seniors participate in mock government
an example of the activities in
which seniors participated is stu-
dent day in government. repre-
senting such activities, s.d.i.g. ex-
emplifies the talent, interests,
cleverness, and hopes of the senior
class.
by acting out the parts of can-
didates and elected or appointed
officials, students learned the
functions of government on the
local level by actually filling the
positions of their counterparts in
city hall. this first hand education
was for the purpose of preparing
youths for positions as skilled, in-
telligent leaders of our local
political administration.
under the direction of mr. egan
and mr. tonges, registered voters
also learned the mechanics of
primary and general elections.

aviators
the 1969-1970 aviators had
what dedicated fans might call
a very sporadic team as the
3-5-1 record shows. however,
it does not exemplify the hard
work and sacrifice of our
players. they lost four close
contests by an average of 7
points. the aviators rose to the
occasion and defeated east
liverpool 14-6 to give coach
knowlton his 150th victory.

a football coach cannot be measured by his
record-how -many wins and losses. a good coach
strives to develop character in young men. though he
may lose a game, he is never really defeated, he wants
more than only a victory. a good football coach is
hard to find, and a lot harder to keep. mel knowlton
is such a man. after 24 years of coaching at alliance
high school, mel knowlton leaves us a lot more than
150 victories. indeed his years of valuable service and
effort will always be remembered in alliance.

following the theme of "wanted", the
1969 n.h.s. fall induction differed from
the traditional program. as the symbolic
candles were lit, a reading of "candles on
the glacier" with a piano accompaniment
of "i believe" replaced the customary
singing of "one little candle". chosen be-
cause of their character, service, scholar-
ship, and leadership, sixteen seniors were
hand picked by the vote of the faculty
and administration. the old members
enacted a police station situation in-
cluding explanations of the four qualities
required for n.h.s. membership. following
the tapping of new members, a reception
was held for parents and inductees.
as the curtains closed, words of congratulations were
spoken to the new members.
