Our community influences the lives of all the
students. During school hours some students par-
ticipate in a commercial on-the-job experience.
After school these and other students are seen
rushing to work.

Our school and our churches work hand in
hand in molding well-balanced individuals who are
capable of assuming responsible positions in the
community.
We are provided with inspirational guidance
in our Sunday School, Church, Thursday night
choir practice, and the meetings of our Youth
Groups.
Family life is an important part of our day.
Our parents do more than feed and clothe us. They
console us in our problems and congratulate us in
our triumphs. A happy home is the basis of our
security.

In preparing for a well-adjusted life, we must
learn to share household tasks. We help by caring
for our clothing, by shining up the car, by washing
dishes, plus other jobs. Being able to do these
things is rewarding in many ways.
Also important in our day are our associations
with others. We look forward to the evenings spent
with friends or that "certain person." Parties,
dances, and other school activities play a big part
in our recreation. Curfew always seems to come
too soon!

DEDICATION
We, the graduating class of 1957, would like
to show our appreciation to Nels Berndt, our custo-
dian.
Mr. Berndt has been a custodian at the Alta
school for 20 years. He began working at our school
in 1937. Since our kindergarten days he has shown
us his good humor and has helped us considerably.
Throughout the years Nels has made the build-
ing a clean healthy place for the students to work.
Whenever he had some spare time Nels would try
to fill the requests of helping for the banquet, thc
class play, or even making stands for the Christ-
mas trees.
In appreciation of a job well done, we dedicate
our 1957 Cyclone to Nels Berndt.

There are thirty-one freshmen, nineteen boys
and twelve girls.
Out of four subjects there are only two that
the boys and girls have together. These are math
and general science.
Being our first year in high school we found
many things to get accustomed to. Such as, musical
events and school activities.
We also tossed in a lot of fun by attending
school parties and working on our float, which got
fourth.
The sophomores also gave us a hayride which
everyone enjoyed. In return we had to give the
sophomores a party.
Freshmen are offered a variety of subjects in-
cluding agriculture, industrial arts, home econom-
ics, general math, and general science.
The girls who take home economics have a
wide range of interesting and educational work to
do and learn. They have learned the art of cook-
ing breakfasts and luncheons. They also took up
sewing by making themselves aprons and gathered
skirts. They brought flowers to school and then
learned how to arrange them most effectively. At
Christmas time the high school Christmas tree was
trimmed by the girls. A party was given by the
freshmen girls for the kindergarten class with a
circus theme. To broaden their knowledge even
further they were allowed to take agriculture for
a Week. They learned different carpentry, pound-
ing nails and affixing hinges. They learned live-
stock feeding and the difference between the dif-
ferent types and breeds. Also a short course was
given on the basic wiring.
The vocational subjects offered to the boys
are industrial arts and agriculture. The boys tak-
ing shop are building cabinets, gun racks, and
small tables.
The agriculture boys are repairing machinery
and building different farm equipment items which
include, loader chutes, self feeders, and feed bunks.
The boys also took a week of home economics
where they learned how to sew, judging the qual-
ity of clothes, getting along with others - espe-
cially girls, and the last day they made ice cream
and brownies and served it to the girls.
Janice Huseman, Jacqueline Gustafson, Connie Haaoen,
Gaylen Hinkeldey, Terry Minard
One of the teachers of the freshman class is
Mr. Delbert McCoy. He was born in Terril, Iowa,
November 1, 1932. He has four sisters and three
brothers. He considers his home town to be Clark-
field, Minnesota. After graduation from high school
he attended St. Olaf College, Northfield, Min-
nesota, graduating in 1954. He then spent two years
in the armyg first at Fort Bliss, Texas, and then
at Fort Sam Houston. After this training he was
sent to France where he spent 17 months. He was
discharged on August 3, 1956 and began teaching
tere at Alia in the fall of 1956.

