Vasity Football For the past several years, Alton l'ligh's football teams have been of a mediocre quality. The 1956 season, however, as it was presented by the Redbirds, was one of the best in ten years. The Redbirds finished the seaa son with a 6-3 record. ln the opening performance the Redbirds dropped Marquette 19-0 in the second game of the new series. Following this, the Redbirds downed McKinley of St. Louis 12-7. The first road game found Quincy a belligerent host as they topped the Redbirds 13-6 in a hard fought contest. The annual Homecoming classic was celebrated in style as the Redf birds defeated Wood River 19fO. Their winnings ways, however, were stopped cold in the next game by Collinsville, one of the best teams in the conference, who rolled over the Redbirds 19-7. Then the Redbirds started a new streak of three wins as they downed Granite City 20-6, Edwardsville 7-O, and Belleville 26-13, The final game matched the Red- birds against a powerful East St. Louis team. With a chance to tie for the conference title, the Redbirds were un- able to hold back the Flyers and were downed 26-6. The 1956 season was indeed wel- comed by the victory-hungry student body. Returning next year will be a fine nucleus for the Varsity squad. After completing the season with a 6-3 record, the Redbirds were able to place six players on the All-District Team. Named to the first offensive squad were Bob Diaz - Senior Tackle, Harold Wittman - Iunior Tackle, Danny Weeks - Senior Halfback, and Don Watkins - Iunior Fullback. Two Redbirds from the fine defensive platoon placed on the defensive squad. They were Bob Iansen - Sen- ior Halfback, and Gilbert Moody - Senior Half- back. Bob Davis Bob Diaz Two other boys received honors because of their playing. Bob Diaz and Danny Weeks were named Co-Captains of the 1956 squad by their team-mates. Bob, a three-year letterf man, was an outstanding lineman and all- round player. Danny, also a three-year letterf man, has been the pillar of the back-field and is regarded as one of the best backs in the area. The 1956 season certainly was one of the best of the last decade.
