For the past several years, Alton
l'ligh's football teams have been of a
mediocre quality. The 1956 season,
however, as it was presented by the
Redbirds, was one of the best in ten
years. The Redbirds finished the seaa
son with a 6-3 record.
ln the opening performance the
Redbirds dropped Marquette 19-0 in
the second game of the new series.
Following this, the Redbirds downed
McKinley of St. Louis 12-7. The first
road game found Quincy a belligerent
host as they topped the Redbirds 13-6
in a hard fought contest.
The annual Homecoming classic
was celebrated in style as the Redf
birds defeated Wood River 19fO. Their
winnings ways, however, were stopped
cold in the next game by Collinsville,
one of the best teams in the conference,
who rolled over the Redbirds 19-7.
Then the Redbirds started a new
streak of three wins as they downed
Granite City 20-6, Edwardsville 7-O,
and Belleville 26-13,
The final game matched the Red-
birds against a powerful East St. Louis
team. With a chance to tie for the
conference title, the Redbirds were un-
able to hold back the Flyers and were
The 1956 season was indeed wel-
comed by the victory-hungry student
body. Returning next year will be a
fine nucleus for the Varsity squad.