Imagine yourself spending a day in Alta High
School. You would find it quite easy to find a
Sophomore either in or around school.
The Sophomores spend their class time in
English, World History, Biology, Algebra, and
Home Economics. The Agriculture class is inside
except for an occasional field trip. The drivers
education classes are inside when learning the
rules and outside to learn how to drive and to get
the actual practice. Physical education classes are
held outside in spring and fall and are in the gym
during winter months.
Extra curricular activities also have a share
of the Sophomores time. There are Sophomores
participating in all music activities, vocal and in-
strumental. FFA, FHA, GAA, and Scarlet and
Black Staff are other organizations in which
Sophomores take part as active members and of-
ficers.
Parties are not a forgotten part of the Soph-
omore class. During the year the Sophomores
sponsored dances after football and basketball
games. The Freshman-Sophomore party is held
twice each year and each class sponsors it once.

The Junior Class meeting is in full swing. The
topic of conversation is the Junior-Senior Banquet
which will be held this spring. This year the load
of carrying out a theme and all preparations for
the banquet will fall on them.
Back in a corner a few Juniors are reminiscing
about what they have done this year. There was
their float for Homecoming which took first place.
Even before that was the day when they sprang
their class colors, blue and white. Later the play
cast was chosen and the nights were filled with
play practices. All too soon the play was given and
forgotten about, except by the Juniors. How could
they forget "Professor, How Could You"
At football and basketball games the Juniors
operated a concession stand. The money made from
this is used to pay expenses incurred from the ban-
quet.
Helping the Juniors with all these activities
is one of their sponsors, Mr. Fuller. Besides help-
ing the Juniors he teaches Shorthand, Office Prac-
tice, Typing, Bookkeeping, and Law. All these keep
Mr. Fuller busy, but he still finds time to supervise
the annual.
Mr. Fuller attended Iowa State Teachers Col-
lege at Cedar Falls. While there he majored in

SENIORS VISIT OMAHA ON SKIP DAY
Thirty-six sleepy eyed Seniors tried to find
their way to the bus in front of the school on the
morning of May 8, 1957. They were on their long
journey to Omaha by 5:00 A.M. Upon reaching
the half-way point at Denison they stopped for a
much needed stretch.
They arrived at their destination about 8:45
A.M. The first thing on their agenda for the day
was a visit to the Union Pacific Railroad Museum.
The museum contained many relics of Abraham
Lincoln. After the visit to the museum, the rest
of the morning was spent at their leisure, shopping
and riding the escalators. A fine noon meal was
served for them at the Brandeis Department
Store. After lunch they left for the Joslyn Memo-
i . Q pn. Rua, 'J :vnu

rial Art Museum. First they saw the beautiful
Egyptian fountain in the center of the reception
room. The museum afforded them many memora-
ble happenings and even a few laughs. Their next
stop was Boys' Town, which the girls especially
enjoyed. They were taken on a tour of the Trade
Building, the Field House, and the church where
Father Flannigan was laid to rest. From the bus
they saw the rest of the buildings of Boys' Town.
Their last stop was Omaha Municipal Airport.
While 16 of the more daring Seniors had the pleas-
ure and thrill of riding in an airplane, the rest
watched the big United and Braniff passenger
planes take off and land.
About 7:00 P.M. the tired Seniors and their
sponsor, Mr. Hammond, boarded the bus for the
long journey home. A stop for supper was made
at Missouri Valley. To pass the time some of the
boys played cards, while others told spook stories
and tried to keep warm by using paper as a blan-
ket. Around 11 P.M. Alta was sighted, and more
memories had been added to the Seniors already
full treasure box.

ALTA COOPERATIVE ELEVATOR
Preparation for the annual began in June
at the State University of Iowa. Here a Pub-
lications Conference was held. It was attend-
ed by Sanclra Braley and Deanna Brechwald,
our editor.
When school started our Co-editors. Busi-
ness Manager, and Section Heads were
chosen. After this we began work which in-
cluded: selling advertisements, selling an-
nuals, taking annual pictures and selling
them, and the hard work of planning the an-
nual.
Help in planning the annual was given
at the Year Book Clinic in Storm Lake. This
conference was attended by Mary Ann Jen-
sen, Deanna Brechwald, Dennis Brechwald,
Larry Peterson, Carol Radke, and Mr. Fuller.
Laying out the annual was next. This
meant long hours and hard work. As some
of the staff members, who have worked from
7130 in the morning until 6:30, know very
well. There were also night meetings in which
we worked.
This year we had Junior editors who will
take over next year. Thev are: Robert Kind-
wall, Roger Peterson, Judy Brown, Kathryn
Sievert, Lynette Mordick and Jane Dreier.
Through the efforts of the 41 members
of the Annual Staff and Mr. Fuller the all-
" nual was finally completed,

