Good Coaching After serving one year as junior varsity coach, Mr. Hanks stepped into the varsity position. Coach Hanks brought with him a fine record of the previous season. After coaching the up and coming varsity players, he was better equipped to serve as the varsity coach. In his first season, Mr. Hanks has retained the basketball rank of the school by Winning the Pontiac Tournament and the Hillsboro Tourn- ament. Under his direction, the Red- birds were able to finish third in one of the State's toughest conferences. Mr. Hanks is a good example of the fine coaching staff of Alton High. Row 2: Alfred Connors, Nor- man Lohr, Merle Graves, Ed Pierce, Virgil Alexander. Cross-Country They've done it again! Alton's harriers have established a record to be proud of. Not satisfied by winning the Southwestern Conference Title and the District Meet, they went to the State Cross-Country Meet and won fifth place. Charles Glaeser finished seventh, and Ronnie Dunbar took eighth place. Under the able leadership of Coach Schmelzel, the Redbirds turned in one of the best performances of the past three years. The prospects for next season are very good. One senior will be sorely missed. Charles Glaeser, one of the mainstays of last season, will be remembered as an outstanding and hard-working team member, Track Last season's track squad was made up of sophomores and juniors. Only a few senior lettermen returned. Lack of experienced runners greatly hampered the squad's chances. The Redbirds were strongest in the distance events with milers Charles Kidwell, Tom Monical, and Ronnie Dunbar. Lack of experience, especially in the short runs, proved to be too much to overcome. This season the squad appears to be of much better quality. There are many promising sophomores, and last year's members will be much the bet- ter for experience. The team is under the direction of Coaches Posey and McClain.
