Journalism Journalism students ended the year by winning eight awards in a statewide contest sponsored by the Oregon Journalism Education Association. The 1982 yearbook tied for second place in the category of General Excellence with a school with an enrollment of over 2,000 students. Tin Hat Times editor Maxine Dallmann and associate editor Adrienne Hill took first places in the categories of News, Features, Photography! Layout, and Sports, and the staff won a special award for a story on Junette Zandofsky. The paper took second place in the General Excellence category. In October, the staff attended the Oregon Scholastic Press Conference at the University of Oregon, where yearbook editor Heather Backes placed third in a layout contest. Advisor Bonnie Hill said she thought the awards showed that students from small schools can be very strong academically. by ml- Lower left: Jamie Bryant sees how her latest negatives turned out Above: Maxine Dallmann and Adrienne Hill work on the latest issue of the Tin Hat Times. Ss gy -rl ' :- Spanish The Spanish class, taught by Mike Wood, consisted of first-year students who practiced basic conversational skills, learned grammar and vocabulary, and studied the culture of Spanish-speaking countries. Cammie Dair, the only second-year student, worked with more advanced materials and helped beginning students. The honors class used the library throughout the year for research. Jones also organized three afternoons in the spring when foreign students from OSU shared aspects of their cultures with Alsea students. Junette Zandofsky began the year as library aide. After her death in January, Cyndi Chambers was hired as aide. She made instructional materials, helped students, and catalogued new books. David Phelps worked as a student aide. ,r ' fl 'a Photography The photography class was unique in that all five students unabashedly tried to use the darkroom at the same time, according to student Aaron Carpenter. Instructor Jim Mullenix did construct a schedule, but those who adhered to it were left eating dust! said Carpenter. Projects included solarizing, a series of specific assignments, a photo display for the Projects Fair, and posters. The class used a new set of tour 250-watt flood-lights, which relieved the lighting problem in the hallways and on stage. Left: Aaron Carpenter takes photo for assignment. I Chorus The most memorable aspect of chorus was probably new teacher Don Hood's willingness to work with people who were not actually members of his class. Sizeable groups of students and teachers joined chorus students to sing-in both the Christmas and Spring Programs.
