Included in this group of fifteen were six letter men from last year’s squad. After several weeks of practice, the Colonels opened their schedule and played excellent ball through- out a twenty-game schedule. With such stars as Smithers, Laughon, Bennett, Downs, and Barbee composing the first team, our boys seemed almost invincible. At the close of the season, we realized a good record in high school the fact that we had won a large percentage of our games circles. 9 CiRESeBASKRELBALRE HazeL CRAWFORD ST) ee bce We ee Captain ELIZABETH OWEN . ; : ; ; : : ‘ : F Manager Miss BaAILey : ; : , : : : ; ‘ : ; Coach Forwards: Guards: Hazel Crawford Mazie Downs Martha Qualls Clara’ Prekrel Rosa Belle Lane Annie Bel Williams Jeannette Pickrel Elizabeth Tribble Beatrice Shelton Eunice Tinnin Geraldine Johnson Hazel Parker Connie Shelton During the 1939-40 season, Altavista High School was the proud possessor of its greatest girl’s basketball team in nearly a decade. Hazel Crawford, as captain, proved to be an excellent leader, especially when competition was greatest. The team has our respect and admiration for its never ceasing spirit to win and its good sportsmanship.

GIRLS’ SOFTBALL The organization of a girls’ softball squad at A. H. S. has proved to be an excellent plan, since the boys have three major sports while the girls have had only one hereto- fore. This organization gives the girls a chance to engage in sports approximately six months out of the nine school months. A great deal of interest is shown by the girls and it is hoped that the experiment will prove so successful that in the future softball will become a major sport here. The picture on this page is of the 1939 Squad. Players are: Nellie Grey, Jeannette Pickrel, Elizabeth Owen, Virginia Blackwell, Geraldine Johnson, Rosa Belle Lane, Clara Pickrel, Annie Bel Williams, Martha Qualls, Virginia Jeter, Inez Crouch, Naomi Trent, Fuchsia Burgess, Elizabeth Tribble, Sybil Reynolds, Mazie Downs, Linda Yeatts, Alma Stowers, Boots Bralley, Frances Mathews, Dearing Fauntleroy, Virginia Shelton, Rachel Andrews, Derothy Lowman, Charlotte Thompson, Rebecca Smith, Eunice Tinnin, Ann Wilburn.
