation of officers by Miss Clara Cockrille, pav- ed the way for a series of fine assemblies. One of the first assemblies was presented by students. By acting out couplets, the girls illustrated the bad habits of present day teen-age girls, provid- ing beneficial and amusing entertainment. Mrs. T. C. Orr, Altoona Mirror Columnist, spoke on the subject "The Perfect Marriagev, and a panel by several of the girls followed. Personality and good grooming were stressed by Mrs. Harry Shaeffer, of the Shaeffer Studio. The efficiency with which the Girls, League meetings are run is augmented by the newly es- Miss Eleanor G. This committee of girls is posted at each door for Girls, League assemblies in order that the conduct of the girls and the rapidity with which they assemble might be improved. Coming to the aid of those "in distress" is one of the services offered by the Girls' League. They can furnish needle, thread, or scissors dur- ing a crisis. The purpose of the League is to develop a greater understanding among the girls, and the League has done its utmost to see this aim realiz- ed. N 82 Seated-S. Wertz, F. M ML Cnllough, I. Brown, C. Boys' Federation The first regular meeting of the Boys' Fed- eration was called to order on September 22 to begin the 1949-50 term. At this time Dr. Schlegel and Mr. Bashorc spoke to the boys on supporting all the athletic activities of the school. The purpose of the Boys' Federation is to create more interest in school activities and to advance their welfare physically, socially, men- tally, and spiritually. This group meets once a month for programs featuring the presentation of athletic awards, songfests, outstanding speak- ers, moving pictures, and other matters of inter- est. Outstanding was Cameron Beck, personnel director of the New York Stock Exchange, who spoke on American Youth. The Federation places constant stress on im- proving the school and its activities. It encour- ages the boys to attend the football and basket- ball games to help cheer on the team. This year the boys and girls had a suggestion box to which they contributed ideas for their programs in the auditorium. .83 Mr. Hugh G. Black very any omg ,yn jjiae ,SZAQOK Difficult 1Jl'UI5lK'lll. For the first time individual pictures of the faculty appear on the pages. In the athletic section. also for the first time. the cross country team has been given complete coverage. This year the theme, A. H. S. on Pa- rade, has been used to compile the Horse- shoe, on the basis that life is a parade of many persons and events. The staff also endeavoured to crowd between the covers as many personalities, scenes, activities, and remembrances as possible, so that this book will serve as an illustrated historv of this particular year for the future that lies be- vond high school. Editing the Mountain Echo gives each inein- ber of the staff the beginnings of a skill in news- paper work and the fun that comes from working together on a complicated project. FUTURE TEACHERS' CLUB Every other Monday after school, a large group of students met with their sponsor, Mr. Lantz, as the Future Teachers of America Club. An intensive study was made of the teaching profession. lts requirements and problems were thoroughly discussed. The purpose of the club was to promote interest in teaching. Climaxing a year's study, club members were sent to various grade schools in the city to gain practical experi- enee. CLUBS HALL PATROL One of the many student services to the school was the Hall Patrol. Nearly one hundred boys and girls under Miss Kathryn Bloomfield's supervision comprised this group. Their duties were to check hall passes and to keep order in the halls during classes. All difficulties encoun- tered by a hall patrol were recorded for the su- pervisor's consideration. This service was very effective and it was appreciated by the entire school. SENIOR HI-Y Twenty-two senior Hi-Y members and their director, Mr. Jack Oyler, had much to be proud of in 1949-1950. They gave a fine showing for the Altoona Y. M. C. A. in basketball. The two boys who were sent as delegates from A. H. S. and the Altoona Y. M. C. A. to the convention at Williamsport were elected to the House of Repre- sentatives Youth and Government Conference which was held in Harrisburg in March. Several of the Hi-Y boys were counselors at Y. M. C. A. camp sessions. On their agenda the Senior Hi-Y also includ- ed Co-ed parties with the Y-Teens. SENIOR HI-Y First Row-ll. Iseuberg, S. A very active year was spent by the boys in arranging social activities and money-making projects for the club. Frequent swimming parties were open to club members only. To vary the programs, a co-ed night was held every fourth Saturday at the Y. M. C. A. In order to make money to enable the membership to make a field trip to