NINETEEN FORTY-FOUR This Has Been A War Year.. . This year has been a war year, crowded with events and war news unlike any year that we have ever before experienced. We have participated in many war activities such as buying stamps and bonds every Tuesday and collecting paper every Friday. In the fall we accounted for $59,438.50 on one jeep drive alone. The girls have knitted afghans, studied home nursing, and made menu covers for the Junior Red Cross. Over one half of our student body has been employed in war industries and stores in Alton, helping to ease the manpower shortage. The seventeen and eight- een year old boys who sat next to us in our classes seemed to quietly disappear either to the recruiting offices or into the services after a draft list was published, and some weeks later they came back to visit in uniform. The seriousness of war comes home to us when we see members of our families off to war, and now we are beginning to see casualty lists with familiar names on them . . . casualty lists that are just beginning to come in, and which are forerunners of much larger ones to come. Yes — this has been a war year, and we the student body of Alton High School have tried to meet the challenge.
