The Dramatic Club was founded in 1923 for the purpose of learning how to act and the backstage work of lighting, gathering props, prompting, putting on make-up, and building the set. One three act play is presented each semester, and everyone in the club participates in some Way or an- other. , Tryouts are held once a yearg and the candidates are chosen by Mr. Clif- ford Davenport, the club sponsor, and the club members.

George Mendelsohn, Steve Mottaz, David Handler, Ierome Lacey, Don Crabb. Our Service Clubs Girls' Council, for the first time this year was open to all those inter- ested in joining. It is a service organ- ization, sponsored by Miss Teter. The council meets the second and fourth Mondays of every month. Some of the projects this year were selling beanies and stationery and entertain- ing new girls from out of town, The members of the Boys' Cabinet sell soda, candy, and popcorn at the basketball games, take tickets at school events, and assist at football games. To get this done, Mr. Iureziz, the sponsor, is often seen recruiting "Vol- unteers". 63

Row 2: Sterling Webb, Gaynell Green, Iudy Shackelford, Spencer Gibbins, lean Pensinger, Wayland Iones, Alice Waterhouse, Carol Pierson, Don Chadwick. In 1932, Thespian Troup 126 of the National Thespian Society was started at Alton High. This year the organization is celebrating its 25th an- niversary: and a summer banquet, with all former members in attendance, is being planned. An induction ceremony is held twice a year, when new mem- bers are taken into the Society. A banquet is also held at that time, and the Best Thespian is announced. Miss Rutledge is faculty advisor of the troupe. 65
