CLOSE HARMONY
BUILDS FOR A BETTER FUTURE
This is a triumphant year! The darkness
of world conflict is passing. The men of the
armed forces of our country are returning
to their native land-their schools, their
work, their homes. Life is coming back to
normalcy.
But We cannot rest on the victories of the
past. To "win the peace," we must develop
greater understanding, tolerance, unity, and
fidelity among men and nations.
Harmony is our theme as we face the
"open road."

Board of Directors
The Board of School Directors of the City of
Altoona is organized by authority and under the
provisions of the Constitution and laws of the Com-
monwealth of Pennsylvania.
The Board consists of nine members elected by
the voters of the city for a term of six years each.
The terms of office are so arranged that not more
than three terms expire in any one year. The direc-
tors serve without remuneration. On the first Mon-
day of December of each year, the Board organizes
by electing a president and a vice president. Regular
meetings are held the first Monday of each month,
adjgugned and special meetings are held Whenever
nee e .
The functions of the Board are fixed and con-
trolled by state law fPennsylvania's School Codel.
The more important items which require the atten-
tion of the Board are: levying taxes for support of
schools, authorizing expenditures, employing per-
sonnel and fixing salaries, providing adequate school
buildings, approving curriculum, and purchasing
textbooks, furniture, and other supplies.

A Challenge for
Enduring Peace
Principal
The challenge of the future is to achieve the real art of living
together. Graduation from our high school should mean that you
have acquired such attitudes toward your fellowmen that you
would strive to live with them harmoniously, helpfully, and con-
structively.
This world, torn with strife and misunderstanding, needs cit-
izens with a capacity for self-direction, a sense of personal and
civic duty. We need a generation with clear vision and undaunted
determination to search for the truth. The enduring peace that
the world is so eagerly seeking must be erected on the foundation
of character, truth, and understanding.
We hope that, in your experiences in the Altoona High School,
you have acquired not only the ability but also the urge to make
your contribution in the establishment of a better World in which
to live - a world in which each individual can experience true
freedom and the opportunity to achieve to the limit of his capacity.

Expert Counsellors
They're Human!
Harmony in the classroom, teamwork in sports, and cooperation in
all school activities are obtained under the guidance of the A. H. S. faculty.
These capable, well trained people are not only our advisers and teachers
-they are also our friends.
Although we, the pupils, must assume responsibility for our own
classroom work, although we plan parties, dances, and other activities,
all eyes turn to the teachers when new problems and difficulties arise.
They help us to solve these problems.
The members of our faculty have earned degrees from institutions
located in many parts of the United States, a few have studied in other
countries. Their experience has been rich and varied. They are actively
interested in community affairs. They are fully qualified to prepare us
for good citizenship.
At the beginning of the school year, ten of the group were serving in
the Armed Forces. During the first semester, Messrs. Moore, Lamont,
Whittaker, and Wood returned to civilian life, six are still in the Service.

Student government in A. H. S. is capably and efficiently
conducted by the members of the student Senate. This
group is made up of representatives from the sophomore,
junior, and senior classes and every major organization of
the school.
Many of the little things,- as Well as some more important
accomplishments around A. H. S., are the result of the
efforts of the Senate members.
Along the entertainment line, the students witnessed a
gala event when the Senate sponsored one of the first dances
of the year-the Hallowe'en Dance.
This group aided the American Legion Auxiliary by
collecting food and soap coupons for the benefit of veterans
in Valley Forge hospital. They took part in the observance
of American Education Week, helped in the book drive, and
were active in collecting student contributions for the
"March of Dimes." College afternoon was sponsored by
the Senate. The group provided ushers not only for this
occasion but also for P. T. A. night and Visitors' Day.
This year the Senate constitution was revised. Much
interest was shown in helping other schools organize stu-
dent governments. Six delegates Were sent to the Student
Government Convention.
The sophomore members of the organization take care
of the indispensable "Lost and Found" department and in
case you're wondering who trimmed the trees in the light-
wells at Christmas-the Senators did that, too.

