JS Walle WC: At the conclusion of the 1938 athletic season, Coach Tomko resigned as athletic director of Altavista High School to become coach and teacher of agriculture at Brookneal High School. After this movement, there remained a task at Altavista of contacting a new coach to continue the excellent activities carried on in the field of sports. Recommendations pointed as far north as New Jersey. The answer was George McIntosh, a quiet Scotchman, who, undoubtedly, possessed the necessary qualifications for which the negotiators searched. Mr. McIntosh first attended Panzer College of Physical Education from 1932 through 1935. During this time, he won varsity letters in basketball, soccer, and track. He then transferred to Randolph-Macon College where he blazed a trail of glory in the athletic and student activities fields. He graduated in 1937. The girls of Altavista High are fortunate in having as their sports director Miss Mary Bailey of Richmond, Virginia, formerly of Arkansas and Texas. She attended Arkansas State College from 1935 to 1938. She transferred to Madison College for her Senior year, graduating there in 1939. While in school, Miss Bailey minored in physical education. She also won her college letters in the field of sports. During the past year we enjoyed an excellent athletic campaign in all fields, and we sincerely hope that the fine sportsmanship and the motto of “Win, but win fairly,” will forever be remembered by our opponents. —— F. G. ENGLISH.
