Shop Mel Atwood taught classes in shop lab and power mechanicsfwelding. Some of the more notable projects were a utility trailer that Kurt Stone built, a cider press made by Eric Phelps, and a go-cart made from a lawn mower by Brian Phelps and Anthony Chance. Students were able to do glass etching for the first time, and many students did stained glass projects. Classes took field trips in the spring to see a metallurgical jewelry making shop at the coast and supply sources in the Corvallis area. Above: Robert Tapp takes the head oft lawn mower engine. Science! Forestry Special projects of the physics class, taught by Peter Shoshin, included the construction of a wave burner, researching the possibility of generating power for the school from the Alsea River, and plotting the stellar constellations on the ceiling of the science room. Jerry Phelps taught biology and a class that included one semester of forestry and one of outdoor education. Students in the outdoor ed. class made fishing rods, learned and practiced taxidermy, and mounted and varnished sets of antlers. Honors An interdisciplinary honors class was offered for the first time, team - taught by Jim Mullenix, Ron Nicholson, Peter Shoshin, and Bonnie Hill. The purpose of the class was to involve students in subject matter not covered in the regular curriculum. Among subjects explored were cultures and values, technology, economics, population studies and current U.S. foreign relations. Reading, discussions, and oral presentations of individually researched topics were emphasized, in addition to two research papers. Students also saw an opera tLa Bohemej, a ballet tThe Nutcrackerj, a performance by Chinese dancers, a rock musical tTommyj, and a lecture at OSU by Linus Paulingg in the spring they participated in an OSU workshop on whales at the Marine Science Center.

.kt FQ Home Ec. Home ec. students started the year on food unitsg they prepared full course dinners, including a vegetarian meal, and learned various food preservation methods. They learned sewing skills in making a complete garment. Mike Wood and Teresa Whitehall each taught a class: Wood's class worked with kindergarten children for five weeks as part of a unit on child development. The kindergarteners often learn more easily from other students because they're more at ease with them than they might be with a teacher , said Wood about the success of the unit.