From rmed Forces to Classroom
Veterans at Work
Under the G. I. Bill of Rights, a number of veterans of World
War II, honorably discharged from the armed forces, returned to
our school to continue their education. Some of these men were
enrolled in regular high school classes, but the majority of them
were enrolled in either the vocational night school, or in the Special
Veterans' Group. The latter group, taught by Eugene Lantz, pro-
vided an accelerated course in English and Social Studies with the
opportunity to enroll in other high school classes. A number of
these veterans planned to work off the requirements for a high
school diploma, and many of them completed the requirements
during the year.

There is no death! the stars go down

Activities Association
Mr. Dickey
BENEFITS EVERY
A. H. S. STUDENT
The Activities Association is probably the
most popular organization of the school among
teachers and students-if one can judge by the
number of members who enjoy the extensive
program sponsored by the group.
Not long after school opens in the fall, the
students purchase their tickets. Why? Be-
cause, as all humans do, they like fun! For the
small sum of fifty cents, they purchase the all-
important piece of cardboard which enables
them to receive the school paperg to attend the
many special, novel assembly programs, to at-
tend athletic games at reduced rates, to take
part in friendly competition, and to purchase
the yearbook, the Horseshoe, at a small re-
duction in price. In fact, for fifty cents they re-
ceive a five-dollar value in "fun."
However, the benefits derived from mem-
bership in this organization aren't all so tangible
as those listed above. Nearly all of the students
join the Activities Association, and every mem-
ber can partake of that special "feeling of be-
longing" which means so much in school life,
it is their privilege to share in the different ac-
tivities such as class dances, the senior banquet,
and other similar pleasures which bind the
group together.
This association, under the leadership of
Earl W. Dickey, does much to link closely to-
gether the teachers and the students in a
harmonious school life. The entire school per-
sonnel can cooperate in its enjoyable, interest-
ing, and profitable program.
In the many activities promoted by the
association, as it gradually developed through
the years, many students were able to display
qualities of leadership and develop other abili-
ties.
League Gives Service
Most active among the organizations dedicated
to the interests of the girls at A. H. S. is the Girls
League. Every girl entering the school automatically
becomes a member and benefits from the services
rendered by the league.
Many interesting and varied assembly programs
are sponsored by this organization and planned by
its program committee. Programs are arranged so
that as many girls as possible may participate. In
keeping with this plan, two style shows were pre-
sented in the auditorium.
The speakers heard in assembly included Doris
Corwith of N. B. C., who spoke on the opportunities
offered in the field of radio, and Emory Nelson,
whose topic was "Boy and Girl Relationships."
An assembly program in the form of an amateur
show was given to raise money for the Girls League
scholarship fund. Every year the girls offer two
scholarships which the recipients may use for college
or other training courses.
A booklet presenting local employment oppor-
tunities was published by the vocational committee
and issued to Senior girls-a project which undoubt-
edly proved helpful to many girls.

The Home Room Representatives, under the guidance of Miss Heiss,
put our school "over the top" in many drives.
They boosted the sale of Parent-Teacher Association tickets, bring-
ing the total memberships to 2,178.
They convinced students of the importance of salvaging coupons
from various household products to contribute to the building of a green-
house for the Valley Forge General Hospital.
The Activity Ticket sale is always large, and this year the sale totaled
2,666
"Horseshoe" sales totaled 1,029 copies, and during the Victory Loan
Drive our school sold a total of 350,315.60 in bonds and stamps.
The representatives collected contributions for Red Cross and
Friendship Boxes. They sold tickets for the Girls League special pro-
grams, the band and orchestra concerts, the annual show, and other school
events.
Through the cooperation of Home Room Representatives and their
classmates and teachers, these school drives were successful.

The Latest and Best
In School News
Experienced editors plus the combined aid of all reporters
made this yearis issues of the Mountain Echo outstanding. Al-
though the Echo is still going 'round the world, the number of
copies mailed has been decreased with the return of veterans.
The Echo helps to publicize school events. Also, it follows
graduates who have entered various fields of training and the
boys in the United States Service. Sponsoring the contest for
naming the annual show was one of the privileges of the Echo
group.
Makeup, style of type, copy, and circulation methods, all
under the sponsorship of Miss Heller, are those of an up-to-date
school paper. A new column, introduced this year, was entitled
"Chatterbox," and included items not important enough for an
articleg this served as a medium for comment on brief news
items not included elsewhere in the paper. i
To conclude a year that was full of activity, the staff at-
tended the Blair County Scholastic Press Convention.

