Presented By THE CLASS OF 1968 Alton Senior High School Alton, IllinoisOur School • • •The things we have studied in the Main Building . . . allyIn the Annex we find . . . Business ClassesAuto Safety 13SI 99s 9M Buipijng ui|o ai|l u|Auto Shop17These are memories we shall always keep. We have made many friends, developed new interests, and learned how to think. Our ideas of life have been built from what we have learned here. In this school we have acquired many skills and received the education which will help us in years to come. We are proud of our great school, Alton Senior High, which has given us the opportunity to learn, to make friends, and to prepare ourselves for our future years.ADMINISTRATION k22 DR. J. B. JOHNSON Superintendent of SchoolsDr. Johnson and the Administrative Staff at Haskell House Dr. Johnson and members of the office staff Never before in recorded history has there been a greater need for clear thinking and reasonable judgment. The future of our great country, the American way of life, and the future of all mankind depend on the attitudes, habits, character, and morals of the present-day high school students. Students should learn to examine the world around them and make a serious analysis of their actions. They should be interested in improving the environment in which they are now living and that in which they are going to live. When students are critical, they should be able to suggest a better way. Anyone can find fault, but to find an improved method requires clear thinking and mature judgment. They should be able to walk in another man's shoes before criticizing his walking. Indifference to laws and lack of respect for the home, church, community, and nation can lead to disaster. Other nations have had this experience. I sincerely hope that you plan for the next five, ten, fifteen, or twenty years, and in this planning you evaluate your contributions to the improvement of your world around you. If you contribute according to your interest and ability, I am sure the world will be a better place in which to live. If you and all the other high school students in the United States of America are willing to work toward improving our country, the future should be bright. If you shrug your shoulders and let someone else make the plans, our society may start to decay. Best wishes for success and happiness. James B. Johnson, Ed.D. Superintendent of Schools Alton, Illinois Dr. Johnson discussing the TATLER with Sandy Vieth, co-editor; David Nelson, editor-in-chief; and Marsha Theisen, Administration editor Explaining the Education System to Sandy 23Administrative Staff MR. LEAMON, Assistant Superintendent This book, the result of a cooperative effort of students and faculty advisors, dramatically displays one facet of the many outstanding capabilities of our youth. Congratulations! MR. MACY PRUITT, Administrative Assistant in charge of Junior and Senior High School Curriculum. Good will among people will increase as we are able to concede that being different is not necessarily being wrong. MR. C. R. WRIGHT, Administrative Assistant in charge of Vocational Education. An education is your only means of preparing yourself to accept responsibility in the future. 25Board Of Education MR. ROBERT S. MINSKER President During your twelve years in school, educational processes have changed rapidly and will continue to change. As increases occur in population, knowledge, and technology, substantial sociological readjustments will have to be made. All of these will affect you and your future. One of the fundamental changes in your educational program has been a broadening of the base of your knowledge. Another has placed emphasis on independent research and analysis of what is new. These innovations have given you experience in adjusting to a dynamic, moving society. The extent of the adjustments you will have to make cannot be determined at the present time. However, in the years ahead the successful men and women will be those who are able to re-educate themselves — probably several times during their lives. The basic ingredients of your education over the past twelve years have been good. We trust that you will use them to your advantage. Robert S. Minsker President Board of Education 26MR. HAROLD W. As a disciplinary action, she was sent to the Von Trapp villa to govern the Captain's seven children. Soon she found her way into the hearts of all, including the Captain. Maria and Captain Von Trapp were married, but upon returning from their honeymoon, they found that Austria had been taken over by the Nazis. Since the Captain would not comply to the wishes of the Nazi leaders, the Von Trapps were forced to flee the country. With the help of the nuns who loved her, Maria and her family escaped over the Alps to Switzerland, where freedom and happiness awaited them. An Ordinary Couple A. Jack Groppel, Marc Smith, Brien Godfrey, Bill Wicks, Lance Steinmann, Van Harden, Coach Sterrctt Last year's tennis season was a slight improvement over the previous year's. The team's final record was 6-6, as compared to 5-7 in 1966. The season got off to a rather slow start with three consecutive losses to Edwardsviile, Collinsville, and Granite City. Following this rather disappointing beginning the team narrowly defeated Wood River. This proved to be an extremely short winning streak as three more losses followed to the teams of Collinsville, Granite City, and Edwardsviile, the same teams that had caused the earlier trouble. However, our boys' showing in these three contests was much better than the first time around. The Redbirds ended their season in excellent form by defeating Belleville, Wood River, Roxana, Civic Memorial, and again, Belleville. The two wins over Belleville are ones of which to be especially proud since this team is one of the strongest in the conference. Congratulations, Coach Sterrett and team, on your performance this past season. 