PRESENTED BV THE CLASS OP ’64 Alton Senior High School Alton, Illinois I DR. J. B. JOHNSON, Superintendent of Schools 2 «C Af4f When students plan for the future, they should look forward ten, fifteen, or twenty years from now. They should plan for both the present and the future. Before they set their goals, they should ask the following questions: 1. What do I want to do? 2. What am I capable of doing? 3. Will I be happy in my chosen field of endeavor? 4. Will I be willing to meet the educational re- quirements which are necessary for success? 5. Will I contribute something to my community, state, and nation? 6. Will my work or profession be accepted in the community as something worthwhile? 7. Will I be able to plan for an income during the years when I am too old to work ? Best wishes for the future, J. B. Johnson, Ed.D. Superintendent of Schools Alton Community Unit School District No. 11 3 AWMfSTRATlVt SlAFF MISS MAXINE MR. JAMES M. CASPER MR. LEROY FRITZ STEVENSON Director of Audio Visual Edu- Director of Music and School- Director of Libraries. cation. Community Relations. MISS MARY E. SIDWELL Director of Home Economics and Lunch Service. MR. DON KEIL School Engineer. MISS ELSIE KOHLMAN Director of Nursing. MR. LLOYD NORMAN Director of Special Education. MR. RAYMOND READY Administrative Assistant in charge of Elementary Curri- culum. MR. DEAN TAYLOR Director of Counseling and Guidance. MISS BERNICE WILLIAMSON Director of Art. MR. PEARL WOODS Head Custodian. 4 MR. E. M. LEAMON, Assistant Superintendent To anyone seeking a good education, learning for the sake of learning, joy in the discovery of something new, and the ability to separate the important from the unimportant are goals to be reached. These goals are attained only by someone who applies his greatest effort and ability to whatever he wishes to attain, losing sight never of the qualities of tolerance and regard for the rights of others.” MR. MACY PRUITT, Administrative Assistant in charge of Junior and Senior High School Curriculum. Two thousand years ago the Great Teacher taught a parable about the use of talents. He said that unused talents decrease, while used talents increase. The lesson is as timely today as when it was given. The most tragic waste in our nation results from ' underperforming.’ We owe our best to our school, our parents, and, most of all, to ourselves.” MR. C. R. WRIGHT, Administrative Assistant in charge of Vocational Education. We in vocational education find ourselves confronted with a chang- ing public image which demands study and change in concepts of all educational needs.” In our present society an individual finds it necessary to become educated and develop a marketable skill that will be of use in pro- curing gainful employment.” BOARD OF EDUCATION MR. ROBERT S. MINSKER President A1 •) % 1 ! i m 1 ■ ( r u - c MR. HAROLD DAVIDSON Secretary DR. DAVID E. BEAR MR. GEORGE A. CHANDLER 6 MR. WALTER B. MILLER MR. J. EDWIN SUNDERLAND MR. W. H. THOMAS 7 MR. G. C. DAVIS, Principal In an era in which individuals are being replaced by machines, the big question is — what becomes of the in- dividual ? The pressures of our time are unfavorable to the develop- ment of the individual. The age of automation, the influ- ential role of mass media, and our increasing population have given impetus to the national drift toward conformity. Creative individuality must be nourished in a society which now depends for its survival on creativity and intellectual rather than on physical prowess. In a world of conflicting national aspirations, of heightening demand for a more equitable distribution of the world’s goods, of new vistas revealed by space and atomic research— in such an era, intellectual and creative individuality is vital. What must we do to have a superb country? Let us educate a generation of imaginative and creative individuals; let us honor imagination and creativity; but at the same time, let us reaffirm high moral values. Then our country can take care of itself. G. C. Davis, Principal FACULTY MRS. IRMA ALLEN Counselor; B.S., Culver-Stock- ton College; M.A., Washing- ton University. Sponsor, National Honor So- ciety. The Tatler holds memories of the many wonderful activities that took place during this school year — danc- ing at the Prom, taking part in the plays, cheering at the games, and laughing with friends. As you look through these pages, remember that the events are symbolic — some Alton High student was there, and it could have been you. FOREWORD V f V -V- ' c, ' .v 1 V 4 i y ifc. V ‘ V-na ' .; V v ? Same to you, buddy, and a little more of it. 99 U ' L ABNER At Alton Hi tih Li I Abner Staged Oil Professional Level By HM KCI f and BOB RYFKEI. Telegraph Staff Writers There were some in the au- dience at the opening perfor- mance of Alton High School ' s production of Li ' l Abner Friday night who weren ' t expecting very much, but who came away at the end amazed that high school students could put on such a show. From