Here are the people you're most interested in when
school opens-your teachers. You get your schedules
and away you go to meet them to find out what these
people are like who will be guiding you through an-
other school year. You learn that they're from all
sections of the country and represent colleges and
universities in many statesg some have traveled
abroad. You feel this is good, for you will get awide
range of view points .

ICE EMPRESS AND COURT: Eunice Sommer-
field, Marguerite Sequin, Tamyra Hartz, Judy
Riegal and Joan Skowronek.
Each season brings with it some-
thing very special and wonderful
in Alpena. Especially is this so
when winter is at its peak, for
that is the time Alpena holds her
Annual Winter Ice Carnival with
speed races, bobcat hunting, ice
fishing, hockey, dancing, a big
ice show in which many students
participate.
And what would be a carnival
without a queen to reign over such
a grand occasion? There is
great excitement in the air just
before Carnival weekend,
especially among the fairer sex as
they wait to find out who will be
selected Ice Empress to preside
over the festivities.
This year our own Tamyra Hartz,
senior, got to wear the crown to
make the sixth consecutive year
for an Alpena High girl to capture
the title. Adding glamour to her
court were four lovely misses--
Eunice Sommerfeld, AHS,
Marguerite Sequin, CCHS, Judy
Riegel, AHS, and Joan Skowronek,
CCHS.

Seniors
You, the seniors, have finally reached your goal. During these years since you
first entered Alpena High School, you have done many wonderful things together,
as a class and in different clubs and organizations ......
Your year was highlighted by such things as the senior play .... all the glitter
and glamour of the Junior-Senior Prom at Christmas and the Senior Prom in the
spring. . .the excitement of donning cap and gown for the first time .... the
eagerness to try new things ahead, reluctance to part with old, familiar school
surroundings and friends ....
Your life here has been rich, exciting, rewarding. You witnessed the beginning
of the Sputnik age, heard rumblings of plans for dramatic changes in the philoso-
phy of education ....
Whatever the future holds for you, be proud and thankful that you are prepared
to meet. it. And carry forward with you the memories of these, the happy years
in your life.

aHS's year-round athletic program starts
n the fall and right in the thick of all
warsity sports you 'll see cheerleaders
md a drum major and drum majorette
xrging the teams on to victory.
Fhe high-stepping drum major and
najorette are active during football
season, leading the band in intricate
n
aneuvers during halftime.
Full of vim and vigor are the
cheerleaders who 'll brave
any kind of weather to let
the teams know that they 're
behind them 100 per cent.
You 'd have to look a long
time to find a better gang
than Alpena High's pep squad

ln rain, snow, mud and slush, the Wildcats rolled through a foot-
ball season in which the good and bad were pretty well mixed.
The Cats opened against Canadian Soo, and, following tradition,
came home from foreign soil with a win, 10-0.
With half the line crippled, Coach Bill Beach's boys faced Mus-
kegon Heights a.nd their all-state halfback, Ossie McCarty.
Heights won 19-7 . The Cats returned home to meet Saginaw Ar-
thur Hill and start a three-game home stand. Arthur Hill's hot
first half was enough to carry the game for them, 34-13.
Bay City Handy came next, with AHS's Wildcats clobbering them
19-0 to roll into high gear for homecoming celebrations in whic
h
Midland, state champions, flattened the Wildcats 27-6, again be-
cause of powerful first-half play.
After that, the Wildcats played sensational ball. For the first time
since Coach Beach arrived at AHS, the Wildcats beat Flint Cen-
tral, 26-12 at Flint. The Cats then closed out the home season,
running circles around Owosso. AHS scored 46 points in the
heavy fog that covered Sports Park while Owosso failed to score.
The final game of the year was a heartbreaking loss at Traverse
City in freezing slush and driving sleet.
At the end of the year AHS placed three players on the All-
Conference team and ten on the Arrowhead honorable mention list.

The Wildcat cagers won more games than they lost
this year Q9-75. The record also includes a 1-1 mark
in tournament play.
Alpena won its first two games , both home, from
Owosso 46-40, and Petoskey 73-53. But then they
got beat 56-51 by conference rival, Bay City, and
again 65-55 by Arrowhead Member Midland.
While still on Christmas vacation, the Cats found they
still hadn't discovered a way to get by American Soo,
who beat them 59-43. AHS split two games there,
beating Canadian Soo 69-48, but losing to the Blue
Devils again.
Next the Wildcats got two quick victories from Owosso
68-58, and Traverse City, 60-43, but then got upset
by weak Canadian Soo, 49-44.
Basketball
Bob Kurtz, jerry Wade, Ben Froggett, Bill Gapczynski.
Ron Fielden, Harry Gierszewski, Gerald Newhouse.
Next they split with Handy and Traverse City to set
their Arrowhead Conference mark at 2-3 and then
lost to River Rouge, after a grueling road trip.
Alpena finished in a blaze of glory, however,by beat-
ing Cheboygan, Petoskey, and the unbeaten Midland
Chemics in the season finale.
In tournament play the Wildcats won a district crown
and trophy by whipping Lapeer. They got edged out
by Flint Central 60-53 in the regionals.
At the season's end the Cats put one man, Bill
Gapczynski, on the Arrowhead Conference Team, with
two receiving honorable mention.

So say staff members of the school news-

every two weeks. This has been a big
year for them for it marked their first
year in off-set printing, opening the way
for more pictures and art work and better

What is life without a song?
You probably won 't find out during your high school years,
for there's plenty of singing around Alpena High.
These two vocal groups--the Mixed Chorus and the
A Cappella Choir--sing for you and for the general
public on many occasions during the year. Whether
you 're singing with them or listening to them, the
beauty of the blending voices adds richness to your
life here.
