National Honor Society
Under the sponsorship of Miss Cates the
Alton Chapter of the National Honor Society,
an organization similar to the Phi Beta Kappa of
universities and colleges, has been in existence
for 13 years.
The purpose of the society is to create an
enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire
to render service, to promote worthy leadership,
and to encourage development of character in
the students of Alton High,

Cnly fifteen per cent of the 4fl class who
rank in the upper third and who have been
rated in leadership, service, and character by the
faculty are eligible for membership.
The society meets regularly once a month to
transact business or to hear a speaker invited by
the club. It also inducts new members at the
end of each semester and engages in one social affair

Le Cercle Francais
Le Cercle Francais was organized in the early
years of our high school in order to promote and
encourage interest in the French language, culture
and the French people.
Some of the activities of the organization this
year were to sell refreshments at the football
games, to entertain with a party for the Latin
and German Clubs and to participate in the
annual Language Club Banquet.