"The school is yours, do with it what
you will." This is the opening sentence
of the Compass, a handbook that is au-
thoritative and helpful and acts as a
guide for incoming students. It is pub-
lished each year and is adjusted to suit
that year's need. Thus it meets the ever-
changing conditions of the school.
The contents are invaluable. Among
the many things included are floor
plans, the proposed school calendar, the
daily schedule, a list of faculty mem-
bers, school rules and regulations, and
information about courses of study and
the extra-curricular program. All this
-in a pocket-size guide which is easily
handled.
The staff, selected by petition and
subjected to the approval of the spon-
sor Mr. Lantz, does excellentpwork for

the incoming students.
The Compass leads to better adjust-
ment for Altoona High's students and
teachers.

The smooth and efficient management of our publications is due
largely to the helpful supervision of the Board of Publications. This
organization is composed of advisers and students, representatives from
the three publications, the Compass, the Mountain Echo, and the Horse-
shoe. Mr. Dickey, the head of student activities, who presides at all
meetings, and Miss Bancroft, head of the English Department, are also
mem ers. .
The group secures and approves contracts for the publications,
establishes the budget for each one, and approves the staff members.
It aids in arranging local press conferences at which our students fre-
quently participate in programs. In the past, delegates have been sent
to meetings of the Scholastic Press Association held at Columbia Univer-
sity, but travel restrictions have made such attendance inadvisable during
the last few years. It is likely that in the future these trips will be
resumed. The board aids in the success of the Annual Show by excellent
management and promotion of the ticket sale.
For many years, near the end of the school term, the members of
the Publication Board have sponsored an annual banquet or picnic.
From time to time it has arranged for interesting speakers for the
staff groups, many of them representing famous magazines and news-
papers, such as Life magazine, the New York Herald Tribune, and the
New York Times.

Did you ever notice a tiny gold pin worn proudly
by certain members of the Horseshoe, the Mountain
Echo, and the Compass staffs? If such a pin has
aroused your curiosity, it is the official insignia of
"Quill and Scroll." Membership in this organization
has become a coveted goal of A. H. S. journalism
aspirants.
Over WFBG, the local chapter presented many
"snappy" programs Written by its members. The hustle
and bustle of arranging a program is a thrilling expe-
rience for every member . . . one never to be forgotten.
For the initiation, observed twice a year, the new
recruits are chosen from those who have done "top"
work on one of the school publications and have high
scholastic standing.
Directed by Miss Heller, the "Scriveners" have
essay, short story, and poetry contests within the
school, they also enter contests, sponsored by the in-
ternational society, which help fit them better for a
place in the World of journalism.

The talented members of the Art Display
Club, under the guidance of Miss Plitt, were
responsible for the well chosen exhibits in
the display cases and on the bulletin boards.
They depicted, with good taste and discrim-
ination, various school events, holidays, and
seasonal interests. In the selection of themes
and materials, they endeavored to develop
an appreciation of fine arts among the stu-

That's the kind of information gleaned in

The object of the club is to become familiar
with Civil Air Regulations and to learn to
read and interpret airway maps. The mem-
bers also study Aerial Navigation and plot

Bowling
"It's a strike!" shout the girls of the Al-

Alleys.
Under the guidance of Miss Eyre, inexpe-

ones attempt to excel their previous scores.
Bowling not only provides fun and exercise,
but it also aids in keeping minds and bodies
fit. This sport gives five points toward Intra-

few of the accomplishments of the members
of the Music Program Club.
Under the direction of Miss Eberle, the
girls sang both sacred and secular music.
Their specialty was the rendition of Fred
Waring's music. Besides choral work, they
featured special numbers by individuals and
by small groups. These girls were welcomed
on many programs because of their gracious
manner and pleasing harmony.

