Our New Student Council Officers IACK STAUFFER, Vice-President and HARRY GAGHEN, President This spring the junior class nominated the following candidates for student council officers for 1948-49: Harry Gaghen, lack Stauffer, Dorothy lean Elfgen, Carl Mayer, Viola Neuhaus, and Marlene Tate, After a spirited and well-organized campaign, Harry Gaghen and lack Stauffer emerged as President and Vice-President, respectively.

The Mardi Gras of 1948 The king, Nick Bavas, sits on the throne with his chosen queen, Marry Tchoukaleff. That sure is a mighty sad clown sitting before them. Some ofthe Crowd gathered around in small groups uneoneerned about their ridiculous costumes. Lower left: "Happy" Metzger and "Smiley" Gelzinnis made excellent clowns and were dressed appropriate to the occasion. A new face was seen this year on the Redbird oval. lt belonged to Pete Stavros, the new track coach. Coach Stavros proved that he was well qualified for this position bv running boys who were in tip-top condition. His chief aim throughout the season was to train personally each boy in the event or events for which the boy was best suited. Returning veterans who set the pace for the younger inexperienced athletes this year were: Oliver Rose, Carl Mayer, and Roy Oller in the dashes: Evan Dean in the 880: Charles Conley in the mile: and Bob Becker whose specialty was the hurdles. It was up to these boys to help Coach Stavros field a winning squad. The Redbirds had a fine schedule this past season of ten meets. They were as following: April 8, at Edwardsville: April 17. at Granite: April 21, at Edwardsville: April 24, Conference Relays at Belleville: April 29, at Roxana: May l, at Dupo: May 4, at Wood River: May 8, District at Granite: May 17. County Meet at Rox- ana: and May 22. Conference Meet at Granite. J D
