NINETEEN FORTY-FOUR This Has Been A War Year.. . This year has been a war year, crowded with events and war news unlike any year that we have ever before experienced. We have participated in many war activities such as buying stamps and bonds every Tuesday and collecting paper every Friday. In the fall we accounted for $59,438.50 on one jeep drive alone. The girls have knitted afghans, studied home nursing, and made menu covers for the Junior Red Cross. Over one half of our student body has been employed in war industries and stores in Alton, helping to ease the manpower shortage. The seventeen and eight- een year old boys who sat next to us in our classes seemed to quietly disappear either to the recruiting offices or into the services after a draft list was published, and some weeks later they came back to visit in uniform. The seriousness of war comes home to us when we see members of our families off to war, and now we are beginning to see casualty lists with familiar names on them . . . casualty lists that are just beginning to come in, and which are forerunners of much larger ones to come. Yes — this has been a war year, and we the student body of Alton High School have tried to meet the challenge. OUR ADMINISTRATION IN OUR CLASSROOMS AND FROM OUR TEACHERS WE HAVE LEARNED THE VALUE OF TRUE LEADERSHIP ADMINISTRATION PARMER L. EWING Superintendent of Schools Mr. Ewing is completing his second year as chief administrator of the Alton Schools. We are appreciative of Mr. Ewing’s interest and cooperation in all of our undertakings. BERTRAND L. SMITH Assistant Superintendent Mr. Smith, our new curriculum advisor, has made many friends in our high school during his first year at Alton. BOARD OF EDUCATION Standing: L. J. Misegades, Dr. H. E. Middleton, M. W. Acker, J. J. Beeby, Walter W. Wood. Seated: P. L. Ewing, Superintendent, R. H. Richards, Presi- dent, Hugh Horstman, Secretary. C. C. HANNA Principal OUR PRINCIPALS It is with great pride that we point to the manner in which Mr. Hanna has guided our school through this war year. The courage and tact that he has shown in solving the many problems brought to our school by the war have gained our highest admiration. As Assistant Principal, Mr. Kober has taken over much of the responsibility of routine work in the office such as program cards and absence reports. He has done a fine job of this, and we are proud of him. RALPH KOBER Assistant Principal OUR DEANS Our Dean of Girls is admired by all for her charming personality and her sympathetic understanding. The girls of Alton High School are indeed fortunate to have the guidance of such a capable person as Miss Huebner in solving their many problems. ' ' MARGUERITE HUEBNER Dean of Girls Mr. Pruitt is successfully completing his second year as Dean of Boys at Alton High School. He certainly deserves much credit for the efficient way that he has handled difficult situations that always arise during any war year. OUR ATHLETICS THE MUSCLE BUILDING TRAINING RECEIVED FROM HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS HAS FITTED US FOR THIS GREATER GAME CALLED WAR The Athletic Season 1943-1944 Alton enjoyed a very successful athletic season in spite of many war-time restrictions. The Army took all of the eighteen year olds, and a number of the seventeen year olds enlisted, so there were not so many boys available for teams as there usually are. But Mr. Jackson with his usual skill built a football team that won seven of the nine games played. Alton won third place in the southwestern conference and finished the season by defeating Western 33-0. In basketball the record of our victories is not quite so impressive. But Coach Ingles built a fighting team that always gave a good account of itself. In spite of war-time restrictions on tires and gasoline, our games were very well attended. They played hard and won several of their games. Since their games were held at 7:00 o ' clock, they didn’t have much of a crowd, but those people who did go saw a hard fighting, fast jSlaying team in action. There is much good material here for our teams next year. SECOND TEAM Back row: Neal Petit, Wayne Snell, Eldon Hensen, Gene Ursch, Orville Combs, Leroy Chappell. Front roiv: Jim Mann, Bob McGhee, Howard Eichen, Frank Dunphy. “Hank” Tackvvcll and Leroy Chappell Harvey Veit and “Red Schumacher Hold it! Jimmy Youngberg Manager Jim Schotters and Joe Naughton Tom Beall and Bob Astroth “Otie” Keener and Don Graul FOOTBALL SUMMARY Starting this year’s football season with eight returning letter-men, the Hilltoppers trounced Benld in their first game 14-0. The