We dedicate our Memorial Board
The Alton High School pays tribute to the glorious living and dead soldiers, who have left these
halls not so very many years ago to accept tasks of heroic proportions as simply as they once accepted
their daily assignmentsfwho have gone out into the unknown, wherever duty has called them,
on the land, in the air, on the sea, to give even their last full measure of devotion, if need be, for
a cause in which they put their trust: to preserve a democratic way of life which they had been taught
to love in this high school-to preserve, not only for themselves but for all of us, a free country,
dedicated to the task of securing liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all of its citizens.
"We have a job to do," they said, proudly. "We're the only ones who can do it," they added,
their eyes shining. "We won't be back until it's done."
Since their going, there has been no faltering, no turning back, only firm resolve and steadfast
purpose to complete the job which they have so gallantly undertaken. The school pays tribute to
their simple courage, their devotion to the call ofduty, and their supreme sacrifices, in some instances,
for some of our boys and girls will never come back in body, but transfigured by our memories into
something greater than we knew them, they will come back as they have come back today. In our
memories we see them as we saw them when they were high school boys and girlsibut greater.
To us they will always be young and heroic. Our memories of them will ever glow with a sacrificial
liht, for to us they have shown a great love, the greatest of all love-they have laid down their
lives for us.
What tribute can we pay them for this? Our words are inadequate and empty, except as they
make us remember them as we are remembering them now.
From "A Teacher's Tribute" by Miss Lauretta Paul