start to finish, the show- had a professional quality, and in its slick changes of scene showed a strong directorial hand. Voices were incredibly good, costumes were bright and imaginative and a smooth job was done on the scenery and lighting. Vigor of Youth There was not one muffed line or missed cue and the whole show was shot through with the freshness and vigor of youth, which probably gave it more sparkle than a profession- al production. Some of the au- dience were heard to say that the students ' work Friday was as good as anything they ' d seen on the legitimate stage — believe it or not. It would be hard to point to a particularly outstanding per- formance. because all the char- acters were well done. As the hero, David Voracek. had the proper freshness and eojintrv bumpkin about him that Li ' l Abner should have. As Daisy Mae, Jane Fichtel — besides being cute as a button — had a surprisingly beautiful voice. Choreography was exception- all good, as was the chorus in the big, rousing, choral num- bers such as “Jubilation T. Cornpone. As Marryin ' Sam, and Earthquake McGoon, Jim McConathy and George Camp- bell were hilarious. As Pappy Yokum and Mammy Yokum, Dale Bower and Linda Moore knocked themselves out. At times the orchestra was too brassy in spots and drowned out some of the lines instead of emphasizing them, but on the w-hole the hilarious show- was a tight job of teamwork. Local Humor They even threw in some local humor. At one point when a character brought out Stupe- fyin ' Jones CBobbi Norris) in hopes she would be “necessary ' ' enough to save Dogpateh from atom bombing, he said: “She’d be invaluable at football games. She ' d stop East St. Louis on the-- one yard line! Another time, when General Bullmoose (Jerry Smith t was singing “Progress is the Root of All Evil. he intoned: “Oh, bring back the good old days — of Orville Hodge! There w-ere bits of innovation, too. During the Sadie Hawkins Day race, the stage was dark- ened and some sort of lighting gadget w-as used to give a flick- ering effect that made the char- acters run jerkily as though in a silent movie. And some Sadie Hawkins Day runners came right down into the aisles. It was the first musical Al- ton High School ever put on and we certainly hope it won ' t be the last. Because of the large crowd Friday night, another perfor- mance. in addition to the show this evening, will be held at 8 p.m. Monday. Like he said, my name ' s Daisy Mae. That’s Be cftmnosite story of how, Alton High School ' s determined track team broke the monopoly of Chi cay a a schools on a Saturday afternoon at the State Track Meet at Champaign. Now Alton has accornplishe flsonBthing that no other |chool has been able to do in the 69 years of the meet. Since 1925, northern schools have dominated the meet. Knowing they were favored, the Redbirds performed in clutch style. Even the shoulder dislocation of George Hunt and Danny Gantz’s broken leg failed to stop their determination. There were 12 of them who qualified for the finals. Not all scored, of course, but those who failed to earn points in the finals were just as important to the morale and calm attitude of the team as those who were responsible for the winning total of 23 points. Twenty minutes after the final running events started, Alton had gained 13 points! Press box wags had the title sex ed up, but one couldn’t convince even the most loyal fans of the Redbirds that the team had it in the bag that early. He missed the first two tries. On the third attempt he cleared it. Thl bar was raised to 6-3. Swift missed his first two tries. A total of 77 teams competed in this meet. A total of 36 competed in class A with the Alton Redbirds. The relays were the Redbirds forte as they garnered 22 of their 37 points. The Redbirds won the sprint medley relay, the eight-lap relay and gained a fifth place in the four lap relay. In the eight-lap relay, Keenan, Gantz, Leroy Johnson, and Hunt raced to a winning time of 3:02.7, 1.1 second off the track record. The sprint medley (392-196-196-784 yds.) composed of Gantz, Tom Keenan, Mitchell, and George Hunt broke the tape at 3:10.5. Just one second over the record. The four-lap relay was perhaps the closest of the track events. Nine teams finished with times under 1:25. Proviso East was the winner with a 1:23.3 mark while the Redbird quartet of Keenan, L. Johnson, Mitchell, and A. Johnson picked up two points for fifth place finishing 1.3 seconds off the winning pace. Andrew Johnson, Alton’s 1962 low hurdle state champion as a sophomore, took the low hurdles with a time of 7.1, two tenths of a second off the track record. Robert Hubbard of Chicago Crane Tech., Indiana State champion in the low hurdles in 1962, passed up the opportunity to run against Johnson and entered the 60 yd. dash and high hurdles, which he won with a mark of 7.5 seconds. Again Andrew Johnson, one of Alton’s point getters, rated a third in the 50 yd. dash. The event was won with a mark of :05.5 