VALENTINE PARTY
FHA Days, FHA Conventions, Style Shows, Installation of Of
ficers, Mother and Daughter Teas, Membership Drives. Picnics
for 8th Grade girls, Skating Parties, and of course the individ-
ual business meetings.
All ol these things have been done this last year. Their
success is credited to Miss Kundel, our advisor. Miss Kundel
is a 1956 graduate of Iowa State College of Ames.
This year we also had a represntative at National
Convention in Chicago. This was Jacque Otto, who brought
back many helpful ideas for our club.
Mary Louise Otto was elected the first President of our
district. She along with our new president and vice-president,
Jacque Otto and Sandra Svendsen, attended State FHA Con-
vention at Ames.
Our Chapter also entertained the Newell girls, who
are starting a new chapter in their school.
We are looking forward to even greater accomplish-
ments next year.

The Alta Chapter of the Future Farmers of
America has had a busy year.
In October, the Chapter cooperated with the
Commercial Club in sponsoring the Halloween
Party. At the party, the FFA set up a Carnival
which consisted of two ball throwing stands.
We have a chapter gilt on contract with Jerry
Mills and plan to put out another one.
We have rented six acres of farm land from
Barney Kindwall and plan to raise corn on it. The
farm is set up under a farm manager plan. Ralph
Watts is farm manager with James Otto and Bur-
ton Johnson as his assistants.
4'-
The Commercial Club has asked our Chapter
to assist them in erecting a new welcome sign at
the edge of Alta.
Pictured on this page are sime of our members
and their productive projects. They also have im-
provement and supplementary farm practices.
We initiated seven Freshmen
into our Chapter.
In contest and judging work
very well. At Spencer we placed
forty-four teams. As Correctionville
out of fourteen teams and our hog and sheep teams
topped their division. At the sub-district speaking
contest we won first in Public Speaking and Ex-
temporaneous Speaking, second in Parliamentary
Procedure, and third in Creed Speaking.
Earlier in the fall we toured the Sioux City
stockyards, packing plant, and other points of
interest.
Our Agriculture teacher, Marvin Polzien. is a
1956 graduate of Iowa State College, Ames, Iowa.
Mr. Polzien has served his country as a mem-
ber of the Army M.P. Corps, He spent most of his
time in Korea.
Lake View, Iowa is his home town but now
he resides at 517 W. Highway in Alta.
Mr. Polzien teaches Agriculture I and Agri-
culture II, He also has Adult Farmer and Young
Farmer classes at night. ,

