Day Found Us Ov Pushing Actoss 'The Pit” GotiwedThm AwThe ies OfrThb PastI Conferring with Assistant Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Leamon Dr. Johnson and Mr. Bailey To: Alton High School Students I believe that it is the duty of each high school student to use his ability to the fullest extent. Business and industry will look for capable, enthusiastic graduates who have a desire to succeed. Colleges are willing to accept students who are capable of doing college work. The judgment that each student uses today will influence the decisions which he will make five, ten, fifteen, or twenty years from now. Therefore, each high school student should realize that academic or vocational achievement, attitudes, morals, manners, good citizenship, plus respect and concern for community, state, and national problems, influence not only his future, but the welfare and happiness of all other citizens. We are fortunate to live in the United States of America. We must continue to contribute to the preservation and growth of democracy and help to keep our great nation safe from the enemies which may attempt to change our American way of life. A student who wastes time, effort, and ability is not carrying the fair share of the responsibility which should rest on the shoulders of each individual. We should use the past as criteria to plan for the future. Changes in the business, social, professional, and economic world are so rapid that plans, procedures, and products which were adequate one year ago may be obsolete one year from now. Will you be ready to face tomorrow? Sincerely yours, J. B. Johnson, Ed. D. Superintendent of Schools Discussing (he Tatler 23 MR. JAMES M. CASPER MR. LEROY FRITZ MR. FRANK GIRARD MISS MERCELINE E. Work hard, be a good citizen, appreciate the position of your fellow man, use your leisure time properly, continue your education, and you will share in the joys of living. MR. MACY PRUITT, Administrative Assistant in charge of Junior and Senior High School Curriculum. It has been wisely said that criticism is but the tax that one pays for being eminent. MR. C. R. WRIGHT, Administrative Assistant in charge of Vocational Education. Our federal government has recognized the value of our human resources through education. Educational opportunities for all segments of our society have never been so great in the history of our nation. The continuing development of the skills and understanding of our people in a world of rapid and constant change is the price of continued greatness as a nation. 25BOOJub 0 AjudWttiw Our American schools furnish an opportunity unequaled in the annals of world history or in any country today. The opportunity of a free education for every individual is something that may too often be taken for granted The important factor, however, will be what you do with this opportunity you have been afforded, both now and in the future. If you have applied yourself, you have acquired the basic requisites to take your place in the affairs of the world and the necessary fundamentals to study and build on your present education and knowledge and put it to good use for the improvement of yourself, your community, and your nation. This opportunity is given to each of you equally—it is fair to say it will not be utilized by each of you equally—but those of you who diligently use the opportunity to the greatest degree will have the brightest prospect of a successful future and unlimited opportunities toward making the greatest contribution to society. My congratulations on your current achievements and finest wishes for a successful future. Robert S. Minsker President Board of Education MR. ROBERT S. CLASS MOTTO CLASS OF 1966 As a contribution to Alton Senior High School, the Class of 1966 has elected to erect a sign identifying our campus. It is hoped that this project may be financed with the present senior fund, supplemented by money-making projects this year. 44Last spring Jim Kodros was elected President of the Class of 1966. At last year’s graduation, according to Alton High School tradition, Jim accepted the cane and chain, symbols of the senior class. From the time of his election Jim has worked actively to carry out the duties of his office. His first responsibility was the organization of the 1965 Junior Prom. Since then Jim has led in the development of a class motto project, and the organization of the Senior Prom. The Tatler is proud to salute a scholar, athlete, and outstanding student, Jim Kodros, President of the Class of 1966. Okay, who glued this music to the floor? 