The 1970-71 Basketball Redbirds thus far have compiled a 10-3 record. With only three returning lettermen, the Redbirds start- ed off the season in fine style with a 5-1 record as they headed into the holiday action. The Alton cagers lost their opener to a tough East St. Louis team. We then won five in a row by downing Jacksonville, Edwardsville, Belleville, East, Wood River, and Collinsville. Although seeded fourth in the Carbondale Tournament, the Redbirds were upset by Decatur Eisenhower in the first game. Alton then went on to win the consolation bracket by defeating Harrisburg, Mt. Vernon, and Highland Park. Alton set three tournament records in the Mt. Vernon contest by scoring 94, the most points in a single game, most points in a second half, 53, and grabbing 59 rebounds, the most in a single game. After playing five games in six days, Alton ventured to Mater Dei where we were defeated. The state-ranked Belleville West Maroons were the next Alton foe. The Redbirds put out a fine effort and came up with a crucial victory. The next night we defeat- ed the state’s tenth-ranked team, the Granite City Warriors. The TATLER staff congratulates Coaches Sterrett, Miller, and McPherson on a fine start and wishes the team continued success the rest of the season and in the state tournament.