New York, a roller skating partv was held in the spring. NATURE OBSERVATION Did you happen to see a group of industrious students at Lakemont Park gathering leaves? They were in all probability members of Miss Faustis Nature Observation Club. The purpose of this club was to give an opportunity to stu- dents to learn to appreciate the out-of-doors. Their goal was a practical outlook on conserva- tion, seedage and propagation. At Christmas time this group arranged a display on the practi- cal uses of evergreens. jk g gan! PYRAMID CLUB Working in unison to build symmetrical fig- ures, the Pyramid Club, under the sponsorship of Miss McGinnis, worked out "pyramids', in after school sessions in the girls, gymnasium. The sixty girls who comprised the club took part in the annual show and school assemblies. They entertained the Kiwanis Club and also pre- sented a program at the Cresson Sanitorium. SQUAD LEADERS To aid in the daily exercises, to take care of equipment, to open lockers at the close of each class, and increase the general efficiency in the gym, the Gym directors appointed thirty-six sen- ior and junior boys as squad leaders, each being chosen for his gymnastic skill and ability. Miss Sarah Louise LeVan The 1949-50 A. H. dramatic program start- ed with "Sugar and Spice" presented by the ad- vanced dramatic class under the direction of Miss Sarah Louise LeVan, dramatic instructor. On December 2, the cast, crew and director of the English Department play, "Papa Is All", won honors for themselves in the excellent pre- sentation of this light-hearted drama of a Penn- sylvania Dutch family. The Christmas spirit was reflected through the presentation of "Gloria", which terminated the dramatic activities for the year 1949. During the second semester emphasis was placed upon play production. Several of the presentations were: "Uncle Julian and the House- hoatv, "To Thee, Dear Sisterv, and "Submerged", the last featuring an all boy cast. Also a new course in make-up was introduced hy Miss Le- Van. The advanced classes wrote original plays for use in the class room. This record fails to take into account the last minute rallies, close games, or bad breaks that plagued the season's play. The team featured a good passing attack, and in this department far outdistanced its oppo- nents. A speedy halfback, Ron Grove, whose 66 point total was second highest in the county, led the running and scoring attack and earned the "most valuable playerv award. Failure to hold the lead in the second half resulted in a 20 to 7 loss to Wind- ber. Altoona's tussle with Westinghouse provid- ed several thrills for the fans as Grove scored on two long touchdown runs, but the visitors finally won out, 31 to 14. Losses to Vandergrift and New Kensington followed. Coach Bashore started a new lineup in the Latrobe game and a very fine contest resulted. The 1950 Football Season Hon Cates, quarterback, set a new pass attempt record when he completed 13 of 25 passes, one of which was for a touchdown. The next week an unbeaten Greensburg squad, looking for an easy victory, heat Altoona by only one point, 13 to 12. The most thrilling game of the season was played at Point Stadium in Johnstown, October 29. The Maroon and NVhite lads carried a 13 to 6 lead into the fatal final quarter. A last minute rallv and touchdown gave the victory to the johns. 24 to 20. Next Altoona was handed its first shutout bv a strong Penn High team and lost the follow- ing week at NVilliamsport. Girls, Intramural Sports is an important item in the lives of the athletic-minded girls in our school. Many activities are offered to girls un- der the direction of Miss McGinnis. These girls are not just plaving a game, thev're learning the arts of cooperation. good sportsmanship, and de- pendability. They spend many afternoons in the gym struggling to bring their team to victory. Out of door sports are played at Prospect Park when the weather pe1'mits. The first important game of the year is bad- minton. This game requires a quick eye along with muscle coordination. Eight girls partici- pated in this sport. Next on the agenda was the all important game of basketball. Competition was keen when Altoona High School's girl basketeers met on the gym floor. After an exciting basketball session the girls' athletic activities were brought to a close by kickball, softball contests, and that ever popular game, volley-ball. To girls outstanding for their participa- tion in the yearis intramural activities recogni- tion Was given. The highest award is given a girl who has taken part in every sport. A maroon blazer is awarded the participants with an ac- cumulated score of 350 points. Accumulation of these points begins in the sophomore year. termi- nating in the presentation of the awards at the end of the senior year.
