If you hove to buy a City Sticker for your cor. Sherry Word's design will be on your cor in 1962. The second year students of the Commercial Art club ot the J. B. Johnson Center submit designs to the Mayor and he picks one to be the City Sticker for the next year. Sherrie's design was on arrowhead and the Mayor felt it wos o good choice for Alton’s 1982 motto: Spearheading Progress.'' Mayor Lenz presented Sherrie with a gold sealed certificate and a key to the city of Alton. NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARS This year Alton High is proud to have two semi finalists in the 1960 National Merit Scholar ship program. These students are the highest scoring student in the state on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT NMSQT). 52 HOSTAGES RETURN FREE AT LAST! FREE AT LAST! The U.S. Embossy in Tehran was taken over by Iranian militants on November 4. 1979. A number of Americans were released soon after the takeover, but for 52 of the hostages, the ordeal lasted 444 days. During this time, the Carter administration held numberous negotiations to release the hostages, all of which were unsuccessful. An attempt to rescue the hostages in April of 1960. ended in disaster. Finally, through the combined efforts of Deputy Secretary of State Warren Christopher and Algerian officials, the terms for the release of the hostages were settled, and on January 20. 1961. the hostages were officially released. Many Americans were upset over the way the situation was handled, yet all were glad the long nightmare was over. ’ Some people ore saying that this is the end of an era. but whot we said before still stands-the eighties will be a beautiful decade. John loved and prayed for the human race.
