I will now attempt to relate the history and happenings of the mi st
brilliant and studious class ever to pass out the doors of old Alma High,
the Senior class of l95l. Each day of our twehn years in Alma was crowd-
ed wlth important events and unusual happenings. Jolene Blum, Carolyn
Dodge, Baarara Baker, and Clara Dyer started out in the first grade under
Miss Suitor. Pat Dugan also entered the first grade in Alma, but moved
to Michigan and joined us again in the eighth grade.
Twenty-slx freshmen made their first appearance in Alma Higlm o n
September 21, l957.
At our first class meeting we elected the following officers:
President ................. Lynne Randall
Vice Pres1dent.... ....Marvel Haeker
Secy Treas ......... ........ Jolene Blum
Sponsor ......... ......... ..... Mr. Weber
During the first semester Patsy Hart moved away.
To our amazement we soon became known as the 'Bully sophiesl no'
new could that possibly bel!l??? '
The gym was beautifully decorated for a Christmas Party on December
23. Our first party

elected president to keep us on the right track but
the year and Marvel Haeker took over this marvelous
Other officers were:
Secretary.... ...Dorothy Anderson
Treasurer.... ......Jolene Blum

Sponsors.... ... Miss Milburn
To show our dramatic ability, we presented the play, 'You Can't Take
It With You' on December 9, under the direction of Mr. Jack Becker.
Impressive class rings proved the fact that we were sophisticated.
But the best was yet to come!! Not only were we 'greenn, 'bu111esn,
nsoph1st1cated', but we became very dignified upper classmen.
Officers elected this year were?
Pres1dent......... ....C1arence Haeker
Vice Pres1dent.... ........Pat Dugan
Treasurer........ .......Clara Dyer
Secretary...................Ksye Grimsley
And so another successful cycle is brought to a close
at Alma High.

Kaye Grimsley and I have worked ten hard years in Miami, Florida
trying to save enough money to take a trip back to Alma to see our class-
mates of '51, We don't have enough money to buy a new car so we must take
my trusty 38 Chevyn, that I've had since I was a Senior.
We had driven five days and pulled into Lincoln to see the Unfn sity.
As the guide was showing us around, we almost got knocked over as we came
by the Chemistry door. The guide said he would investigate to se, 'hy
the kids ran out. Naturally, we followed him, and to our amazement there
stood Carolyn Dodge. Carolyn told us that Mr. Hawley had taught her so
much that she decided to teach Chemistry at the University and Mr. Hawkeye
son was her most promising pupil. While talking to Carolyn the janitor,
who was Maurice Cole came in. Maurice is working his way through college
and enjoys Carolyn's Chemistry class very much. Saying good-bye, we hit
the road once more.
While going through Naponee to see the dam, our car started to steam
from the rough roads, so we headed for the nearest farm house. As we
pulled into the yard, six blonde, curly-headed youngsters came running
toward the car. When we told them our troubles, they called for their
mother to come help us. And who do you think it was! Charlotte Lennemgnn
our old classmate who changed her name to Post early in June, 1951. Again
we took off.
As we neared the dam and marveled at the changes, we hired a guide
to show us around. A man carrying a bucket of fresh cement bumped into us
as we were looking at the spill way. We yelled 'Patn as we recognized our
old classmate who was rebuilding the dam because of the slight flaw he
noticed. As we sat eating dinner in the dining hall, we saw many strange
faces, but we recognized our old classmate, Alice Vasey. Alice is Pat's
private secretary and takes dictation at 200 words a minute. We again
started on our way, leaving our two old classmates, and headed for our old
home town--that was so dear to us--Alma. Upon deciding to visit the old
schoolhouse, we found they were having a track meet. Alma was having it
out with Oxford which was the best in Harlan County, so we were told. The
Oxford coach was patting one of his boys on the back for completing the
mile in four minutes flat. We took a closer look at the coach and found
him to be one of our classmates, Eddie Fruit. As we were tdudxg to Eddie,
a fellow came up, saying the boys were all in the pickup and ready to gog
the driver just happened to be Bernard Hodge, the dare-devil driver in our
Senior year.
Walking down town we noticed the changes but found such a crowd
around our favorite drug store we dould hardly get through. We asked a by-
stander what all the commotion was about and he told us that Jolene Blum
and Dorothv Anderson, after ten long years had finally saved enough from
their salaries to buy the drug store from ban McCleery. A sign was being
painted on the windows reading: Jolene Blum's Pharmacy and Dorothy Ander-
son's Delicious Chocolate. Continuing to explore the town our attention
was called to a little shack next to Haeker's Fur Store. nTough1eu Pond
has started his own fur and tanning shop. nToughien says he catches the
real McCoy.
Missing one of our classmates, Clara Dyer, we decided to run down to
Dyers' mansion to see if we could locate her. Her parents told us she was
a student in a college located in Paris. She was getting ideas from the
Paris models for her dress shop which she planned to buy after receiving
the highest degree possible.