seconds. Paul Economides picked up the only Alton points in the field events, tossing the shot 55 feet 11 inches to edge Brian Oldfield of Elgin by one fourth of an inch for the trophy. The Oak Park Relays is the world’s largest indoor high school meet of its kind. Coach Jim Wigger of the Redbirds was mighty pleased with the performance of the team and is looking forward to next year. Although it was early in the track season, this was a big step toward the state crown. The Tatler Staff salutes you for a job well done. Leroy hurdles way ahead. BASEBALL The baseball season of the Redbirds didn ' t look too promising as the Wood River bats crushed Alton with seven runs and ten hits in a Southwestern Conference baseball contest. Wood River wasted no time in the first inning in which two runners scored on a booming triple. The Oilers added a run in the fourth on a pair of walks and a run producing single. Alton got its first run across in the top of the fourth on a pair of walks and a run producing single. Alton got its first run across in the top of the fifth and added another on a single by Jim Minsker in the sixth, but Wood River, exploded for three runs in its half of the inning to put the contest out of reach. Alton received another setback as Granite City bunched four runs in the first two innings. The Redbirds had a chance in the third to score. With Baiter on second and Jones on third, Mike Wyatt slammed a ball towards the third baseman, but the ball hit Baiter for an automatic out. The Redbirds came back with a win over Western on a balk. The Redbirds of Alton, scoring single runs in every odd inning, edged Western Military Academy 5-4 in nine innings of a non-conference contest. Len Jacobs started for Alton, Tom Jones relieved him in the fourth and Bob Jones pitched the sixth through ninth to record the victory. The Redbirds broke the ties in the bottom of the ninth without a hit. Denny Wooff watched and stole second. Then, with one down and runners on second and third following another walk and a stolen base, Alton scored in National League fashion. Harper committed a balk and Wooff came home with the winning tally. Again, Alton High rallied with an 8-4 Eagle setback. The Redbirds came up with four runs in the sixth inning to down the Civic Memorial Eagles, 8-4 in a non-conference baseball game. The score was tied 4-all when the Redbirds escaped for four runs. Tom Jones hurled the win for Alton, but had to have some help from Len Jacobs in the sixth. Jones gave up all five Civic Memorial hits, struck out four and walked two. Jacobs walked none. Extra base hits were plentiful in the game. Don Harvey hit a homer for Alton in the fourth with none on. The last contest of the season for the Redbirds was a poor one on the Birds’ part. Collinsville scored twice in each of the first two innings to beat the Redbirds, 4-1. Tom Jones pitched the first two innings for Alton and gave way to Len Jacobs in the third inning. Jones was touched for all four Kahok runs, gave up four hits, struck out none, and walked four. Jacobs allowed one hit, struck out three and walked none. After taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning, Collinsville scored twice more in the second. Alton scored its only run in the fourth. Denny Wooff singled, stole second and third, and came home on the front end of a double steal with Julius Brooks. The Tatler Staff, as well as the entire Alton High School, honors the team and the fine coaches for a job well done. The Alton High School Redbirds kicked off the 1963 Football Season with the Quincy Blue Devils. The stubborn Redbirds defeated the Blue Devils 14-13 at the Public School Stadium in Alton. Trailing by a 7-6 deficit at halftime, Alton High roused itself in the second half to coast to a 26-7 decision over courageous Marquette. It was the ninth straight victory over the Explorers. The Explorers outplayed the Redbirds in the first half, but in the second half Alton came out of the locker room a different team. Gwillim completed six of eight passes for 107 yards and two touchdowns to favorite receiver, Dirk Ehlert. East St. Louis was the falling down place of the Redbirds. Losing 14-7 at half, the Redbirds couldn ' t get off the ground the last two quarters and remained on the short end of a 33-7 win. It wasn ' t the same team the following week when the rejuvenated Redbirds hit the unhappy Warriors of Granite City. What the Redbirds were unable to do before, they did against Granite City. Alton gained 307 yards on the ground and 50 yards, in the air for a grand total of 357 yards. The 127 total yardage of the Warriors couldn’t compare with that of the Redbirds. This was a different team. It blocked better, tackled harder, and ran with the best of them. Alton overpowered the Warriors for a 40-0 win. This superiority lingered for another week and enabled the Birds to upset the Generals of Decatur 19-13. The next week Alton ran into Stonewall Edwardsville. The Red- birds couldn’t