M We Q . -Q.,-K Cheerleaders Because of the new policy that students could participate in only one sport, and because cheerleading was considered a sport, there were no cheerleaders for football. Wendy Riley and Shelly Hendrix began cheering for the basketball season with Heather Backes, Jamie Bryant, and Rosie Fomai, but by the end of the season only the last three remained on the squad. Most students seemed to appreciate the quality and creativity of the pep assemblies. Aarik Ali, Eddie Hildebrand, and Brian Phelps often helped with skits in the assemblies. One of the most popular assemblies featured a tape prepared by the cheerleaders that simulated interviews with Alsea and Eddyville players with phrases from popular songs. One of the fans' favorite cheers was Give us an A , which the cheerleaders spelled out on the floor with their bodies. Left: Cheerleaders stack up for Look out cheer.