Nature Observation Club
The members of the Nature Observation
Club and their sponsor, Miss Faust, helped
to plant hemlock and walnut trees at Lake-
mont Park, the hemlocks add beauty, and
squirrels will probably compete for the
walnuts.
The club members established feeding sta-
tions to insure a plentiful supply of food for
the birds, they also encouraged the use of
conservation of plants by displaying decora-
tive arrangements for Christmas, the use of
branches of pine trees or ground pine was
discouraged.
Girl Reserves Club
This year the Girl Reserves launched a
new program. A "Putter Shop" and a club
room were equipped at the Y. W. C. A. for
the convenience of the girls. Monthly, a
"Co-Ed" party was held with the Hi-Y
members.
, The Akitt Club, one of the many special
Girl Reserves clubs, met on club days at
the high school under the direction of Miss
Louise Williamson. Each member adorned
her own sweater with blue and White nume-
rals which she, herself, made. ,
Roller Skating Club
The Skating Club, sponsored by Mr.
Morse, was composed of approximately one
hundred members. They met the first and
third Tuesdays of every month at the J affa
Mosque. Some of the members were skilled,
others were not so adept. The skating act in
the annual show was a brilliant performance.
The club members appreciated the use of
the excellent facilities offered at the Mosque
and thoroughly enjoyed the evenings set
aside for skating-evenings of wholesome
fun.
Rifle Club
Bull's eye! That's the aim of the members
of the Rifle Club of A. H. S., sponsored by
Mr. Walter Dietze. The club, composed of
the basic and graduate Clast year's mem-
bersl groups, totaled forty-five and met
every Thursday. The members shot in relays.
The club is affiliated ,iyvith the National
Riiie Association. The graduate group spent
the first part of the year in improving their
shooting for the competition in the Hearst
and Inter-Scholastic tournaments.

Squad Leaders
Giving commands, demonstrating exer-

gym tests are some of the many duties of
the Squad Leaders in the boys' gym.
These boys are picked because of their
leadership qualities and their good scholas-
tic standing. They take an active part in all
intramural sports and contests. Their con-
tribution, which helped to make this term a
successful and harmonious one in physcial
education, proved to be a profitable asset in
the gym routine.
Squad Leaders
The Squad Leaders, selected for their
quality of leadership and their ability to co-
operate, have many duties to perform. They
get the girls on the gym iloor on time, they
turn out all the lights in the locker roomsg
they call the class to order, take the roll,
assist the teacher with the gym work, care
for valuables, and record showers.
Girls especially interested in becoming
physical education teachers are given the
opportunity to lead the class.

Swimming and Water Safety Club
Blub! Blub! No, they are not drowning!
They are the members of the Swimming and
Water Safety Club-learning a new stroke.
This club is sponsored by Mr. Morse, two
able life guards assist him in training these
students.
The club met every Thursday at the Y. M.
C. A. pool. The swimmers were graded on
their basic strokes and were divided into
three classes: the first, for life saving, the
second, for diving, and the third, for im-
provement. Their motto is "Practice Makes
Perfect."
Sub-Deb Club
Girls who are interested in self-improve-
ment found the meetings of the Sub-Deb
Club profitable. These programs, sponsored
by Miss Hare and Miss Morrison, dealt with
problems of the average teen-age girl.
Mrs. Allen gave some interesting facts on
cosmetics and a demonstration of hair styles.
Miss Boyle gave details about the DuBarry
course. These are but two of the excellent
programs presented throughout the year.
One of the outstanding activities was the
recording of each girl's voice.

Tumbling Club
The Tumbling Club, under the direction of
Miss Dorothy Richards, has thirty-three
members. These girls, chosen after a series
of competitive tests, participate in the An-
nual Show and give a performance for a Girls
League Assembly.
It takes a great deal of cooperation, long
hours of hard Work, and harmonious team-
Work to achieve the breath-taking perform-
ance seen in the Annual Show, but the girls
who join this club do so for the sheer enjoy-
ment of it.
Traific Patrol
The Traffic Patrol, under the direction of
Miss Lauver, who is aided by a general cap-
tain and floor captains, keeps order in the
halls and on the stairs during the change of
classes.
The members are chosen by students al-
ready on the Patrol and are approved by the
faculty. Good scholastic grades are required
for appointment to the Traffic Patrol. The
members of this group are distinguished by
their maroon and white armbands bearing
the initials T. A. P.