sustain a drive as the Tigers walked off the field with a 13-6 Southwestern Conference victory. The Belleville Mafoons clipped the wings of the Alton High School Redbirds and walked away with a 19-7 victory over the Birds. Alton High School had trouble with Collinsville but the Johnson boys, Andrew and Leroy, saved the Redbirds from embarrassment as they ■ !i iwned the stubborn Kahoks 20-6. The Wood River Oiler squad used its ' ' shot gun” and almost brought ' own a flock of Redbirds. It all happened at Memorial Stadium as the avily favored Alton Redbirds eked out a 25-19 win over Wood River in the final Southwestern Conference game for both teams. Andrew for 89, Andrew again for 77, and Leroy for 71. Thats what happened in the first quarter as the two Johnsons sparked the Alton High School Redbirds to a devastating 41-14 triumph over Hannibal in the season closer for the Birds. The show me school will travel to Alton for the final contest next year. Thank you, Coach Johnson and Coach McClain, for a sparkling season. Where did he go ? The many smiles of Mister Wonderful. The Redbirds won the 27-team Peoria Invitational and finished second in the 33-team Beaumont Invitational. The varsity took second in the Edwardsville Invitational with the sophomores win- ning their divison. The team went to Champaign for the state meet after winning the 7-team con- ference meet and the 17-team district meet. At Champaign the Redbirds finished tenth. This was better than any other team outside of the Chicago area. Sixteen boys, more than in any other year, earned letters. They have shown themselves to have one of the toughest offenses in the area. The Birds opened their cage season with a 85-52 triumph over Christian Brothers College of Quincy. The Redbirds then returned home to beat Mt. Vernon 91-70. In this game Darrell McGibany seemingly could not miss, scoring 35 points. Alton lost a thriller in a 67-59 struggle with East St. Louis the 6th of December. They then travelled to Jacksonville, beating them 72-59- At Edwardsville the Birds came out ahead with a 76-70 victory. In the Oiler-Red- bird contest the Alton team out played Wood River to a 72-55 victory. When the Mater Dei team came to town the Redbirds were ready, beating them in a 75-60 contest. In one of the thrillers this season the Birds played host to a tough Collinsville Kahok team. The team put up a good fight, coming from behind to tie the score at the half. In the second half, however, the Redbirds couldn’t withstand the superior height of the Collinsville team, losing 73-86. The following night the Redbirds, still slightly down from the Collinsville defeat, journeyed to Belleville. There the generally excellent offense of the Birds was not functioning and they lost 56-70. The Redbirds beat Champaign in a 46-45 thriller. Alton ' s fate was decided as a last second shot by Champaign hit the rim, teetered, and fell out. GOLF The Redbirds again had a successful season losing only twice in twelve dual meets and one triangular meet. The Redbirds in the course of their season defeated both Marquette and Lebanon twice. They split their two encounters with the Collingsville team by winning 6-1 and losing 3-2. With Belleville, the only other team to beat the Birds, Alton also split a contest. The Alton High team downed Wood River, Assumption, and Western Military in dual meets. In their lone triangular meet, the Redbirds defeated both Wood River and Assumption again. In the Quincy Invitational, the Redbirds finished eighth in a strong field. The long hitting Alton team was second only to Belleville in the Con- ference Meet at Belleville. They ended the season with a 4-8 record which is very good for their first year in the conference. The Redbirds beat Western Military twice 3-2 and 4-1, but lost to Belleville 5-0 and 5-0. The Birds split with Collinsville, losing 3-2 and winning 4-1. The Birds lost to Edwardsville 4-1 and 3-2. Representing the 1964 Tatler, I would like to thank the students and faculty of Alton High School for making this yearbook possible. After all, this book was written about you. You are the ones who laughed, smiled, achieved, lost, cried, and sighed during 1964, and also the ones who will do the same again as you read this book a few years from now. You may forget a few experiences, but we hope that as long as there is a Tatler, there will be a chance to reminisce. The Tatler does not put itself together, however; this is the job of the staff. My thanks go to the entire staff for accomplishing this feat so well. In be- half of the staff, I would especially like to thank the man who has taken blame for our mistakes, when he should have been receiving credit for his successes. This man is Mr. Dale Livengood, our advisor, without whom there would be no Tatler. Dave Webb Editor-in-Chief 1964 Tatler The students of Alton High School wish to express their appreciation to the advertisers who have helped to make the publication of the 1964 Tatler possible.