The Close of a Perfect Evening
The Juniors of the Alta high school were hosts
and hostesses to the Seniors at the Junior-Senior
Banquet on April 21, 1956, at 7 p.m.
The entrance was composed of Mickey Mouse
and Donald Duck displaying the banner entitled,
"Garden of Fantasy."
The coat check was made up or latticed blue
and white streamers, with an arched doorway en-
twined with pink and red carnations.
The side sections of the south wall depicted a
storybook theme from Disneyland. The characters
shown were Uncle Scroogeg Donald Ducky Grand-
ma Duckg Daisy Ducky Huey, Dewey and Louieg
Mickey and Minnie Mouseg Pluto, and Lady and
the Tramp.
The animated section displayed the scene of
Minnie talking to Goofy in front of a little cottage.
Uncle Scrooge, Grandma Duck, the three nephews,
and Pluto by his dog house were spectators to the
scene.
A sloping grass hill led to the stage. "Welcome
Seniors" was spelled out in colored carnations on
the green slope. A stairway, bordered by rocks and
flowers cut through the center of the hill and led
to the stage. A statue of Donald Duck at the top of
the steps resembeled a master of ceremonies. A
white fence entwined with colored flowers bordered
the stage. The ceiling was of French Blue and
Light Blue streamers.
The punch stand was decorated as an old stone
wishing well, complete with the old oaken bucket.
The north wall continued to carry out the
storybook theme of Disneyland. Horace Horsecol-
lar, Donald Duck, the three nephews, Pluto and the
two little pups and Goofy thumbing a ride were all
traveling the winding road to Fantasyland Castle.
The west wall was a beautiful forest scene
including green trees, a waterfall and colorful
mountains. Many forest animals, a mountain pool
and lovely flower beds completed the scene.
Dumbo, the flying elephant, winked gayly at
the guests from his perch high on the west wall of
the gym.
The center of attraction was a beautiful blue
and white fountain in the center of the dance floor.
Out of the high stone center flowed showers of
sparkling blue water.
The waiters and waitresses wore costumes re-
sembling those of Peter Pang green shirts, yellow
pants, and bright colored hats with a feather in
them. These waiters and waitresses served the ban-
quet dinner and acted as hosts and hostesses at the
open house held on Saturday and Sunday after-
noons.
The music for the evening of dancing was fur-
nished by Jimmy Smith and his orchestra. At inter-
mission, a 'minstrel show was presented by sixteen
freshmen students A very enjoyable evening came
to a close at 11:45.

April 13 was the night. Six-thirty was the
time. The gym was the place. "Rhythm at Ran-
dom" was the theme. These all made up the start
of the 1957 Junior-Senior Banquet.
The gym was decorated to carry out the
theme. The stage was a scene from the "Gay Nine-
ties." In the corner looking on was a policeman.
Sipping sodas was a couple sitting at a table.
Along the back of the stage was the bar and the
bartender busily shining the glasses. On the wall
hung two old-fashioned pictures.
Down the south side were three scenes depict-
ing music. The first was "Childrens Lullabys"
with a scene from "Hansel and Gretel," then the
scene "Golden Hymns." The scene was set in roll-
ing fields with an altar in front with the words
"The Lord is My Shepherd." and following this
This
ories Are Made of
scene was "Rock 'n Roll." A familiar character, Elvis Presley, was placed there
amidst instruments used in Rock 'n Roll bands.
The front of the coat check was made to look like a sheet of music. As every-
one came in the door they stepped on a keyboard.
The west side depicted a t'Winter Wonderland" scene in a city park. There was
a park bench, the snow, a policeman and a couple. A snowman stood under one of
the trees with his top hat gayly perched upon his head and a rabbit was at his feet.
Along the north wall were small paintings for "Music Through the Years."
Starting this refrain of music was 1774 and "The Beggars Opera" to which George
Washington might have danced. About a century later, in 1884, it was "Wagon
Wheels" and moving westward. In 1917 we were engaged in World War I which
brings up "Over There." In thc
roaring twenties "The Charles-
ton" symbolized the music. So on
down the years to the present
age and the Rock 'n Roll craze
and "Party Doll."
The punch stand was cleverly
hidden in a juke box. In the cen-
ter of the gym was "The Money
Tree." Angel hair made the tree
glisten as a spotlight shone on it.
The waiters and waitresses
wore costumes of the Gay Nineties.
At eleven-thirty dancing was
over and the gym soon became
deserted except for the memo-
ries which lingered on.

PROFESSOR, HOW COULD YOU!
Men usually thought Vicky's pranks were cute, but Professor
Perry curtly ordered Vicky to call and apologize or drop his course.
Vicky, against her will, sulkily obeyed. Professor Perry has been of-
fered a deanship if he can get a Wife. John offers his secretary, a
curly-headed little minx who can't spell but would make a ideal
wife! Grandma's candidate is Tootsie Bean, a bit plump, but a mas-
terhand with lemon chiffon pie. Valerie, a Southern charmer who
'makes a fool out of every man she meets, is Vicky's candidate.
Grandpa won't tell the name of his candidate. Convulsing scenes
follow: All of the girls appear for dinner. Grandpa makes each one
think the Professor has proposed an elopment, and they all appear,
ready for the dash to matrimony! There is plenty of comedy as the
irate girls face each other - especially when, to save the situation,
John dresses as a woman and comes weeping in, trailing three chil-
dren after him and passing himself off as the Professors long-lost "
Wife! In a whirlwind finish, Grandpa's candidate wins, and the
Professor finds a Wife in the little spitfire Vicky!