Ushers Club
Among the successful innovations of this
year was an Ushers Club made up of girl
members. The change from boys to girls
was due mostly to the "man shortage."
Miss Eyre, the sponsor of the club, made
the new idea a "hit" and the girls enthu-
siastically enjoyed their varied duties. The
most important engagements of the year
were the English Department Play and the
Annual Show. This courteous and efficient
group also helped at concerts and other civic
affairs.
Girls League Executive Committee
Seven committee chairmen make up the
Executive Committee of the Girls Leagueg
this includes the four officers of the league
and three committee chairmen chosen by the
president. Each member of this group heads
one of the important league committees
which provide for the publicity, social serv-
ice work, vocational aid, art, and assembly
programs of the league.
This group not only plans the important
activities of the Girls League but also spon-
sors the majority of the clubs at A. H. S.

Messages in Music
The Altoona High School band and orchestra,
under the direction of Mr. Krivsky, have pro-
vided musical backgrounds for many school
programs and have been the source of much
enjoyment in our school and community.
The one hundred piece band aroused the en-
thusiasm of spectators at our football and bas-
ketball games and strengthened our cheering
sections. The annual band concert, which was
presented in February, featured a variety of
musical numbers, including the "United Na-
tions Rhapsodyf' "Jack and the Beanstalk,"
and the trumpet solo, "From the Shores of the
Mighty Pacific." The band also represented our
school in parades and other civic affairs and
always made a good showing.
The orchestra concert, which was given in
March, featured "Desert Song," "March of the
Toys," and other Well-liked numbers. The or-
chestra, besides playing for our school assem-
bly programs, provided the musical background
for our school plays.
Both groups were highly complimented on
their line programs.

Brass Choir
The Brass Choir was composed of boys
who were chosen fromthe members of the
band. The combination of instruments used
by the group was best adapted to playing
choral music.
With Mr. Krivsky as leader, the choir took
part in the Christmas program at Roosevelt
and played for Christmas and Easter serv-
ices in local churches, they also contributed
two excellent numbers to the band concert.
The music of the choir was much appre-
ciated both in our school and in the com-
munity.

Dance Band
The Dance Band, under the direction of
Don Shellenberger, provided enjoyment
throughout the school year. The talent of
the boys was recognized not only in A. H. S.,
but also in the city and surrounding areas
where their services were in demand.
The year's program in high school included
special numbers for assemblies and dances.
Their contribution to the Annual Show was
much appreciated.
The band had at its command a Variety
of numbers and could include "favorites"
for everybody. The "jivers" will long re-
member its harmony and swing.

Manners Antics
The dramatic productions of this year measured
up to the usual high standards maintained by the
A. H. S. dramatics department.
The annual English department play started the
season off with iiying colors, when Janie, the stage-hit,
was enjoyed by an appreciative audience which iilled
the Roosevelt auditorium to capacity.
The Christmas pageant, Miracle of the Clock, was
a beautiful and impressivei portrayal of the Nativity
scene.
A Posture Program gave a very good presentation
of the defects of all too many students. The sketch
stressed the possibilities of corrective measures for
poor posture, in an effective but entertaining manner.
Two comedies featured assembly programs, Yes
Means No, and Wild Hobby Horses. Both plays met
with the hearty approval of the student body.
The cast of Wild Hobby Horses brought honor to
A. H. S. when they presented the play at Shippensburg
State Teachers College Where nine schools gave one-
act plays. Comments and criticisms were enumerated
by a critic from Time magazine.
The last program of the year included humorous
skits produced by a "physical culture" class and by
an "elocution" class.
"Production, plus," is the motto of the members
of the dramatics group and Miss Magee, their sponsor.