Jolene had received a letter from Carol saying that she was traveling
with a construction company and would be going through Holdrege about five
that evening.
Wanting to see our classmate and her husband, we decided to go to
Holdrege. When we were drinking coffee in the Hotel Dale, a nurse came in,
and since the booths were filled she had to sit with us. We immediately
recognized her as Betty Nicodemus. She said she was now head nurse at the
Brewster Hospital. Betty was called for an emergency so we said goodbye.
Finally Carol arrived. She hadn't changed much in the last ten years, just
a few gray hairs here and there. She said that following the construction
work was a hard life but she loved it.
Our time was up so we bade farewell to our classmates and started on
our journey home.
To break the monotony we turned on the radio and got theconcert hour.
My! Weren't we surprised as they announced their guest artist to be Marvel
Haeker. After Marvel had played a few of her own compostions, she made a
speech. Mert said she was kept very busy following the marines and keep-
ing track of her husband nJugn. After the Concert Hour, nlt Pays to Be
Ignorant.n they announced their new master of ceremonies, Gerald Hansen.
Miss Mackie had given Jerry the idea of applying for the job.
Since the gas tank said empty, we stopped at the Anita and Delw1n's
Filling Station. The new proprietor, Delwin Schimmels, decided he liked
the climate better in Missouri than in Nebraska.
As we drove out of Missouri, a jeep chasing a herd of Black Angus
cattle blocked the road. Before we could say anything to them we recog-
nized the cow girls as Lela Norton and Marilyn Pond. They explained to us
that the fence had broken and Lela hadn't gotten around to fix it. The
cattle were running down the road, so they jumped in their jeep and left.
Along the road in Texas, we saw many signs reading nHaeker and Hardin
Oil Wells.u The names sounded familiar, so we drove to the main office.
Clarence Haeker and Dee Hardin were discussing how tired they were of
working for their first million but they decided to start on their second.
Thinking we were little out of class, we left.
Along the gulf of Florida, we stopped to eat our lunch. A passer-by
happened to kick sand in our food. We looked up and saw LaDonna Fritz.
She said she and her husband, Dick Turner, were on their vacation.
My trusty old Chevy made this trip, but before we can make another
we'll have another means of transportation.

At the beginning of the year, 26 Juniors were enrolled in Alms High.
The first day of school at 7 a.m., some of the Juniors were seeking seats
of their choice. On arriving at the scene, they found that some of the
students had gone to the building Saturday and saved some of the best
seats. Boy! it was tough sitting there for two hours and not getting the
seat you'WHhted, wasn't it?
At the first class meeting the following officers were elected:
Pres1dent.............. .... ..........Tommy Dellinger
Vice President... ....Gordon Richards
Secretary....... .....Conn1e Stone
Treasurer.................................Don Jardon
I'd like to mention that Tom y Dellinger has been our president for
the past two years, and a mighty good one, too. Our class sponsors were
lies Anderson and Miss lilburn.
The Juniors have s very good average of students in different activi-
ties. Eight boys were enrolled in football, eleven boys and girls in band
and ten girls ln pep club.
In December the Junior Class play was presented in order to raise
funds for the Junior-Senior Banquet. The Juniors had been working hard to
raise money for this event and wanted to make it the best Alma High ever
had.
Due to financial difficulties, and the fact that they had been so
busy with the play, they d1dn't have any parties the first nine weeks, but
held a Sadie Hawkins Party later on.
One thing the Juniors looked forward to was the Boys and Girls County
Government Day. I know all of the members were overly anxious to make
those speeches in front of the assembly.
All ln all, I think the Juniors have enjoyed this year, although they
had to work harder than they did last year, but I think they have en o ed
lt even more. 4

Whenever anything goes wrong,
You hear the same old chanting song,
The Sophomores did it lyou might knowl.
For no one else would stoop so lowg
The cooking class is a terrible messg
Now I gender why-- Sophomores, you guess.
They all cry out 'Now why the fuss?
What makes you alqa 3 think it's us?
Now do you suppose Zhat it could be
There're usually blamed--cause there're
usually guil-ty???
S O P H I E S' A N S W E R
What makes you think 1t's always us
We hardly ever cause a fuss.
Really, the Freshmen caused the row
because the Seniors showed them how.
The Sophomores always get the blame,
When it's really the Juniors they ought to name.
When something's wrong 1t's the Sophomores
you guess Q, D OG
Well, don't blame us for all your messg Q, - Jr
But we don't get sore, we don't get mad gn
Cause we're good natured and are we glad.