179SPORTS 180Tu jcU The season started slowly, as usual, with losses to teams not predicted to give the Redbirds trouble. But the boys took this in stride and battled along to give Alton High School one of the most deserving track squads in recent years. Alton's thinclads did not rack up as many victories as last year’s team, but then a lot of valuable material was lost through graduation. Mr. Wigger and his coaching staff should be given special thanks for their hard work in making this Alton team a squad which will be remembered in future years. In most of the larger meets, including conference meets and relays, Alton would take a close second to East St. Louis or a third behind Lincoln (East St. Louis) and East St. Louis, respectively. However, in the state track meet East Side was blanked arrd Lincoln was beaten by Alton High. The state track meet held surprises and disappointments for Alton squad. It seemed as if our team was always getting the last lane on the track. This made it hard on the runner because on a staggered start he seemed to be ahead all of the time until the last stretch. Then it was too late to catch up with those who had passed him on the last curve. That is what happened to us in the 440 and 80 relays. Maurice Pittman had the last lane because of a bad qualifying time and was passed by Roy Houston of Evanston in the last curve. The disadvantage of that last lane popped up as Houston beat Maurice by one-tenth of a second with a time of 48.7 seconds. Our 880 team, composed of Charles Wyatt, Richard Henly, Carl Herron, and Percy Clark, came up against the same trouble and was given a third place even though the second place team, Evanston, had the same time of 1:30.8. Alton’s mile relay team, Percy Clark, Phil Dourson, Jeff Bernard, and Maurice Pittman, came in first with a time of 3:22.8, cutting 2.5 seconds off the old record. The final standings were Evanston 25, Champaign and Proviso West with 15, Alton 12, and Dunbar 11. It should be noted, also, that those boys who do not participate in the track meets regularly, get the same great training program to which the varsity team adheres. They came up With the co-championship of the Southwestern Conference, which is the first time in 13 years we have even touched first place. The season started with 7 wins and a tie. Then the roof fell in on our wonderful record. Granite City, East St. Louis, and Collinsville teamed up to give us three losses in a row, and they were all conference games. The Redbirds bounced back and threw three shutouts against Wood River, Edwardsville, and Belleville which gained back what we had earlier lost. Three games later we lost an important conference game to Bellville, but we were still in the running. The tie game, mentioned above, had to be played over to clear up the mess made by those teams battling for first place—Granite City, Belleville, and Alton. The Redbirds won that game with ease and were cochampions with Belleville and Granite. That was the closest we came to winning a championship since 1952. Boy! What a season. The district tournament held no favors for the Redbirds as Southwestern banged a couple of homers and took the game 7 to 5. This eliminated our boys from state competition. But for the work, determination, and attitude these boys gave and had, we should be very proud and grateful of the showing this Alton team of '65, co-champions of the Southwestern Conference, gave Alton Senior High School. The boys played very good tennis this year. They ended up 9-4 in the conference, which rated them third, behind Belleville and Edwardsville. The district meet held a third place for the Redbirds after a rousing comeback. Tom Sherwood and Ron Selkirk qualified for the State Tennis Meet but were bested in competition by Decatur McArthur, the eventual state champions. 192 SSi “» Moruhan' John McLagan, Tom Sherwood, Bruce Steinman, Steve Jianakoplis. I wO; Mr. Sterrett, Dick Skiff, Ron Selkirk, Ron Blaine, Larry Prather, Terry Lyon, Kevin Schwartz.Mr. Matthews and the boys should be given high recommendation for their fine showing this past season. In the conference meet, Alton came in third place behind Belleville and Collinsville, respectively. During the regular season the team had the best showing when they tied Belleville on Belleville’s own course. At the district meet the Redbirds swung their way t6 the final playoff, but lost to a tough Lebanon squad. There are no standings kept in the conference for golf, but according to perfect informers, the players, the Alton team would have ended up second in the conference behind Belleville. 