Opening at home, the A. H. S. gridders faced South
High. Prosperi kicked off to open the new season.
Getting the ball on the 43-yard line, Altoona marched
57 yards for the first score. A pass fell into the hands
of Mathewson, who ran 40 yards for the second touch-
down. At the beginning of the third quarter, Prosperi's
pass was intercepted by Kostek, who made South
High's lone touchdown. Prosperi carried the ball across
from the 3-yard line. Young rushed the extra point
to make the final score 28-6.
Celebrating Pittsburgh month, the A. H. S. team
welcomed another Steeltown foe, Westinghouse. The
Electrics really tied a knot in the tail of the Mountain
Lion by handing them a 12-0 defeat. Westinghouse
kicked off, Young fumbled, and the Electrics recovered.
Lintelman then galloped 30 yards to the Altoona 7

the first score. Westinghouse kicked off
again, Prosperi went the whole length of the
field to score-but it was called back because
of a penalty. Near the end of the second
quarter Altoona threatened, but failed to
score. The second half was evenly matched
until the last quarter, when the Electrics
pushed over another score.
Celebrating Dads' day, the Maroon eleven
squeezed out a 6-0 victory over the New
Castle Hurricanes. The first half of the game
-..
was a closely contested battle and the fans
had an exciting time of it. The ball was
marched up and down the field, each team
threatening, but neither succeeding in forc-
ing it across the goal. The third quarter,
however, proved the Waterloo of the Hurri-
canes, as a blocked punt from the 9-yard line
was recovered by Guido. After a few running
plays, a pass, Mathewson to Prosperi, proved
successful. This score brought Altoona its
first WPIAL victory.

Lions toured to Latrobe. A couple tosses of
the ball, within the first five minutes of the
game, and Latrobe led, 6-0. During the first
three quarters, the ball was toted up and
down the field but neither team could score.
Altoona had to wait until the fourth quarter
to even the count. The extra point was tried
but failed - much to the regret of the
A. H. S. fans.
At Mansion Park the Altoona Lions met
the Greensburg Lions. The first score came
early in the game when Altoona marched
40 yards to score. Prosperi carried across
the extra point. The scoring was stalemated
till the last period, when Altoona led, 14-0.

Formal Introductions
Greensburg went back into punt formation,
but they passed instead-result, a touch-
down. Final score, 14-7, Altoona.
Playing host to the service clubs of Al-
toona, the Mountain Lions grabbed a 20-12
victory from the Windber Ramblers. In a
close-fought battle, Kutch and Turcovski
turned in the score. With passes and penal-
ties, both teams scored in the second period.
Altoona managed to convert, Windber did
not. Scoring once in the third quarter and
once again in the final quarter, the Maroons
put the game on ice.
The undefeated Donora Dragons ran the
Altoona lads ragged and emerged victorious
with a 34-7 victory. The magnificent line
and a speedy back led them to victory from a
Lion half, ending 7-6. In the second quarter,
Earon stole the ball from Towler and crossed
the goal for a touchdown. Prosperi converted
and A. H. S. led, 7-6! "Deacon" Towler ran
wild in the last half to score four touchdowns
and to clinch the victory for Donora.

In the final home game of the season-
and the last appearance for the seniors at
Mansion Park-the A. H. S. fans saw the
Mountain Lions decisively beat the Braddock
Tigers, 34-0. It was Altoona all the way as
they scored 20 points in the xirst quarter.
The subs played most of the game and Brad-
dock paid for the defeat they handed us last
year.
Playing the last game of the season, the
Mountain Lions toured away to meet the
Williamsport Millionaires. The field was
muddy and play during the first half was
slow, but the Millionaires forced across a
touchdown in the first quarter. In the second
half, they came back strongly and scored
two more touchdowns. The Billtown gridders
showed great power and handed the Bayites
a 19-0 defeat.
This marked the last game for twenty-one
seniors. These fellows really did a great job
and upheld the athletic standards of A. H. S.
-always coming through with a great team.