COME OUT OF THE CLOSET
Three girls from Ohio W- eager, excited and hoping to establish
careers in New York -f are compelled by circumstances to rent an
old, gloomy, run-down apartment from a tigerishly greedy landlady
on their first night in town. And what a night it turns out to be'
And what an apartment too!
At first, the three girls practical Hilda, fragile Irene, and
eternally naive Jenny - - are too busy trying to hide their secret
to worry about the fleeting, flitting intruders. The landlady charges
for rooms by the person, but since the girls have to pinch their pen-
nies, they are only going to pay for two and sneak the other one in
and out of the apartment.
Scarcely have the girls paid their rent before the neighbors
start pouring in. They also find out that the neighbors across the
hall will share their kitchen, They have a tiny baby and must use
their ice box.
They have very exciting and mysterious nights and finally end
up catching some counterfeiters and becoming friends with Mrs.
Malone, the landlady.

Finally the time of the first gamf ar-
rived with the usual wrapping of sore
limbs and rubbing of tight muscles or pad-
ding a tender spot which would probably
be even more tender after tonight's game.
The usual horseplay of getting ready slows
to a halt as game time draws near and the
tension begins to settle over those who
anticipate the thrill of a solid block, a
crushing tackle, of a back reeling off a
long run, or of an end grabbing a pass
just as he falls into the end zone.

During the first few weeks of our football season
we found out we had a lot of work to do, especially
getting in shape. Many of us developed sore muscles
and found out how weak our stomachs were. As time
went by we worked into shape and started polishing up
on our fundamentals such as blocking and tackling
which would be very essential as the season went along.
With our first game only a few weeks away we
started working on new offensive patterns as well as
defense. Coach Clawson began conferring with the game

Then the tension eases as we begin our
calisthenics, and start to loosen up to pre-
vent injury to a tight muscle or a cramp when
actual play begins. At this point we also have
a passing drill to loosen up our legs even more
as well as to give our backfield men a chance
to loosen their throwing arms.
Then as we line up for the kick-off that
final bit of tension eases away and we're ready
for whatever battle our opponents may bring
to us.
As the play gets underway we take the
knocking around and give it right back in the
attempt to score a touchdown, but the opponent
also wants a touchdown so it turns out to be a
real battle. Our quarterback calls his plays
real carefully as he tries to outsmart his coun-
terpart across the line. As the half ends we note
that 'no one has scored yet and although a little
tired we must come back and fight all the harder
during the second half.
At halftime we get rid of the dry feeling in
our mouths- and every one settles down to rest
as our coach discusses the play of the first half.
After 'a recheck on sore spots or a new bruise
we go out to loosen up for the second half and
to get the touchdowns we need for victory. We
put all our training and hard work into those
final minutes of play.

ALTA 13 - HOLSTEIN 33
The Cyclones journeyed to Holstein in the season's opener
where they lost a 33-13 decision. After a slow first half the
Cyclones came rolling back to score two quick touchdowns
making the score 20-13 in favor of Holstein. The Pirates went
on to get two more tallies in the final quarter for the victory.
ALTA 7 - PAULLINA 0
Alta started its victory string at this point with a 7-0 win
over Paullina in their first conference game. Playing a fine
defensive game and featuring hard running backs that broke
away for long gains, the Cyclones looked very good at most
stages ot the game.
ALTA 0 - PRIMGHAR 2
A second quarter safety, resulting from a bad pass from
center, turned out to be the only scoring as Primghar downed
Alta by a 2-0 score, The Cyclones again played strong defense
and at times got good offensive drives going.
ALTA 7 - SANBORN 14
The Cyclones, recovering from a poor first quarter. struck
quickly with a second quarter score to shock highly-rated San-
born back to realization. The second half became the turning
point as Sanborn struck back to hold their lead in a very ex-
citing finish.