193Fotiball Shobe and Armstrong make the stop Gruver bulls his way forward Chiolero snags the ball On the sidelines195 The defense moves inQm L CjbwdbMiss Pam Ferguson Miss Sandy Patterson Miss Judy Bailey Miss Carolyn Newman Miss Sandy Stobbs Miss Darlene Watts 197Homecoming Pages Diane Johnson and Evelyn Luster CtoAMtiiOiv Congratulations, Mary The Homecoming Coronation was held as part of the pre-game ceremonies before the Redbirds took on the Edwardsville Tigers. This season we had 7 home games and only 3 away games. The team ended the season with a record of four wins, five losses, and one tie. In our first game with Quincy, the Blue Devils worked in one touchdown to win the game. We won our second game over the Marquette Explorers with several fine runs by Bob Gruver and a TD pass to Wayne Schroeder. The third and fourth games to East St. Louis and Granite City were lost by wide margins. East St. Louis went on to take the Southwestern Conference title. The next game with MacArthur of Decatur ended in a solid tie. We won the sixth and eighth games from Edwards-ville and Collinsville with a loss to Belleville in between. Edwardsville was our homecoming game. The next-to-last game was probably the upset of the year for the Redbirds, as we took advantage of Wood River mistakes for a surprising victory. Our last game was lost to St. Louis U. High as the Juniors Bills took advantage of an early touchdown to beat us by 6 points. An interesting fact of our 1965 football stand is the total point ratio. We scored 139 points total to our opponents’ 155. This year's varsity coaching staff deserves quite a bit of praise for the record they compiled this year. Our coaches are: Mr. Yonkus, head coach: Mr. Johnson, offensive line coach; Mr. Brandt, defensive line coach; Mr. Stavros and Mr. Macias, sophomore coaches; and Mr. Tanner and Mr. Buddell, assistant coaches. Special praise ought to be given Mr. Yonkus for his excellent guidance of the team, and for the record he compiled in this his freshman year at Alton High. Because of this, the Redbirds met tough opposition from the top Missouri teams, which hindered our team’s winning ways in the beginning of the season. But, as time progressed, we became the stumbling block for those teams and tied for first place with McClure, one of Missouri’s finest teams, in the tremendous Beaumont Invitational Cross Country Meet. In the past five years that Mr. Wigger has been coaching here, the Redbirds have won the conference championship. This year, the sixth, was no exception. Alton battled off Belleville’s rally and defeated the other teams in the conference. The cross country team, having won the district crown, too, earned a trip to the state cross country finals. Our harriers have made this trip fifteen straight times, since the sport began here in 1951. A field of contestants, one of the toughest groups of teams ever assembled, met in Champaign, Illinois, for the twentieth annual Illinois High School State Cross Country Meet. Our Redbirds placed seventeenth in the race, with Belleville placing eighteenth. This season was one of the most thrilling accounts of a determined comeback to be found in recent years. After a slow beginning, our Alton Redbirds gave us a team of which to be proud. Vernon, two non-conference opponents. But the next weekend brought disaster. Both East St. Louis and Jacksonville used the Red-birds’ ineffective foul line shooting for two Alton losses. Tournament season arrived; with its arrival Alton took a second place to Edwardsville in the Edwards-ville Tournament by beating CBC in the opener and losing to Edwardsville in the final game. After the tournament games, we returned to the regular season by thumping Wood River by a large margin. Granite City couldn’t miss and handed us a surprising defeat. In the second annual Carbondale Tournament, Alton beat Marion, a team which ranks highly in the state, by playing one of its best games. The Redbirds met Olney in the second game and were upended by Olney’s spirited efforts. Conference play started again, but it provided no silver linings for the Redbirds. Belleville and Collinsville matched offensive efforts two successive nights to hand Alton two blistering defeats. The team came back against Edwardsville with some spirited action. But the Tiger’s new gym seemed to put a lid on the basket for the Redbirds, and Edwardsville came out a winner. As it now stands, Alton High’s Redbirds are 1-5 in the conference and 5-8 overall.Campbell and Mitchell double team on opposing center The Redbirds score again 207Wailing for the reboundLast quarter strategy Fighting for the reboundJunior Vfcws j ROW ONE: Tim Guinnee, Bill Honchell, Sonny Willis, Lee Hardimon, Wayne Schroeder, Gary Breuchaud, Ron Lewis, Tom Pcndt. The new I.B.M. installation, pictured above, is the unit record equipment used by Alton Senior High School in the performance of the various duties of student accounting. The principle function of this mechanism is the scheduling of students’ programs. This task includes production of the eight-card enrollment replacement report and a master census of student schedules. This mechanical mind also issues student report cards and computes the monthly attendance (if each pupil. Much time and effort on the part of both teachers and students is saved by this equipment, utilized for the first time this year. 304 iy -r % • • •; . «i 11. 5 % •«i • •• •:i‘ 'Itl n •s I V V .'
