OPERETTA '01 Heartless House, an all girl operetta, written by Claude A. Stiehl with music by Winifred Moore, was presented by the girls' chorus. The singing cast was as follows: Strayfair, treasurer of the society, Ann Madden, Cantwright, an authoress, June Spray, Alethea, a twin, Wanda Jackman, Athea, the other twin, Edith Thompson, Miss Abigail Faltsome, the twins' aunt, Earline Salts- gaver. Other characters were: Miss Hulda, sister of Miss Abigail, Alicia Beasley, Du Busy, a member of the society, Beth Wolfe, Sharpridge, another society member, Wilma Hussey, and serving woman, Margaret Osman. The chorus of club women were: Patricia Alka, Lovilah Blood, Betty Buchanan, Patsy Buchanan, Thelma Carey, Lois Clark, June Couch, Darlene Davis, Carol Jean Dicus, Lois Keneipp, Patricia Litherland, Marjorie Price, Mary Ann Prout, Helen Reed, Ruth Reed, France Smith, Evelyn Thompson, and Carolyn Trimble. Accompanist was Joan Price, director was Miss Simpson. Under the name of the New Era Society, a group of women have banded together to prove to themselves and to the world that woman's dependence on man is a thing of the past. In order to facilitate their plan, they have selected a country residence where, sharing their earnings and expenses in common, they have individually pur- sued their special inclinations in the various arts, particularly in literature and painting and sculpture. But their initial activity and ardor have somewhat waned, and the opening of the opera finds them in a straitened financial condition when a magazine, ridiculing their endeavors, and characterizing them as a group of disgruntled old maids, brands their residence with the name Heartles House. They see in this article sufficient slander to warrant taking action in the form of a suit for libel. At the same time, two extremely wealthy old maids, taking the magazine articles for its face value, and conceiving the society as the ideal place for their twin neices, visit Heartless House and agree upon a generous endowment, provided that at the end of a year their nieces have achieved what the women promise: Two modern girls of cultured taste, Unspoiled, reserved, demure and chaste l However, a year at Heartless House produces a pair of vastly different girls, and when the two maiden aunts arrive quite unexpectedly they are horrified to discover their mistake, but it is too late to remedy the situation. They immediately cancel all plans for an endowment, and one disaster follows another in quick succession when the ong-pending libel suit results in a ridiculously small award. With all chances for continuing the Society rapidly diminishing, some half- forgotten love notes, and carefully hidden photographs, with reminiscences of love affairs and withheld promises, achieve a greater importance on each woman's horizon, as they declare unanimously: Our latest plan is wed the man Who loves and who obeys!
