' ISTORY T Q X
MQ B
The Senior Class of 1950 had its beginnings back in
1939 when four of its members, Martin Thornburg, Bill
Dugan, Layton Arnold, and Lorna Lea McClellan, started
in the Alton Grade School Vernon Covert dropped back
a year to join the class in the sixth grade and Bob
Williams came to town from Blue Mound in his seventh
grade The students other than the ones mentioned were
Roberta Deichen, Betty King, Max Bates, Homer Grimes,
Wendell Stanfield, Dean Kurtz, Larry Hadley, Harold Lea
Morgison, and Lyle Stroup
Enrolling for high school was an event all of
eighth graders looked forward to with interest, yet
with a sense of fear No longer were we children,
were entering the adult world New Freshmen from the
country joined us Don Thornburg breezed in from Fair
West in his Chevy, Dwight Dugan blew in from Pleasant
Valley on his motor scooter, and Mart Cooley from Mount
Ayr wisely decided to stay in town fpossibly because he
feared severe weather might prevent him from attending
school if he had far to travel? Miss Brundgart was
chosen class sponsor and Larry Hadley president
the end of the year Larry and Darlene Lindgren moved to
Osborne and Peggy Britt was married
The Sophomore year began with Ben Johnston, Shirley
Mayfield, and Edna Walker attending Alton High School
for the first time They hailed from Wichita, Osborne,
and Hill City respectively Eugene Blakesly attended
part of the year, then moved to Natoma Mr Everett
Yoxall was elected class sponsor and Bob Williams pres
ident When school was out Lyle Stroup moved to Smith
Center and Barbara Kurtz to Salina
We Juniors welcomed Roberta Deichen who had spent her
Freshman and Sophomore years in Smith Center Ben John
ston finished the first semester with us and then
moved to Wichita. Edna Walker took her Junior and
Senior years together and graduated the following
spring. Mrs. Hildreth was chosen sponsor and Martin
Thornburg president. The Junior-Senior Banquet later
proved these choices invaluable.
Now, We the Seniors, stand at the threshold of grad-
uation. We have Mr. Eugene Harnish as sponsor and
Shirley Mayfield as president. Graduation characterizes
maturity and responsibilities. Some of us will further
our education, but for others this year marks the end
of our formal education. Whatever the future holds for
us, we sixteen realize we part company to fulfill our
charge with destiny. But we will always fondly remember
our classmates, our associates, and last but not least,
our Alma Mater, Alton High School.

Semor Class Poem
We are Senlors slxteen 1U number
To class occaslonally we are late,
We never study, and somet1mes slumber
But even so, we plan to graduate
For every 'wlldcat' Bob wrltes an ed1tor1al
Shlrley does the same as edltor ln chief
The behavlor of the students supplies the material
And they work together but t1ll 1t's grlef
B111 is handsome with black curly ha1r
He has eyes for a certaln JUDIOP g1rl,
Betty may be 11ttle and very fa1r
But when angry, big thlngs she can hurl
Homer's at the top when it comes to dresslng,
For a favor1te sport he likes basketball,
Thls lncludes Martln 1f he be choosing
Wh1Ch he usually 1S for he l1kes them all
Don plays football at which he's a success,
Food is h1s favorlte and girls are his hobby,
Roberta llkes to sew and has made many a dress
She has good taste and never looks dauby
Compared to the rest Dean's chubby and fat
He likes to go out for any k1nd of pastime,
Max's deslre 1S to stop the g1rls and chat
And he l1kes to skate when t1me he can flnd
Mart does the HTUISC work for our class
And he can study when he th1nks lt best
Wendell also studles and works to pass
He's S6met1meS n1ce but usually a pest
Layton relgned as our Football Klng,
He learned to love now loves to learn,
For entertalnment Wimp does the clowning,
Happy or sad he has a joke at every turn
Vernon has a smlle and hello for everyone
For h1s date Jane Dlx w1ll always rate,
Short though she may be, Lorna Lea has won
A tall dark, and handsome for her date
'N Harnish was chosen our class sponsor,