166 A good returnGolf The Alton High golf team, under the direction of Mr. Matthews, had an excellent season last spring. During their fine season the Red-birds accumulated ten victories, while losing only to Granite City and a strong Belleville West team. Our golfers also tied Belleville and avenged their earlier defeat to Granite City, winning by a large margin on our home course. The TATLER Staff wishes to congratulate Mr. Matthews and the golf team on their excellent performance. The Alton High baseball team played another fine season in 1967. Although not quite equaling the previous year's peak season when the Redbirds went to the State Tournament, the baseball team finished with a fine record of 14 victories, 10 defeats, and 1 tie. The season opened very promisingly with a convincing victory over Marquette, our crosstown rival. During the course of our team's tough season, our boys also won games against East St. Louis, Collinsville, Edwardsville, Western Military Academy, Jacksonville, and Roxana. However, we suffered defeat at the hands of Granite City, Wood River, Assumption, Edwardsville, and Belleville. In the district tournament, the Redbirds lost to a tough Roxana team by a narrow margin of 2-1 after defeating Wood River 7-0. Roxana went on to the state tournament after winning their regional and sectional tournaments. The sophomore baseball squad showed much promise for future years as they compiled an excellent record. As always, our teams exhibited excellent school spirit and sportsmanship both in victory and defeat. The TATLER Staff, on behalf of the student body, would like to congratulate Coaches Tyler, Macias, Yonkus, and Montague, and the entire team for their fine season. 170 Waiting in the dugoutThe push to get first It's a hit! In the past several seasons our track teams have been steadily improving. This streak continued last season as our boys ended the season with our best track record since 1964. It can be said that there existed only one team that offered the Redbirds any truly strong opposition. This team was the well-known powerhouse of East St. Louis. Our squad did, however, have an overall record of 4-4 with East St. Louis, which is quite an impressive achievement. The list of large meets won by the Redbirds is quite long. A few of these wins are as follows: the Alton Invitational which hosted twenty teams, the Mineral Area meet held in Carbondale, the Southwest Conference Relays, the Dupo Sophomore Invitational, and the District meet which this year was held in Alton. This last win, quite an enviable one, is one of which our whole school should be proud. One of the closest meets of the season took place in West Frankfort where the team was defeated by East St. Louis by a mere half point. In the Conference meet the Redbirds placed second behind East St. Louis in the field of seven teams. There were many outstanding marks set by members of the squad last season. This group of excellent performers was led by Avery Wallace, who placed second in the long jump with a mark of 23' 11%" in the State meet. Congratulations, Avery. We of the TATLER Staff wish to congratulate Mr. Wigger, Mr. Johnson, Mr. Stavros, Mr. Middleton, Mr. Brandt, and the track team on a season excellently executed. Early in the season our runners did very well, never losing a dual meet. They had victories over Beaumont, Collinsville, and Bellville West, and tied a strong Hazelwood squad. They continued their winning ways by finishing second to Kirkwood, the Missouri state champions, in a meet at Alton with ten schools. Following that, Alton's harriers took first place in the Edwardsville Invitational and fourth place at a large Peoria meet. They fell to tenth place at Mattoon and took third place in the conference behind Bellville West and Edwardsville. By finishing third in the District Meet the Alton runners failed to qualify for the state meet for the first time in nearly 20 years. The Sophomore squad's performance was promising as they were undefeated in dual meets and took first place in the Edwardsville Invitational. They also finished first in the Southwestern Conference sophomore division. The TATLER Staff thanks the boys for their efforts this past year. Coaches Wigger and Middleton deserve special recognition for their fine handling of the team. The season opened with two decisive wins over Quincy and Marquette. These two teams proved