The worth of a refrigerator ship is marked by her ability to deliver provisions to rgistamer
ships safely and quickly. To measure this ability, Commander, Service Force SlXTl-l Fleet has
developed a transfer rate guage in which the total tonnage transferred is divided by the 'irne
required to complete the replenishment of a particular ship.
Six Atlantic Fleet refrigerator ships compete for Replenishmenl-at-sea Records involving twelve
classes ofNavy customer ships. This competition to attain maximum cargo transfer rates involves
the following types of customers: Carriers, Cruisers, Destroyer Leaders, Destroyers, Attaclf
Cargo Ships, Personnel Transport Ships, Landing Platform Doclf Ships, Landing Ship Tanks,
Amphibious Command Ships, Oilers, Ammunition Ships, and Mine Sweepers. Although claims for
records are refereed by Commander Service Force, SlXTl-l Fleet stationed in the Mediterranean,
competition for these records occurs during each underway replenishment, whether it is carried
out in the Atlantic or in the Mediterranean.
As this boolf goes to press on 6 May l965, ALSTEDE holds ten of the twelve official records.
Nine of these were set during the Mediterranean deployments in August and November 19611 and
March l965. ALSTEDE has also laid claim to two new records, one with a Fleet Tug and one
with the SlXTl'l Fleet Stores Ship. Official recognition of these records by Commander Service
Force, SlXTl-l Fleet has been requested.
The figures listed below and the bar graphs on the succeeding pages show the progressive
imorovementof ALSTEDE's competive position during the year reported in this Cruise Book.
