Edwardsville Tigers were all set to go places in the conference this year and owned some nice wins when the Redbirds journeyed there for the third game of the season. Using the L'airways" in the third quarter, Wood, Schwartz, Redmond, Lazar and McCaskill tossed, passed over, around and past Edwardsville so effectively that the Tigers had to eat L'crow" while McCaskill took the touchdown pass for what proved to be the victory. Late in the fourth quarter the Tigers drove to the Alton 3 yard line but Stallings and Moore played a hand in giving Alton the ball. Stallings replaced Schreiber at right end when Bob was injured in this game. Jim never gave up his line position during the remainder of the year. A Redbird victory 6fO. Wood River brought a good and heavy team to Alton and at least 1200 fans. Secret practice sessions for a week had the Oilers at their best. They were all set to stop Schwartz as a pass receiver. So-the Alton lightfweights played straight football on the ground. Near the end of the lirst quarter McCaskill caught the "coffin corner" and the ball went out of bounds on the Ciler 1 yard line. Joe Astroth punted to the 29 but Alton carried the ball to the 2 yard line as the quarter ended. Two plays in quarter 2 netted an Alton touchdown by McCaskill. In the fourth quarter Lazar recovered an Oiler fumble. He shot an unexpected pass to Schwartz on our Hrst play that was stopped on the 11 yard line. Lazar