to be no match at all for our squad. This winning streak was continued at the East St. Louis contest where the Redbirds conquered "the team to beat" by twenty points. After this important accomplishment everything looked really great for our top-notch footballers. The winning momentum continued into the Granite City game which was another easy steal. Our chances of a perfect season were ended however, at the following game against St. Louis U. High. The St. Louis team fought hard to capture a mere tie. This slight setback was followed by a win over Edwardsville. Our only loss of the season came against the fired-up Belleville squad. It was evident at this point that the Southwestern Conference Championship would go either to Alton or Belleville. Our team came back from the loss with wins over Collinsville and Wood River. Belleville also won all its games until Thanksgiving day when it was defeated by East St. Louis, making Alton and Belleville the Southwestern Conference Co-Champions. Our team was rated number one in the Metro East Poll, number four in the St. Louis Metropolitan Area, and number ten in the state of Illinois. An interesting statistic is the ratio of points scored by our team to those scored by the opponents. Our squad scored 295 points to the opponents' 52. The team this year is coached by Mr. Larry Thompson. Competition begins in early December and ends the first week in March. The matches are held every Friday afternoon at the various high school rifle ranges in St. Louis. During last year's competition the team compiled a record of six wins and seven losses. Although this was less than a fifty-fifty season it was quite a desirable record for any team in its first year of organization. The Tatler Staff congratulates the rifle team members and their coach, Mr. Thompson, on their praise-worthy beginning. Rifle team members at practice. 191Our basketball team opened its season by defeating O'Fallon on its home court. The following week Mt. Vernon journeyed to Alton for what turned out to be a heartbreaking defeat for the Redbirds. The game was lost by one point after having had the opportunity in the closing seconds of the final quarter to score a game-winning two points. In the next game, the Redbirds defeated Jacksonville. The next event on the schedule was the Alton Tournament, which our team easily won. The other teams entered in the tournament besides Alton were Marquette, Civic Memorial, and Northwest of St. Louis. As the winning momentum continue to build, the Redbirds defeated both Edwardsville and Wood River by wide margins. After these two wins the team traveled to Car-bondale to participate in the Car-bondale Holiday Tournament. Our squad won its early games in the tournament easily. The championship game of the tournament was played between Alton and Collinsville. Although our team was defeated by the Kahoks in this game, the players discovered that they could give the Collinsville team a really hard battle. This discovery greatly increased the confidence of the team for the upcoming home game against the Kahoks. In the Carbondale tournament the Redbirds averaged 84.7 points per game. In the final game against Collinsville, Alton's high point man 192Huff scores two points, putting the Redbirds ahead of the Kahoks with only seconds remaining. was Sonny Willis with 32 points. Our next chance at the Kahoks proved to be the most exciting game of the season to date. Things were such that the winner of this game would also be the leader of the Southwestern Conference. The game was extremely close all the way. Nearly every point scored changed the lead from one team to the other. In the closing seconds of the final quarter with the score tied 76-76, Leon Huff scored two points to put the Redbirds ahead. Huff was fouled and made his free shot putting Alton ahead 79-76 for the final score. The stadium soon emptied onto the floor as joyful fans rushed to congratulate Coach Sterrett and his players. The game the following night against Mater Dei, an easy victory for Alton High, seemed rather dull after the tremendous victory over Collinsville. The team's record at this point is 11 wins and two losses. Congratulations, Coach Sterrett and team, on your extraordinary achievements to this point. There is no doubt that you will continue in this way and become one of the best teams in Alton's basketball history. 193Leon starts into orbit to block a shot. Yes, we're Sophomores!Editor’s Message To the 1968 Senior Class of Alton High School: The end of a trip is sometimes a happy and sometimes a sad occasion. Our 12-year excursion through the halls of education is soon coming to an end. We of the TATLER Staff hope that this climax is welcomed by you, the 1968 graduating seniors; for in it we see not the end, but the beginning of our lives. This book, we hope, will be only one of the many pleasant memories of our stay at A.H.S. I would personally like to thank the other members of the Staff for their hard work which they contributed willingly. Thanks is an inadequate expression of my gratitude for Mr. Livengood's help. As our advisor, he has guided us well when others may have faltered.
