Just as Althoff is not just a beautiful, sprawling build¬ ing, not just 1082 students and 56 teachers, not just victorious athletic teams, talented musical groups- but the essence, the vitality, the warmth, the intangible, living heart of all these—so a yearbook is like a magic mirror, capturing, holding, and reflecting forever the vibrant force and personality which was our school year. A yearbook is people-and people are laughter, tears, cheers, taunts, quick-silver dreams, cynicism which seeks solitude to cry, studies, goofing off. People- people growing up-but growing hurts! And a yearbook is events-proms, music, dates and lack of dates. Football games won and celebrated, football games lost with tired senior players walking silently together for a last look at the lengthening shadows on a now-empty stadium, turning quickly away with unbidden tears. A yearbook is life—a year of life-a year lived- a year now gone—and the promise of all the years that are to come. West 20 In " 66 " the Frosh gridders under Mentor Jack Gagen compiled and honorable 5-3-1 record. The Freshmen started in championship style, winning their first five in a row. In their sixth game of the season the young crusaders fought a tough defensive battle tieing with Augustinian Academy. In the final three games of the season the Frosh, against the toughest competition in the area, bowed in three defeats. According to Mr. Gagen these three games could have gone in any direction with a few breaks. With our young crusaders we look for a good future in Althoff football. A.C.H.S. 1966-67 BASKETBALL Through the unending drive and work of Mr. Jerry Koeh¬ ler, Varsity Coach, this years team singled itself out as the best in the area. Using the Crusaders superior defen¬ sive tactics and offensive maneuvers the varsity produced an outstanding 20-3 record. Losing only to such powers as Quincy, Madison, and Assumption, the Crusaders bounced back to exceptionally good form. The tremendous players and fans at A.C.H.S. produced a team superior to any at A.C.H.S. We look forward to a future as success¬ ful as this one. We look around and ask -where did it go? We worked, we played -but for four years? Then we look the other way -into tomorrow. Suddenly we ' re not so tall as we thought we were And not so smart. But we find that somehow We learned a decisive lesson at Althoff something we wouldn ' t have had without the Priests and Sisters, without God or religion -a direction into that uncertain tomorrow. It can never be so dark again Though the world may change and the times change and we change. 204 »«»
