The Alton Redbirds traveled to play their season opener this year. They lost a close one, 67-74 to Springfield Southeast. The next night, the Redbirds handed Granite City North a 75- 41 loss at West junior. The next week, the team pulled out a key victory over a stubborn Edwardsville team, 78-76. The Redbirds then lost, unwillingly, to Belleville West, 68-70, at Belleville. In the Carbondale Holiday Tournament, Alton lost a close game to East Moline 73-75, but went on to win the Consolation Championship. The Alton Redbirds were not as tall as teams in the past, 162 but what they lacked in size, they make up in quickness. The team used the fast break often and to their advantage to get the quick basket. Leroy Stampley was the leading scorer with an average of 24.5 points per game. Others were Gary Ieffries with 16.1 average, Bill Lyons at 10.9, Brad Scheiter at 8.7, Bob Hightower at 6.8, and Andy Hightower at 7.1. Backing the starting line-up were several fine players in- cluding Charles Love, Ioe Slack, Roger Stites, and Dave Goins. The TATLER Staff wishes Coach McPherson, Coach McAfoos, and Coach Baiter continued success in the upcoming basketball seasons.