ALTA 13 -- SUTHERLAND 19
With two quick touchdowns to start off a good night, the
Cyclones held off a strong passing attack until the second half.

periods. Alta was playing good ball, but still were unable to
stop the Sutherland passing attack.
ALTA 6 - AURELIA 7
Facing a heavy but fast Bulldog team from Aurelia in the
homecoming game, the Cyclones lost a close decision by 7-6.
Alta featured several long marches. but were unable to get a
sustained drive underway to score that final touchdown.

The Cyclones opened their season on the hard-

courts with a win over Sioux Rapids. In the second
game against Newell, the team showed improve-
ment as they trounced the Panthers. They then
traveled to Rock Rapids where they encountered
the first team of few which were to scare them at
any time. Down by ten points at the half, the Cy-
clones came back strong to win in the final seconds.
In the first conference game of the year the
boys had a lapse which almost proved fatal as it
eventually held them to only a tie for the confer-
ence title. The visiting Paullina team overwhelmed
the Cyclones.
Recovering from the Paullina game and rolling
over Albert City, Sanborn, and Sutherland, Alta
faced the big game as far as the regular season was
concerned with LeMars. Featuring 6' 10" center
Bob Whelan and being one of the stronger teams
in the state, it would be an important victory to
win over LeMars. However, the boys just didnt
have the guns to stop them as they suffered their
second loss by a score of 76 to 61.
Following the loss to LeMars the Cyclones began
their longest winning streak of the year with a
well-played victory over Aurelia in the game which
is always exciting because of its rivalry. Successive
wins over Hartley, Marathon, Milford, Odebolt, Sac
City, Holstein and Ida Grove brought this latest
winning streak to 7 games and ended regular sea-
son play.
Besides a tie for first in the Sioux Valley Con-
ference with Sutherland, our Cyclones also won
In Sectional play we defeated Aurelia and
Cherokee. Winning both these games advanced us
to the district playoffs at Holstein where Mapleton
was our next foe. The scrappy Cyclones started
slow but overcame the fired up Mapleton team in
time to advance to the semifinal round at Sioux
City where we would face LeMars. Although play-
ing good ball the Cyclones were unable to handle
the height of LeMars and for a. second time this
year we lost to the Bulldogs. The Cyclones came
close to pulling ahead several times and almost
made it at the end of the game, but at least the
boys from LeMars knew they had played a hard
game in order to secure that victory.
This ended the season with a total of 21 wins
and 3 losses.
Sioux Valley all-conference selections were:
Bill Swanson and Jerry Sandine, first team: Dennis
Brechwald, second team, and Milo Kindwall and
Larry Peterson, honorable mention.
Coaching our very successful team is Roger A.
Beals. Mr. Beals' home town is Wausa, Nebraska.
He attended the University of Minnesota and the
University of Nebraska. He served two years in
the U.S Army, most of which was spent in Korea.
After leaving the service he taught school at
Wynot, Nebraska. He joined the Alta facultylin
the fall of 1956 and has since taught shop, U.S. his-
tory, physics and has been our head basketball
coach.

TRACK SEASON
The season opened with the state indoor meet
held at Iowa City on March 30. Fourteen boys
went down to participate.
On April 12 the annual Holstein Relays were
held. For a change the weather was good, although
it didn't help us place.
Then on April 18 the track squad traveled to
Pocahontas for their relays. We didn't place in
this, but everyone was improving their times.
At the Tomahawk Relays everyone turned in
their best performances but, due to stiff competi-
tion, we didn't place in the events.
Our own relays, the Alta Relays, didn't bring
any luck our way, for we still hadn't placed,
The "Good Indian" Relay at Sac City was
held April 30. The other schools proved to be too
stiff for us.
The squad placed fifth at the Estherville Re-
lays held May 2.
At the Aurelia Relays the squad turned in
their usual performances, but didn't place.
On May 7 the Sioux Valley Conference was
held at Aurelia. The team placed sixth.
The District was held at Aurelia, and the boys
that qualified for the state at this 'meet will travel
to Ames May 18 for the Iowa State Meet.