Mahaifey
Scoring in all four periods, the Little Lions took a
46-0 victory in the opener with Mahaffey. An inter-
esting thing to note is that Mahaffey is a girl-coached
team.
The A. H. S. starters quickly scored a touchdown,
Kolbenschlag crossing in the first period after a pass
interception. Meyer, substitute half-back, went over
twice in the second period. From there on the other
three strings were in and out of the game alternately,
scoring twice in the third period and once in the last.
Replogle
A couple of forward passes, perfectly executed,
produced a pair of touchdowns that led to a tie. The
two teams were evenly matched the iirst halfg and both
scores came in the second period. Wible scored for
the Little Lions. Replogle dominated the entire second
half and three times Altoona had to hold inside the
10-yard line. Replogle showed fine team Work and
good line plays. All in all it was a thrilling game and
worth anyone's time to see it. Final score, 7-7.

Bigler
After resting a week the Little Lions came back
with a bang and swamped the Bigler boys, 42-0. Scor-
ing came easy as the J. V.'s tallied in every period.
Bigler couldn't seem to get very far against any
of the four Lion teams Coach Paul Adams used. Al-
toona made six straight extra points on rushing.
Carrolltown
Winding up a very successful season, the J. V.'s
turned back a tough Carrolltown eleven, 20-0. All the
scoring came in the first half, with Wible and Beauch-
camp doing the ball toting. The result of the season
was three Wins and one tie with Replogle. Congratula-
tions are in order for Coach Adams and the Little
Lions as they finished their second undefeated season.
May they be as successful on the gridiron in 1946!

Altoona High cagers won their seventh
straight game of the season by trimming the
Mt. Union squad 35-24. The Trojans put
up a fight all the way but couldn't overcome
the A. H. S. powerhouse.
Playing to a packed gym, the A. H. S.
cagers nosed out the Williamsport Million-
aires by a score of 23-20. Altoona led the
whole way through the game, and Williams-
port came close only in the second quarter.
This game marked the eighth straight win
for Altoona.
Playing to a capacity house, the Mt.
Lions licked Hollidaysburg 36-32. The
Golden Tigers threw a scare into the Al-
toona lads by holding a 22-20 halftime lead.
Jim Wood again scored high with 11 points.
The A. H. S. cagers romped to a 40-32
victory over Huntingdon on the Roosevelt
floor. Captain Cal Kough topped the eve-
ning with seven baskets, while Wood was
close with six. All the subs played but the
scoring was done by the five regulars.

and defeated the Trojans by a score of 40-29.
In the third post-season game Altoona

The 1945 Track Season started out with
a bang at the end of March. The weather
was great and the boys got themselves in
shape for a tough season ahead.
Starting off in traditional style, the track-
sters showed real promise. In the first and
second Handicap meets, Bob Hay, Captain,
won the thousand-yard run, Clapper and
Fluke the sprints, Crozier and Debo the
hurdles, Frontz and Guido the weights, and
Mathewson the broad jump.
For their first scheduled meet the Mt.
Lions toured to Ambridge while the mile
relay team went to the Penn Relays. The
boys at Philadelphia didn't do so well be-
cause of lack of experience. At Ambridge,
although they didn't come out on top, the
Thinclads really showed their colors. Two
iirsts were taken, the most important being
the discus, which gave us permanent pos-

session of the trophy-through the good
work of Frontz, Black, and Guido. They also
took first place in the distance medley event.
Our team consisted of Hay, Boyles, Nixdorf,
and Nichol. We also took two seconds, one
third, and two fourths, which gave Altoona
third-place standing.
Next on deck came the inter-class meet
which was won by the juniors with 66 points,
the seniors were second with 22 points, and
sophomores third with 19.
A week later the Coaches' Relays were
held. The mile relay team came in first, as
did our sprinters. The shuttle hurdle team
also came in first. In field events, the discus
and shot brought first places while the jave-
lin, pole vault, broad jump, and high jump
brought second places.
In the ensuing weeks, our team competed
in two dual meets. The first one, with Wil-
hamsport, was Won by a small margin.
Williamsport took most of the first places
but Altoona led in the weight events and
managed to win by a small margin. The sec-
ond, with Bellwood, the J. V.'s won easily.
Following these dual meets was the Dis-
trict Six Meet which Altoona took in her
stride with 84 points. Outstanding perform-
ances were given by Paul Weaver, high
jump, Ray Frontz, shot and discus, and the
mile relay team. r
The boys who were district champs went
to State College for the State Meet. With
their usual fine showing, Altoona grabbed
second place honors, trailing Upper Darby.
The broad jumpers, high jumpers, hurdlers,
sprinters, and weight men all brought home
a few points.
The State Meet brought to a close the
1945 Track Season. The excellent records of
these athletes brought Altoona High to the
favorable attention of the public and brought
honor to our school. This was accomplished
under the able leadership of Coaches Bar-
tholomew, Adams, and Dinges. Our hats are
off to them.

