Football According to head football coach Jim Hagler, the Wolverines had many strengths. We had a lot of depth, the second team was just as good as the first team, he said. It was balanced in its fundamental skills, and these boys never quit - when things were down, they never lost their composure. The record of four wins and five losses didn't indicate the potential we had, because early games were critical, and with our inexperience, we just weren't ready. Hagler concentrated on offense, while assistant coach Mike Wood focused on building a strong defense. Six players received Honorable Mention from the Casco League: Kurt Stone, Steve Jackson, Todd Strom, Mike Sapp, Guy Goodenough, and Bob France. Jackson was recognized as the team's Most Valuable Player, Kurt Stone as the Most lnsiprational, and Chris Bauer as the Most lmproved. Right: Jesse Sapp breaks a tackle. M We Q . -Q.,-K Cheerleaders Because of the new policy that students could participate in only one sport, and because cheerleading was considered a sport, there were no cheerleaders for football. Wendy Riley and Shelly Hendrix began cheering for the basketball season with Heather Backes, Jamie Bryant, and Rosie Fomai, but by the end of the season only the last three remained on the squad. Most students seemed to appreciate the quality and creativity of the pep assemblies. Aarik Ali, Eddie Hildebrand, and Brian Phelps often helped with skits in the assemblies. One of the most popular assemblies featured a tape prepared by the cheerleaders that simulated interviews with Alsea and Eddyville players with phrases from popular songs. One of the fans' favorite cheers was Give us an A , which the cheerleaders spelled out on the floor with their bodies. Left: Cheerleaders stack up for Look out cheer. Lower left: Cheerleaders conclude Give me an A cheer. Below: Cheer- leaders visit with squad from opposing school at halftime.