VOCAL MUSIC
The Mixed Chorus consisting of 87 members
worked hard to prepare the Vocal-Instrumental An-
nual Christmas Program on December 18. There
were six scenes depicting types of Christmas music.
These songs were sung by soloists and small ensem-
bles accompanied by a small Show-Shop Band. The
Glee Clubs also presented several numbers. The Mix-
ed Chorus closed the program by singing several
selections and closing with "Silent Night."
Next in line for the Mixed Chorus was the Tri-
City Festival at Albert City. The Albert City, Aure-
lia, and Alta mixed choruses sang together as one
unit under the direction of Professor John Sorensen
from Buena Vista College.
After this performance it was necessary to cut
the Mixed Chorus down to sixty members, because
that is all that are allowed to go to contest. Sherrill
Peterson and Deanna Brechwald accompanied both
the glee clubs and the mixed chorus. On April 5 and
6 Alta was host to the State Solo and Small Ensemble
Contest. The vocal music department had 29 entries.
They received three Division I Ratings: Treble Voice
Low Solo, Lorene Petersong Bass Voice Solo, Howard
Lietzg and Mixed Quartet A.
They received 14 Division II Ratings: Treble

On May 1 the Mixed Chorus, Girls' Glee Club.
and Boys' Glee Club presented a concert. They sang
their contest numbers and several others that they
had worked on throughout the year.
On May 4 the big group contest was held at
Sioux Center, Iowa. The Mixed Chorus, the Girls'
Glee Club, and Boys' Glee Club all received a Divi-
sion II Rating on their singing.
The last performance for the Mixed Chorus was
for Commencement on May 21, 1957. They sang "Give
Me Your Tired. Your Poor."
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
On September 3 the Alta High School Band be-
gan their busy year. They played for the flag raising
ceremony in front of the school house. The first sec-
tion of the year was devoted to Marching Band. At
the home football games they played the National
Anthem while the flag was being raised. At the half-
time they performed several shows. The marching
band was lead by Carol Radke. Kathleen Radke sub-
stituted for Carol at homecoming. Next in line was
Marching Band Contest held October 13 at Sac City.
They received a II rating. The last event for the
Marching Band was the Homecoming Parade for
the Buena Vista College at Storm Lake on October
27.
As marching band had been brought to a close,
the pep band was organized. This band played at the
pep meetings and at the halftime of the basketball
games.
Along with the pep band members, the concert
band members began preparing for the Instrumental-
Vocal annual Christmas program which was given
December 18. The next step in sight was the Tri-City
Music Festival. The Alta Band and Mixed Chorus
'met with Aurelia and Albert City at Albert City to
present a musical program on January 28. The band
was directed by William Klaster of Rolfe, Iowa.
On February 2 four of the band members receiv-
ed the honor of playing in the Northwest Iowa Con-
cert Band. Then were Bonnee Lauridsen, Kenneth
Pagel, Darryl Frantz, and Robert Hartman.
Next on the schedule for the Concert Band was
their annual winter concert on February 8.
On April 5 and 6 Alta was host to the solo and
ensemble contest. Alta had 17 instrumental entries.
Three Division I ratings were received: They were:
Clarinet Trio, Baritone Saxophone Solo, Kenneth
Pagelg and Bass Clarinet Solo, Robert Hartman.
Eight Division II ratings were received. They were:
Woodwind Trio, Miscellaneous Group of Woodwinds,
Clarinet Quartet, Saxophone Quartet, Brass Quartet,
Euphonium Solo, by Darryl Frantz, Clarinet Solo,
Susan Norton, Trombone Solo, Roland Carlson, and
Trombone Solo, Gary Walton.
On April 23 the Alta Concert Band gave their
annual Spring Concert.
At last, the year was drawing to a close. Yet.
there was one big moment for the members of the
band. Yes, it was contest at Sioux Center, April 4.
They played Egmont by Beethoven, which was a very
difficult selection. They received a Division II rat-
ing. Thus ended the activities of the Alta High School
Band for another year.
