Within its covers may be found a rep- resentation of your life at Alma High School during the past year. We have tried to make this book a collection of what we considered the most important happenings and have also tried to include familiar faces and events that will bring back pleasant memories. It is, therefore, with pride that we present the 1957 PANTHER TALES to: THE FRESHMEN, who have taken their first step forward into the field of higher educationg THE SOPHOMORES, who have reached the half--way mark of higher education and will soon enter more complete- ly into High School life and activityg THE JUNIORS, who are gradually realizing their hopes and ambitions as well as their handicapsg THE SENIORS, who have advanced to the point of no return, realizing their investments, future plans and knowledge gainedg and last, yet first, THE GRADUATING SENIORS, who have both given and received much from Alma in their years hereg and to all who hold with them a small por-- tion of the tradition and spirit found within the walls of our school. In future years we hope that all will treasure this book and look back with fond memories to the years spent at Alma High School and that everyone will constantly use it as a guide to the past to recall the friendly faces and pleasant scenes encountered in 1956-1957. Shults Miss Grace Rowell ' Miss Rowell has always been there when ever a ldnd word of sympathy or a cheerful word of encouragement or just the old familiar sweet smile was needed. No matter where we go or what we do, we will never forget the sweet, loving, white- haired lady who greeted us with a smile and a kind word all through our high school career. As we sail away into the future, we may forget some of the chapters of this high school career, but whether the sea be smooth or billowy, there is one chapter we will always remember - the extra, added chapter which every school has not been as fortunate in having as we, Office Secretaries Miss Rowell Mrs. Fox 7 Maynard Christensen: B.S., M.A., Michigan State College. S ' fr. f 'nw ,-. -. ,H ',:. ' -.. - 1' THE HISTORY OF Tl-EE SENIOR CLASS OF 1957 ,. -x na. ' ' There was a rumbling from every seam of the various grade schools, on that memorable day in 1944, as the various counterparts of our class stepped from their mother's skirts to invade the schools, which would never recover. - They progressed through those seven years of grade school, each one developing his own mean little traits that he wol eventually carry to those innocent halls of Stillwell and our unforgettable friend, Lee Nelson. On September 7, 1951, the seventh grade teachers timidly peeked out of their windows to view the arrival of the com bined forces of Wright, Lincoln, Hillcrest, St. Mary's and the Stompers of Republic. The teachers struggled through the next two years but then, at the start of the 9th grade, another disaster befell them, The Diggers Brush of the Elwell Limited and The Riverdale Express, entered the golden portals of Stillwell. We cruised through the 9th grade and what proved to be Mr. Erickson's last Algebra class. In honor of his many years of service, we gave him a huge box and a little Scotch cooler. That evening, Mr. Erickson relived his life as our class did "This is Your Life, Mr. Melvin Erickson." Then, "Michigan Wonderland," and our ninth grade banquet, came off a great success as the struggling females of thu class of '58 prepared and served our wonderful dinner. To top it off in our freshmen year, the Annual Field Day was held. In the pre-classic prediction it was thought the ba was going to be between the "pencils up boys," of Erickson's Algebra Class, against the past participle kids of Mrs. Budgc English. However, as Field Day wore on, it became evident that one team had been overlooked. For as Erickson's and Budge's teams met in deadly combat, out of the mist came "MRS. WARE'S LATIN CLASS??????" This power packed team, which was composed of Thell Woods, Larry Nelson, and 22 girls, went on to win the homeroom title. Then, it happened! September 7, 1954, as the teachers would put it, "THEY COME!" and as the upper classmen put it as they prepared the initiation, "THEY'RE HERE! " and as an innocent bystander would put it that Friday morning, "WHAT ARE THEY?????" "People just don't wear onions and bones around their necks." That night, after scraping off the 31 layers of lipstick, we attended the Kouncil Kickoff and were officially accepted as Sophomores. Homecoming 1954, was the one which saw us get cheated. For us, that year, it was awful as we lost our football gam to Ludington 41-13. The one bright spot was our first Homecoming Ball, "Stairway To The Stars." The Barn Dance and Mardi Gras flew past us almost before we knew it and we were actually beginning to ask the glrll ---out. April 23, 1955, we walked through the door of the new gym into "The Enchanted Woodland," and to our first real prol To top off our Sophomore year, we had a picnic at School-S ection Lake. The writers of this History deemed it neces- sary to skip this phase of our history, to protect the innocent. When we enthused Juniors returned to school for another 9 months, we immediately started to work, not on school wor of course, but in preparation for our 1955 Homecoming. Our float which pictured a typical Alma blast, Alma blasting or of the clouds far ahead of the other conference schools, won first place for the most original entry. That night following the parade, we all gathered at the massive Bahlki Stadium for the traditional clash between Alm and Mt. Pleasant, only this time, not only the oil can was at stake, but the success of the whole Homecoming. What hap pened there that memorable night is all part of our history. For the first time in 8 years, "We won! ! 