The first public school in Alton was founded
in 1837 on the site of the present Lincoln
School. In the past l20 years, the public school
program has grown to include 56 buildings,
serving 9,900 pupils from kindergarten
through grade l2.
Our school community has increased material-
ly since 1947. This expansion and increase
has been clue to several factors: C ll increased
revenue through increased taxes. C25 new
leadership on the Board of Education, and I 35
new leadership in the administration.
Since l945 six special school elections have
been held and all six were carried by large
As a result of these special elections it is
reasonable to assume that the people are
interested in good schools for our community
and that they have confidence in the ability
and integrity of the members of the Board of
Education. We wish to thank this Board for
their efforts in our behalf.
