Math Computer science was a new addition to math offerings. Taught by Ron Nicholson, the course coveredcomputer literacy, hardware , and programming. Nicholson also taught applied math to juniors and seniors, advanced math, algebra, and geometry. Students found an emphasis in applying math theory to real-life situations. In the spring, they each completed a special independent project for the Projects Fair. Jim Hagler taught general math to a group of freshmen. Right: Eric Phelps constructs dome-shaped play structure which he designed and built a model for as a math project. ' it W' Above: Kurt Stone defends goal. Right: Ginger Weist follows through on swing. Phy9calEducaUon The two p.e. classes played field hockey, flag football and soccer in the fall. When the rain hit, they moved inside to play volleyball, badminton and floor hockey: conditioning and weight training were also stressed, and new scooter boards provided fun and exercise. ln the spring, softball was the main emphasis. Vince Drago and Teresa Whitehall instructed the classes. Heahh Juniors took the required health class, and felt unanimously that the alcoholism unit was the most interesting and beneficial. Janet Dair, who counsels alcoholics, spoke to the class and organized activities regarding that issue. Alsea EMT's Karlene Colgan and Viola Bedell taught a one week unit in which students obtained first aid cards. Vince Drago taught the health class. Right: Joe Hendrix reads chapter on tobacco. Science! Forestry Special projects of the physics class, taught by Peter Shoshin, included the construction of a wave burner, researching the possibility of generating power for the school from the Alsea River, and plotting the stellar constellations on the ceiling of the science room. Jerry Phelps taught biology and a class that included one semester of forestry and one of outdoor education. Students in the outdoor ed. class made fishing rods, learned and practiced taxidermy, and mounted and varnished sets of antlers. Lett: Teresa Short and Jim Lang calculate the head for hydro- electric power tor the school. Above: Marianne Lang researches topic for honors paper and oral presentation. Honors An interdisciplinary honors class was offered for the first time, team - taught by Jim Mullenix, Ron Nicholson, Peter Shoshin, and Bonnie Hill. The purpose of the class was to involve students in subject matter not covered in the regular curriculum. Among subjects explored were cultures and values, technology, economics, population studies and current U.S. foreign relations. Reading, discussions, and oral presentations of individually researched topics were emphasized, in addition to two research papers. Students also saw an opera tLa Bohemej, a ballet tThe Nutcrackerj, a performance by Chinese dancers, a rock musical tTommyj, and a lecture at OSU by Linus Paulingg in the spring they participated in an OSU workshop on whales at the Marine Science Center.