'FWE WON THE OI1 CAN4' with a score of 14-0" and to finish Homecoming with a big bang, the ball was also a great success. We breezed through the winter months until Mardi Gras time in February. How can we forget Thell Woods and Kae Mitchell in their built-in TV aerials? This was the year that our penny pitch won us a 7 cent profit. Then came our first full fledged, Junior-Senior Prom, the one where we did the work and the Seniors stood around giw orders. How many of you can remember the ice cream cones and gingerbread men? This was also the time of the great epidemic that struck Alma High and many of us couldn't go to the prom because of the ----- Measles. Four days later, we attended our first Junior-Senior Banquet. Peggy Powers, Connie Shzoyer, Marilyn Soucek and Katie Thompson Qwho left us in her junior year for Indianaj sang Graduation Day and we all laughed at the Seniors as the girls went hysterical and the boys dabbed at their eyes with their hankies. Then came our first Junior-Senior Picnic at Budd Lake. Even though Kirschbaum tried to sink all the canoes, the picn was a complete success. As we came back for our last year, it was a joyous time returning, for this was the year that we were to take over Alm High. Yes, we were now Seniors and ready to take on anything and to lead us we chose Larry I-lamp as our presiden I V ua Meyers as vice president, Kay McAnallen as our secretary, and Ron Thompson as our treasurer. 5-N ' '-" Our first obstacle was Homecoming. What can we say about it, other than we beat Manistee, the num " gfearn-in the state 14-6 in the football game. Our lives were full of firsts, we had beaten Manistee, Ludington and dfllacg the first time in 9 years that we had beaten Mt. Pleasant on THEIR field, THEIR Homecoming and brought back the little red oil can for a stay, it was the first time Alma had won the North Central Michigan B Conference Champlonrh '1: 'Wha1 can we say to our team except a heart load of thanks? We had one of the most beautiful Homecoming Queenfff- -, ly McAnallen. Also to add honor to our class, om' float won first place in the parade. It seems only-yesterday ,g if Klrschbaum and Pvt. Tickle drove those gallant steeds to victory. I can still hear Ticlde yelling "Whoa--SA Vglxose plow horses tried to run over the Senior Cross-Country Team. Once again in our history we deem it necessary to omit a phase. Basketball season. We are sorry our lane where we had wished, but we did manage to knock down a couple of teams who otherwise might have gonethl bvu' y ',1Qqay. ' Now, it is Mardi Gras time and under our leadership, we had one of the biggest and very best. Speakingfzsfibff there wasn't anything wrong with our Queen and King- Connie Shoryer and Don Humphry. 4-fill' l-53,5251 I . Along came March and another first for our class. Sadie Hawkins week. Although Seniors dreamed up thifldeagithe v Juniors did a grand job on the actual work. 1 -wr., h April came and went and following it was May and with May, the Seniors began to hop. Pictures had to be taken, dates get, money for the date, announcements to be sent gowns to be ordered, a hundred and one things to be done, Almost :rything managed to get done, that is everything except school work. Then in usual fashion, rain: came May 18 and r last Junior and Senior Prom. We need not run off what happened that night. Angels, clouds, and harps all made "My ie Heaven" complete. Tluee words tell it all "It was GREAT! !" Then came tonight, May 22, 1957, our last junior and Senior Banquet. How it turns out, I can't say yet, for when I ate this about 1 U2 hour ago, I didn't know how it was going to turn out. One June 2, 1957, we will turn a little more serious as we look in the mirror for the first time in our cap and gown, '11 scratch our heads and say, "Where did all those years go?" Baccalaureate is what I speak of. If it accomplishes :hing else, we'll spend an hour where a lot of us could spend a lot more--in Church, On june 5, we'll lighten from exams and go to Budd Lake for our junior and Senior Picnic. If it turns out the way the iiors have handled everything else it will be a great success. june 6, 1957 - 8:00 p.m. - Alma F. R. Phillips Gymnasium. We hope you are there, for that is the night we complete ' 13 years of school. May we, the class of nineteen hundred and fifty seven, wish you, the class of nineteen hundred and y eight the very best of luck and may your history be filled with as much joy and happiness as has ours.
