ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL PAUL A. ZETLER The Forty-ninersv In Search of Gold Through the ages, mankind has been following a dream-a vision of a fuller life, of more satisfying rewards for endeavor, and a state of peace and goodwill among men. In our own brief history we iind a group, known as the Forty-niners, who crossed sea and desert, many losing their lives on the way, in order to seek some precious thing which they thought would make the dream of mankind come true. So each of us is a Forty-niner, searching for something which is precious to us and which can help in making our visions become reality. One of the objectives of our school is to give to the visions of each depth and substance, so that eventually we too can find the mother lode of humanity's vision of more perfect things to come. To each of you as you leave the Altoona High School we hope that we have given the proper tools for your prospecting and we hope that in using these tools you may find happiness and success. JOSEPH N. MADDOCKS Our Responsibilities As Americans In 1849 the lure of gold drew Americans westward. Today we still strive for value but we recognize that real worth resides in human, rather than material, resources. The strength of our nation is inherent in the strong characters of enlightened and mature citizens. May I suggest six qualities necessary to such strength of character? First: an individual must learn to take it and not be disturbed by misrepresentation and the detractions of others. Second: full individual stature requires a sense of humor to alleviate tension and self-pity. Third: individuals must know their stuff. We need men who know what they are talking about. This group is still quite small. Fourth: an indi- vidual must have perseverance and endurance if he is not to falter in the race. Fifth: an individual must be generous enough to participate in the race without fouling others. Sixth: good judgment based on knowledge and experience is essential to a strong character. With these qualities you can assume full responsibility as an Amer- ican and be a source of strength to others. Congratulations and best wishes. Page Fourteen