Athletic Council

Athletic Council
Athletics in Altoona Senior High School
are supervised by the Athletic Council. This
organization not only governs major sports
but also plans a well-rounded program of
intramural sports. Under the authority of
the Board of Directors, the council meets
semi-monthly. Each head coach is invited
to meetings concerning his particular sport.
This council consists of the president
and the secretary of the school board, the
superintendent of schools, the high school
principal, three faculty members, and a
student representative. The group makes
up and approves schedules, purchases equip-
ment, arranges for games, adopts rules, and
presents awards.
Cheerleaders
Hip! Hip! Hurray ! I I .... Three rous-
ing cheers for the "Cheerleaders" who gave
their untiring efforts at pep meetings, on
the football field, and the basketball court.
They planned some spectacular features for
each game and gave a Well-rounded support
which helped to make this an eventful and
successful year.
Under the supervision of Miss Lauver,
the boys did an exceptionally good job.
Their all-out support helped our fighting
football Lions hit the line hard and carry
the pigskin over, for many a touchdown.
Their cheers encouraged the hardwood
champions to score baskets in a prolonged
season.

Miss Eyre
Director of Physical
Education for Girls
Many activities, which gave a better
understanding of cooperation and team-
work, were offered to the girls of our
High School in our intramural program
under the direction of Miss McGinnis. To
give each girl an equal opportunity to
participate in some sport, a schedule of
various athletic activities was carried on
in the gymnasium and at Mansion Park
Field. The girls were taught hockey
rules and regulations and then were shown
how to scrimmage. Many girls played and
enjoyed this active game and group teams
competed with each other.
Basketball and volleyball games
aroused enthusiasm among the girls.
Basketball participants practiced passing,
shooting, and team play, after this pre-
liminary practice, teams were chosen.
Although these teams gave stiff competi-
tion to each other, good sportsmanship
prevailed. Volleyball, which was played
in the gymnasium among classes, proved
to be very popular 3 in the tournaments
F rolic and un
For Ever one
held between the teams, about one hun-
dred iifty students participated.
Badminton and mushball ended the
sports season. These games, which at-
tracted a great many participants, were
full of thrills and excitement. The girls
played kickball in the gymnasium on rainy
or cold days but on warm sunny days
they hiked to Prospect Park and had a
much looked-forward-to mushball game.
Many other games also afforded fun and
competition.
The girl who is always "on the go,"
participating in almost everything that
comes along in the way of sports and
showing that she is really outstanding, is
presented with an award. This award,
given on a point basis, is in the form of
class numerals, but when a sufficient
number of points are won, a chenille "A"
is awarded-an emblem worn proudly on
the jacket. This year, we are proud to
say, more girls competed for their "A's"
than at any other time since this program
was organized.

lma Mater
Blow, oh gentle mountain breezes, Now the shades of night grow darker
From the golden west, Birds have gone to rest,
Breathe thy peaceful evening tidings But our colors shine the brighter I
To the A. H. S. Of the A. H. S.
Whisper to us words of pleasure, Sinking sun behind the hilltops
As the dim twilight Sighs a soft "goodnight"
Softly gathers 'round our colors, To the colors waving o'er us,
Dear Maroon and White. Dear Maroon and White.
Night has slowly crept around us,
Stars are shining bright,
Waving, oh so calm and peaceful,
Dear Maroon and White.
We shall always sing thy praises,
Work for thy success,
Hail to noble Alma Mater!
Hail to A. H. S.