aerial attack used in the Wood River game proved too much for the Oilers, our next op- ponents. The first defeat of the season came at the hands of East Side, this year’s conference champs. The Belleville Maroons, in a hotly contested game, handed us our only other defeat. During the remainder of the season, the team was given no serious threats. Collins- ville and Granite City were held scoreless by the line, while Moore’s passing and Beall’s plunging piled up the score. With the regu- lars” playing half a quarter, Madison got only one touchdown while we collected forty- three points. While Beall and Jansen starred for Alton, Edwardsville failed to score in the last conference game. On Thanksgiving after- noon Alton trampled the Cadets for the thir- teenth consecutive year, ending the season in glory. ★ BASKETBALL SUMMARY The average for the basketball team of ’43-44 showed a very marked improvement over the team of last year. The season started with Alton dropping the first game to Roxana 33-31- Alton led in the first three quarters but was beaten out in the last quarter to lose by two points. The next game, however, turned the tide for the Birds, and they smothered Jerseyville 54-26. The steamroller continued to roll over Madison, Belleville, and Gillespie but came to an abrupt halt when it encountered East St. Louis. The East Siders held the Hilltoppers with 28 points while they racked up 42. The following night Alton made a fine comeback to trim the Granite City Warriors 35-32. The next three contests, which were against Wood River, Edwardsville, and Collinsville, were lost by the Redbirds. Roxana was the next team to oppose Alton, and, contrary to their first meeting, this proved a defeat for the Shells. Alton picked up another game when they topped Madison 32-28. The Redbirds nosed out the Warriors in the next game by a score of 31-30, the point being made by Jim Schotters on a foul shot after the final gun sou nded. In the next session Edwardsville topped Alton 37-22, and then Wood River did the same by a score of 47-40. The final game of the season brought Alton to face Collinsville, who was in first place and who, after defeating the Redbirds, 45-30 took the Conference crown. Alton finished the season with 5 conference victories and 9 defeats. SCHOOL AND UPTOWN Ring around the rosy What say, Joanie? Oh, those hay rides! “Hey, I said watch the birdie!” Aww! Today, the Alton Plant of the Owens-Illinois Glass Company is the largest plant of its kind in the world. It produces more glass containers than any other plant in existence, and the great majority of these containers are used for food and drugs. Glass has always been the favored container for drugs and is fast becoming prominent in the food packaging field. As high school students, you are looking ahead to the future, wondering what it will hold. You will see new industries, new products, and out of confidence based on facts, we predict that one of these products of the future will be the glass con- tainer. Owens-Illinois makes the famous Duratjas container — the product of scientific manufacture for a combination of convenience, economy, strength, and dependability. This is why the ‘‘trend to glass” makes the future even brighter. We are proud of what Owens-Illinois represents in this community, proud too, of its working conditions, group insurance, retirement income, suggestion awards, health and safety programs. Owens-Illinois feels that it as a company of individuals and you as an individual have much in common. We, like you, are looking ahead. OWENS-ILLINOIS GLASS CO. Perhaps this volume should not go to press without a word of appreciation to some of the people who have made it possible. To Travis Streeper who served as our photographer and to Bill Sonntag and Bill Dick who made our informal photo- graphs around school, goes much of the credit for the success of this book. The two-color division pages were printed from linoleum blocks cut by Erwin Hebner. The cartoons on the cover design and the end sheets were designed by Eleanor Middleton. To the editorial staff consisting of Dorothy Stockdale, Emma Buttle, Winifred Jennings and Betty Wilkey go appreciation for the actual writing of the book. No Annual is possible without financial backing and so perhaps our greatest thanks go to our business manager Charles Otstot, who persuaded the business men to advertise with us. Jim Koenig was an excellent circulation manager. And last, but not least, we want to express our appreciation to our faculty advisor, Miss Williamson, without whose help, our book would not have been possible.
