All-State — Tim Fisk All-Metro — Bob Everage Bob Rogers All-East Side — Steve Joehl, Tim Fisk, Bob Norman, Bob Rogers, Glenn Lott, Cliff Meisenheimer, Chuck Osborne, Bob Everage. For the first time in thirty-five years, Alton finished their season undefeated and untied with a 10-0 record. The team’s performance not only led to a conference championship but brought about school spirit that hasn’t been equalled in recent Alton High history. The twenty-one returning lettermen, who last year experienced a disappointing 4-6 season as jun- iors, made use of their experience to become third in the state. The number one ranked team in the St. Louis Metropolitan area began their season by crushing the highly tauted northern school, the Vikings of Rockford Guilford 47-7. In the finale of a cross-town traditional rivalry our Big Red demolished Marquette by the score of 48-0. Because of the teacher s strike in East St. Louis, Alton’s home game with the Flyers was ruled a forfeit; Alton winning 1-0. Alton next faced perhaps its toughest foe of the year in the Granite City Warriors. Alton returned home with a 15-13 decision. The Redbirds then took their longest road trip of the year to face the eighth ranked Peoria Central Lions. In a Saturday night contest, Alton showed its finest display of school spirit when over 600 students and fans made the 3 -hour trip north in support of the team. The Redbirds rewarded their fans with a 34-21 victory despite a half-time deficit. The Big Red next had the pleasure of turning Edwardsville’s homecoming dreams into a nightmare. We shellacked the Tigers 36-13. Alton then manhandled the Belleville West Maroons for the first time in a long decade. The 28-0 victory was the second time the Maroons had been shut out in 99 games. Collinsville was Al- ton’s next victim. They had to live with the second four touchdown loss to Alton in the last two years with 42-14 drubbing. Wood River traveled to Alton for the last conference meeting between the two teams. Alton ended Wood River’s season with a 16-0 win. Last year’s number one area team also suc- cumbed to Alton’s winning ways. The Belleville East Lancers learned a disappointing 22-20 lesson in their first meeting of what should become a traditional season ending rivalry. The TATLER Staff wishes to congratulate Coaches Ed Yonkus, Ray Thorpe, Norm Iman, Leroy Beck, Pete Stavros, Felix Macias, and Ron Mclntire on a fantastic year. Copko oi Football All-District — Cliff Meisenheimer, Chuck Osborne, Bob Everage, Tim Fisk, Bob Norman, Steve Joehl, Glenn Lott, Bob Rogers.
